'Cottage in the Forest'

This beautiful little cottage is tucked into a small forest, with a view of the Hanalei Mountains. Where you will awaken each morning to the symphony of sounds and sights of a peaceful rural mountain setting.

Our three and a half Acre Property is located at the end of a cul-de-sac, and just a few steps across the property brings you to a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains and Kalihiwai River Valley.

Enjoy the endlessly fascinating interaction and play of the resident birds and animals. Chickens, Ducks, Peacocks, Goats, Dogs, Cats and Horses, all co-exist on our property and provide hours of entertainment.

All this is only a five minute drive to beautiful Kalihiwai Bay, where Kalihiwai River enters the ocean. It is our favorite beach, great for boogie boarding and surfing. Also a five minute drive takes you to Anini Beach, a very long beach with a double reef, where you can spend your days: Wind Surfing, Kayaking, Sailing or just enjoying the Ocean environment. Anini also has a large Beach Park.

You will be only 15 minutes from the world famous Hanalei Bay and the Princeville Resort, where you will find the 27 hole Makai Golf Course, the world class Prince Golf Course, and the Princeville Shopping Center. There are two Horse Riding Stables very near by, and the North Shore boasts many hiking trails.

The accommodations are light, airy and beautifully furnished. The claw foot tub in the bathroom is especially charming and looks out a corner picture window on to a private garden.

We love it here and love sharing the unique charm and quiet country atmosphere. Best of all, we are only minutes from some of the best beaches in the world.

Heavenly Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our first experience booking with VRBO, our first visit to Kauai (actually first visit to Hawaii itself), and we couldn't have been happier! The Cottage in the Forest is everything you read in the reviews, and the details on VRBO...and everything you see in the photos shown in the listing! AND MORE! Because when you're there, you add in the fresh wonderful smells of the lush forest, plants, and flowers, as well as the sounds of the birds, rain at night, etc. It was beyond what we could have hoped for. We weren't sure what the road '3 miles back in' would be like...it turned out to be one of the LOVELIEST 3 miles on Kauai! It's a beautiful 'landscaped' garden of a drive...with views of mountains both coming and going, and the road is nicely paved. The personal gated entry/drive to Susan's cottage is equally lovely. The cottage was just perfect for us! We LOVED the comfy cozy feel of it all..yet it was so clean, well-maintained, comfortable bed...all with that 'island feel'.. and had everything we could have needed, and more! We didn't want the 'cold/modern/stiff look or feel of highrise hotels and condos. This cottage is exactly the opposite of that, and exactly the kind of place we pictured for our visit to the "Garden Island" of Kauai! The setting is private, serene, and beautiful. Seeing the lush surroundings, out the floor to ceiling windows everywhere we turned made us feel we were part of the 'scenery'. We had all the slatted windows (high, low and in-between, open every night and never slept better. The claw foot tub and many windows in the bathroom, as well as the outdoor shower, made it easy to slow down, relax, and enjoy the 'island life' while we were there. We spent our days checking out everything we could on Kauai (Helicopter ride to the Na'Pali coast, drive up Waimea Canyon, Poipu Beach, End of the Road (Ke'e Beach, Tunnels, Bali Hai,) the sweetest town...Hanalei ....and though our days were full and non-stop, we looked forward to the evening drive back to the Cottage in the Forest and the peace and quiet we knew was waiting for us. Susan was so wonderful to work with, instant replies, easy booking and payments, and warmly welcomed us when we arrived. We highly recommend Susan's "Cottage in the Forest", and look forward to returning some day!!

Nice Cottage

  • 4 of 5

My stay was fine, but I found the queen bed uncomfortable, woke up with an aching back each morning. Everything that others wrote is true, and I did have one of Hawaii's huge cockroaches inside one night, flying around, which is always a bit of a scary experience, even when you have grown up with them around you in Hawaii. I did like the fluffy comfortable chairs, for viewing the tv or writing on my laptop, and I am never a fan of bar height chairs and I missed a dining table. Susan was warm and kind, but also appears very busy and doesn't have much time for renters, and I think the outside shower needs some help too. The mosquitoes were not bad for me, but I didn't sit outside here, and the rooster noise was minimal. I did want a rural and dark evening experience, in a "pretty" environment, and I got it.

Owner's Response: I have never EVER had a guest complain about the mattress! It is a $1200.00 mattress, and most guests tell me how comfortable it is. She also owns a Vacation Rental, so understands how devastating a negative review can be. She was making negative comments from the moment she walked in. Most of my guests are awestruck when they arrive and are grateful to be staying in such a beautiful place. PLEASE READ THE REST OF THE REVIEWS!!!!!!

gorgeous hideaway

  • 4 of 5

We've been to Kauai several times, and we never stayed in the same place twice. This cottage, however, I would come back to. We loved everything about it: the bed with a view of nothing but green, the jungle concerts early in the morning, the peace and quiet away from the crowds (but still just a 5 minute drive to a nice beach), the thoughtfulness it was appointed with (from hairdryer, beach chairs and condiments to mosquito spray). I have to admit I was a little cautious at first about prepaying (which seems to be the norm for private accomodation in Kauai), but the owner's prompt answers to all my questions put me at ease. And everything worked out perfectly. There's only one thing we did not like during our 8 day stay: I guess it was mosquito season - and we got bitten up so bad that we hardly dared to sit on that gorgous little patio, even with mosquito coils smouldering.

Owner's Response: We did have a very wet Spring, so the mosquitoes were plentiful, especially in the early evenings. That happens in the Tropics. The Cottage is completely screened, so it helps if you remember to close the doors.

Great hideaway for relaxed holidays

  • 4 of 5

We loved this special cottage in the forrest. It is lovely decorated and had everything we needed. To wake up with the peacocks landing on the roof and the chicken in the garden was a different but nice experience for us. We also enjoyed the outdoor shower. As the name says, it is located away from the main road up in the forrest and while driving the 3 miles long road to the cottage, we soke up the beautiful mountain views. Kauai is a breathtaking island with great nature and there's a lot of fun and adventure. But don't forget to be prepared against the mosquitos - they may love you ;-)

Mom and 9 year old son - perfect "Club House"

  • 5 of 5

I think most people who enjoy the cottage are couples, but I must say the Cottage was an equal treat for my 9 year old son and I. It's simply perfect - cute, beautiful and charming.

The drive in is wonderful as the hills come closer and you go deeper into the lush garden community. We opted to leave every window open for sleeping and there is really nothing better than hearing the nightly rain in the trees. We loved the soaking tub and fun outdoor shower.

The location is perfect - so much to do on the north shore!. What I appreciated was the peace. We began our split stay vacation on the south shore staying at the Grand Hyatt with a ocean side room and the relentless pacific ocean was getting to me. I also felt like we always needed to be DOING something because we were surrounded by the resort. Here at the Cottage you go to the beach, go to the ocean, take an adventure but you get to come home to tranquility and relax.

Loved the birds and animals. We spent a few hours each day in the wonderfully comfortable living room chairs reading our books while we played the Hawaii CD's on continuous loop.

Most of all, Susan is a wonderful hostess and simply a joy to work with. The process was smooth and we can't wait to go back. Mahalo!
