This charming lakefront cottage is located on three hundred feet of private beach. The gradual sandy beach is excellent for swimming and the sunsets from the south shore of Lake Michigan are incredible.
Porter Beach is a small beach community located on the borders of the Indiana Dunes State Park and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and just one hour from downtown Chicago. The beautiful beach stretches in either direction for miles and within minutes you can get to wonderful nature trails, excellent restaurants, quaint shops and many interesting cultural attractions.
The trails vary in length and difficulty but are all wonderful for both hiking and cross country skiing. There are also some excellent sledding hills nearby. Other close by sights include historic Chelberg Farm, Westchester Township History Museum, Zao Island Amusement Park, Taltree Arboretum, Calumet Bike Trail, Imagination Glen with a BMX race track and a 10 mile Outback Mountain Bike Trail and Broken Wagon Bison Farm and many more wonderful places to explore and activities to delight.

This cozy cottage is right on the beach and the views are wonderful. We slept to the sounds of the waves and enjoyed every minute of our stay. And the owners are close by and so helpful. We are already planning when we can come again!
The description and photos do not really give enough information about this place. It is not clear from the photo but this is on the second floor with a unit below it and one next to it all in the same structure. It is also a hike down from the parking lot (stairs over dunes). The washer and dryer are coin operated and most people do not bring 10 quarters do do a load of laundry. There is satellite/cable on the tv but minimal channels and the wifi is unreliable and slow.
Now for the good. The location is great as it is probably less than a half mile walk on the beach to the park, which otherwise charges for entry by car. Great views of the lake and sunset from the balcony. It would have been nice for us to know ahead of time that the owners provide with a TON of beach stuff - toys for children, chairs and two kayaks! You do not need to find a rental place as these are free for guests.
This cottage is so pretty (pictures definitely do not do it justice), peaceful & quiet, immaculately clean and equipped with everything you might need. The view is incredible, and the owners are so helpful and sweet. I felt very safe and relaxed, even alone. I wished I could have stayed longer, and I hope to return.
My husband and I spent 3 days in this cottage and it was just great. The cottage is nicely decorated and very cozy. We walked the beach, went to a great farmers market and hiked some of the park trails. Ericka and Susan are both very nice and helpful. I was looking for a relaxing weekend it this exactly fit the bill. We loved it!
My husband and I had a very relaxing weekend at the cottage. The cottage is located right on the beach, the photos do not do the cottage justice, looking out of the front room window feels like you are on the water, it is amazing. Erika was very helpful and friendly she even helped us carry our belonging down to the cottage. The cottage was very clean and we had everything we needed. I would recommend this cottage to friends and relatives and hopefully will be renting it again myself. We enjoyed the European Market in Chesterton, we bought the best cookies ever there! We watched a movie in Michigan City which was close. Mostly we just enjoyed the sound of the waves and watched the stars.
Just got back from a weekend stay and it was amazing. Pictures do not do this place justice. The house was everything you could want and perfect for a weekend getaway but would be even better for a week long stay or more. The kitchen was awesome, the view was spectacular, the bed was super comfortable and the owners were so nice and helpful.I would recommend this to anyone that is looking for a place to get away. We were blessed with temps in the 70-80's in March so we were very lucky to be able to enjoy the beautiful beach. Would not list this as a downfall just a side note, long steep set of 50+ stairs to get down to your little piece of heaven so do your shopping before hand and make meals there. Trust me once you get there you won't want to leave anyway. Also I recommend bringing paper plates and plastic cups not because there were not enough dishes, because they had wonderful dishes, just because you won't want to waste your time washing dishes!!! Keep in mind downstairs unti has 2 bedrooms and is just as wonderful for larger parties!!
