Overview

Volcano Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

We have built a BRAND NEW comfortable secluded 1300 sq.ft. home in the volcano fern forest. We love spending time here for the quiet atmosphere, fireside experience and relaxed peaceful getaway feeling. We want to share it with you in hopes that you will find this too. This is the 'Big Island' and if you are visiting Kona, it's a long drive to circle the island in one day, so making a couple nights stay in the Volcano area at our place will be the ideal way to do it.

There is so much to see and do at the Volcano National Park, not to mention visiting Hilo and the beaches there. Or just 'STAY OHIA' like we do to relax and enjoy the fern forest and quiet. Our place is full of the best that we always wanted in a get away cabin, such as pine walls, black granite counter tops, slate and tigerwood floors, stainless steel appliances and the latest in media entertainment, all the way from the old fashion record player to a large flat screen high definition tv, Ipod docking and the ability to see your computer on the tv for slide shows of your most recent trips.

We are long time residents of Kona and are used to helping tourists have the best time while they're here so feel free to email us. All the best with your travels, Mike and Liz

About Liz Wright

My husband Mike works for a catamaran company in Kona. I have a professional cleaning business as a self employed owner for more than 20 years. I have lived in Kona for 35 years, originally from Vancouver, Canada, and Mike has been here for 26 years, originally from Oahu. We own our home in Kona and enjoy the volcano area when we can. If you are going to Kona, ask about our rental, 'STAY KONA' Mike Cabral and Elizabeth Wright

Liz Wright purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Liz Wright chose Volcano

We love this area because it's so opposite from Kona. It's cool and country with beautiful fern forests all around. If you are going to Kona, ask about our rental, 'STAY KONA'

What makes this cabin unique

I've always loved a 'real wood burning' fireplace and that is what we have at our spacious cabin style home. It's a warm comfortable atmosphere that allows us to enjoy the things we don't in the faster pace of Kona, like playing music, board games or just relaxing with good conversation. I do a bit of running and the neighborhoods are generally flat and free of roaming dogs.

This cozy cabin is extremely clean, well appointed, and very welcoming. Use the space heaters and/or the wood stove (great instructions provided) to keep away the damp and chill and you'll be very comfortable. Liz was very responsive to our e-mails - she has the aloha spirit!

Attention to details

  • 5 of 5
We loved this house! First of all, it's beautiful. So welcoming, we felt like it was a home not just a rental.
There are many extras that you do not find in many rentals, such as plastic bags, flashlights, umbrellas and even muffins in the fridge. :) I did find the house a bit cold and humid (it was raining when we got there and rained the whole night), but it could have been easily fixed by starting a fire (we just didn't). I recommend that you do if it gets too cold since it the middle of the rainforest the humidity will worsen the cold sensation.
The house is a couple of minutes form the entrance of the Volcanoes National Park which is great.
Liz was friendly and helpful. I would go back again.

Not quite idyllic

  • of 5
We had read the rave reviews so had high expectations. To be sure, the owners had put a lot of effort into renovating the cottage and it's location was ideally located a few minutes from the park and close to several decent restaurants. What was missing was attention to detail which we felt affected the quality of our stay. The cottage has a very musty and unpleasant smell, not mitigated by the dehumidifier; where the firelighters, wax paper and clear wrap should have been were 3 empty boxes instead and when we asked the owner she suggested we could climb a ladder and search the loft for more (!); a sign on the dishwasher said out of order and when we asked were told they were waiting for a part (common courtesy would suggest being told about this beforehand should have been the way to go); a jug in the bathroom labelled filtered water poured out bits if cork along with the water; the barbecue had to be cleaned before it could be used and then neither the igniter nor the temperature gauge worked; we went to dry our towels instead of using clean ones and found a load of laundry still in the dryer and a lint trap that looked like it had never been emptied; the mattress in the main bedroom is too small for the platform exposing sharp edges that gave us a couple of bruises; and a plethora of scraps of paper with handwritten instructions were strewn everywhere when a couple of neatly typed pages would have been neater. Overall, the housekeeping was lacking.

Owner's Response: Thank you for acknowledging that we put a lot of effort in our design and furnishing of our cabin. Our goal is to do our best to assure that our place provides comfort and cleanliness with the warmth of home away from home. Being that it is in the middle of a rainforest, there are times of the year with more rainfall bringing higher humidity. We prepare for that with the use of two dehumidifiers, a fireplace and a humidity gauge. Our maid lets us know the humidity reading and we adjust accordingly. She and previous guests had not mentioned any musty smells so this is the first we heard about it. We do a special deep cleaning at least once a month. The guests right after their stay gave us a wonderful personal review with no mention of unpleasant smells. We try to keep everything well stocked with backups in our laundry area loft. We provide many extras that most rentals don't and well traveled guests let us know they appreciate it. The previous guests may have used more firestarters than usual and the maid didn't expect it to be empty. When we spoke over the phone about having more in the loft they didn't let us know it was a problem. We just recently had a dishwasher problem. After ordering the part, it was fixed in a timely matter. These things do happen without warning.
We have queen mattresses on platform beds that were made for them. We have never had complaints before. They are very comfortable and allow for good ventilation and easy access for cleaning.
We always send our guests an email with the directions to our place, their entry code reminder for the keys and detailed house information . In addition we do have some footnotes that many guests have expressed their appreciation for the info being so handy in the location that instruction was needed.
We have two filtered water stations, one in the kitchen and one on the back lanai. It is very easy for anyone to get a glass or pitcher of water from the cupboard, fill it up and take it to the bathroom for their needs. I do try to provide a container for convenience in the bathroom and had no idea there was a problem so we will replace it.
The BBQ is cleaned on a regular basis. A metal cleaning brush helps between cleanings. A fire lighter stick is also provided.
If you look at our reviews before and after, you will see that guests are very pleased with their stay. Let us know while you are here if you have any issues so we can do our best to resolve them. ALOHA

This rental did not disappoint! It was absolutely beautiful inside and only a few minutes away from Volcanoes National Park. They even had muffins in the fridge for us for breakfast!

Great location!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here for 4 nights in June of 2014. The owner provides everything you could possibly need. They have complimentary bagels and muffins in the freezer waiting for you in case you can't get to the store beforehand. Definitely do your shopping in Hilo as this house is 30 minutes away and there is not much in Volcano Village. Make sure to bring warm clothes as it is very chilly at night. It was 55 in the house when we woke up in the morning! They provide nice heaters and a really nice wood burning stove. I was really surprised because I am from Colorado and am used to altitude and cooler nights. The humidity makes a big difference. The owner has lots of instructions for everything and the location to the national park is great. It was nice to go hiking in the park and come "home" in about 5 minutes. The photos represent the rental nicely, the kitchen is stocked well and it is very clean! You will not be disappointed in this rental.
