Robert, a self proclaimed 'lifer' in theatre who came to the Catskills as a child & Anna, a freelance Yoga instructor who grew up in the Canadian Rockies searched for almost two years for a second home as a getaway from their hectic New York City schedules. This house was the very first property they saw and after being taken off the market and then put back on, they bought it to share with other lovers of The Hudson Valley & The Catskills. The House is located close to plenty of recreational activities in addition to being quiet enough to not do anything at all. It's up to you.
Anna and Rob purchased this chateau / country house in 2009
A welcome box of locally made chocolates.
The following is transposed from a hand written note from one of our June 2012 guests:
To the owners,
Thank you for the use of your home. We enjoyed our stay here. Even yesterday when it was quite warm, we were able to keep the house cool with the air conditioners & fan. We liked the farm animals next door, by the way. I also enjoyed the book collection. The Jeanne Michaels Catskill guidebook was a real treat and a help - and the Hemingway short story book too.
We began our trip with The Clearwater Music Festival. We are leaving the folding chairs we bought for that here - hopefully useful to someone. Pay it forward is a good way to live. We highly recommend the 2-2.5 hour boat ride on The Mystic Whaler from the festival dock. It was lovely. We now head back to the airport and will be back in Memphis this evening.
Thanks also for the chocolate. Regards,
Gary & Barb, Memphis TN
Just perfect for my husband and I to celebrate a quiet weekend alone! The house was clean and inviting! Very impressed by it being so well stocked. We bought charcoal and wood and found it there in the shed already, so we used that and were happy to leave ours behind for the next guests.
We spent the first day grilling on the outside deck and later roasted s'mores in the fire pit! We drove into Saugerites and Woodstock which was a very short drive to both!
The next day we spent at the Hudson Valley Wine and Food festival. We hurried home in the evening to catch the sunset on the back deck, and then we proceeded to end the night with appetizers and cocktails at the Lazy Swan right down the street.
Drinking coffee on the deck and watching the horses next door was priceless in the way of peace and quiet. Bed was comfortable and we're early birds so we could appreciate the wake up call from the rooster next door!
The owners were helpful and I would recommend this property and have already! Not to mention my husband and I will most definitely be returning.
My wife son and I loved the peacefulness. We also enjoyed the kitchen and the location (close to Saugerties and Woodstock). One problem we had was that we were told that the place had a baby gate but we were not told that the baby gate was broken. The bedroom is at the top of a steep flight of chairs and if we knew this before we would not of made the reservation. We emailed the owner and asked for a reasonable reimbursement (20 percent) and never heard back.
We loved our 4 nights at this Saugerties rental.
We rode our bikes up around High Falls, a quiet, historic, moderately hilly, beautiful 10 mile ride that started at the end of the driveway. Another day, we rode into town for coffee at David's and wings at Stella's. We played 9 holes at the Lazy Swan and enjoyed appetizers at their outdoor bar.
When it rained, we watched a movie, laid around In the very firm and comfortable king sized bed, sat in the little living room and read to each other.
Sitting on the back deck watching the horses munch on the pasture and listening to the roosters was very calming. Watching the meteor shower from the backyard was magical.
The owners were friendly and very helpful.
Highly recommend this delightful little spot.
My husband is from Saugerties and we often visit, sometimes staying with friends and sometimes in a local B & B or hotel. Never again! This will be our go-to from now on.
The house is more charming than the photos and has a fully-stocked kitchen, nice eating area and a small living room. The upstairs bedroom is large and bright with a window AC unit. The weekend we visited the temperatures were in the 90's and the window unit was sufficient. There is a full bath downstairs with a washer and dryer. The real bonus is the large outdoor deck and privacy. The house is set back off a main road and you can be in downtown Saugerties in minutes.
The owners were responsive and helpful. We had fresh flowers, herbs and Krause's chocolates for our arrival. The house was clean, the bed was comfy and there were plenty of towels. We will definitely return.
I surprised my boyfriend with a weekend stay at this country house for our 3rd anniversary. The house was a bit smaller than I anticipated but was quaint, rustic, and charming. All the the things needed for a comfortable escape from the city. It was also a convenient 2-hour drive from NYC.
I only spoke with the male owner, Robert, once during our stay, but I found him to be warm, helpful, and accommodating. I mostly spoke with the female owner, Anna, and found her to be a bit tepid -- neither cold nor warm -- in demeanor but helpful nonetheless. The 2 times she and I spoke during our stay I actually felt like I was bothering her. I also sent her a text immediately after our stay to thank her for the accommodations and say I'd be back in touch and got no response.
Either way, the house is a delightful abode for a quick excursion from NYC. You will not be disappointed with the house and the friendliness of the people in nearby Saugerties.
We came during peak leaf peeping season to visit the Sheep and Wool festival in Rhinebeck and we had a wonderful time. The view was spectacular, and we woke up to deer in the yard every morning. I would definitely stay again!
