PUAKO - ACROSS FROM OCEAN - ISLAND-STYLE & KID FRIENDLY CONDO

Puako Condo Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)

Hawaiian Style, Comfortably Furnished, Beach Condo. This remodeled unit has been updated and is furnished with comfort and completeness in mind. We Love Puako!!! - and we have tried to make it so this condo will enable you to have a great and easy stay here. It was chosen and remodeled with Kids and Parents in mind; with a flat screen TV and DVD player (and family DVD rentals right next door), great Broadband and WiFi, and beds are firm, designed for people who have not been gentle to their backs.

The waters around Puako are great - they are very clean, and three of the islands' largest and nicest white sand beaches (Waikoloa, Hapuna & Mauna Kea) are in adjacent coves within two miles of the condo. For those times in between visits to the beach, the condo has a nice, gated pair of pools. One is small and shallow, ideal for kids under 3. The other is larger but by no means a lap pool.

Our Community: Puako is a relaxed, beachfront community, and this unit is ideally located to make your life easy and relaxed. We are next door to the quaint and funky Puako General Store - a reasonably priced and incredibly convenient place with supplies for everything from breakfast to dinner to cocktail fixings and a DVD for the kids. If you stay for a few weeks, you may want to do one stock-up trip into Kona (30 minute away with Costco, Safeway, etc...) or Waimea (western style town, home of the Parker Ranch, about 15-20 minutes away, and with a gigantic western style wooden play structure to make the trip fun) and you can spend the rest of the trip being mellow on the beach.

Fun Family Activities: We have a map of all the best locations for activities ranging from a hand-built sheltered rock tide-pool for your toddler to play in, to romantic beaches on which to watch a sunset. Toss the cooler in the car, and enjoy a different sunset beach within a 5 minute drive each night. 3 large world class beaches and one that we don't like quite as much are all really near by. Pick the beach that has the combination of sand, surf & snorkeling that suits your fancy on each day. During the winter Hapuna has great body surfing - with regular nice sized waves every day. Wailea Bay has lots of trees right next to the ocean - it is a great beach to enjoy some shade but with your toes in the sand. It is hard to go wrong! There are also lots of smaller beaches directly off of Puako road, accessible through pretty well marked signs, with walks to the beach typically being less that 50 feet.

If you want to eat out....: The nearest access is a great one - it is just a block away (and fine to walk), with a sheltered lava-rock pool for the kids, and decent entry for a nice, early morning scuba dive.

If you want to go out for meals, both modest and fancy restaurants are within a 10-15 minute drive, ranging from the resorts of Mauna Kea, Mauna Lani and the Hapuna Prince to the nearby town of Kawaihae, home of excellent shave ice and complete with an open-daily Farmer's Market - our best source for papaya, vegetables and sweet cane rice sticks. Slightly upcountry is Hawi, a lovely artist community with the best ice cream on the island. We have a list of restaurants we have personally tried, plus a list of other places that have been well recommended.

If you want to stay home, you can sit on the Lanai and enjoy the ocean breeze, and use the newly renovated kitchen (designed by me - someone who really likes to cook).

We welcome you to Hale Hanu (Turtle House) in our delightful community here in Puako.

Our family has been coming to Puako for over 10 years and we finally invested in our own little peice of heaven. We are happy to share it with you!

Owner purchased this condo in 2010

Puako is a very unique, lovely, laid-back community. There is only one commercial establishment on the whole private road, and that is Narand's General Store. It is safe, quiet and chock-a-block with what makes Hawaii a special place.

Beaches of different characters up and down the road, but the very best snorkeling, diving and tidepooling are right across the street.

EXCELLENT RENTAL

  • 5 of 5
This Condo had everything we needed. Plenty of beach equipment for our family of 5. Kitchen well equipped. Just a couple of minute drive from our favorite beach, Hapuna. Easy to come and go for lunch. Would choose this condo again. Very quiet complex to stay in.

Owner's Response: We are always happy to hear that people use the condo just as we do - easy to come and go, comfortable and complete when at home. We would welcome this family again and hope they will return!

LOVE PUAKO

  • 5 of 5
This was our second time of being able to stay in the condo. It is an extremely well equipped, well managed vacation condo very close to wonderful beaches and places worth exploring. We enjoyed everything the condo had to offer with the pool , the beach across the street, watching the turtles, and a little market right next door. The furnishings were comfortable, the kitchen fully supplied and plenty of snorkel gear, beach chairs, sand toys and other assorted outdoor supplies. Sara is the manager and she works so hard to keep the flowers and fruit trees in beautiful condition. We always enjoy chatting with her when we get there and she is always available for any questions. The fruit trees are wonderful, we had bananas off the tree for breakfast. I can't wait to go back soon!

Owner's Response: We are so happy to have return guests - and this family loves it here as much as we do. The comfort level we try to provide is just that - "comfortable." Not fancy or elegant but really a place you can call home as you adventure hither and yon. These are great guests who make our home their own - just as we intended.

TOO LITTLE SPACE

  • 3 of 5
It's wonderful being in Hawaii; however, a few things.....
although there are 3 bedrooms, there is not enough general living space. We were 6 people, but we could not all sit down to eat together; there is only space for 4. Balcony space is also limited, as is closet space. We felt very cramped. There were also many ants, which we know is a problem there, but Terro liquid ant traps may help.
We paid our bill promptly. However, we returned home from there on June 27th. We did not receive our security deposit back until August 20th, and then only after I sent a reminder email.
Not much can spoil Hawaii, but I will look elsewhere for accommodations in the future.

Owner's Response: We often pull in the smaller chairs from the lanai to accomodate 6 at the glass dining table. In fact, we did a full Thanksgiving dinner there last year but it is definitely more comfortable for 4. The gear does take up a lot of space, but is there for our guests convenience. It is costly to rent that stuff - so we provide it as a matter of course. The ants are always an issue, and I've never tried this type of trap. We've normally used what our exterminator sets out, but I will forward the suggestion. And the damage deposit was late, for which I apologized. We had a family illness and I was quite preoccupied for a bit. Hopefully this won't happen again.

GREAT LOCATION BUT...

  • 3 of 5
The condo itself was nice and roomy and very stocked with beach stuff- to the point that we had to move stuff around to hang something long in any closet. We had a bug issue in the kitchen. Whoever cleaned the kitchen counter before us clearly did not move the toaster as there were a whole load of ants under it feasting on crumbs. The tiny ants continued to be an unfortunate issue from then on. I also want to mention there is no air conditioning. This might not have been a serious issue since there usually is a nice breeze but the screaming baby (he screamed for hours and that is no exageration) in the unit next door made our nights pretty miserable. It is sad to feel so tired on vacation because we couldn't sleep well. I know this baby is not the owner of our unit's fault but it really was a problem. We loved the little pool, the general store next door, the interesting beaches across the street but mostly that Hapuna Beach was so close. Our kids boogie boarded there every day! We have mixed feelings about our recent stay, not sure we would stay there again.

Owner's Response: I am always glad to get feedback when something isn't quite up to snuff. I've already had a conversation with my cleaning lady who will be talking to her staff about taking extra care. Ants are always there - only the monthly pest control people keep them at bay, and boy are we thankful for them! It's very true we have a lot of beach gear - chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, and snorkeling gear for kids and adults. It's part of what we offer instead of having guests have to rent or bring their own from home. I wish it took less room too! I'm very glad the kids got to boogie board Hapuna. When the surf is up - it is the best beach ever! And the baby - well, ours was once a baby too and is now thankfully considerably less noisy. I am sorry that it interrupted our guests' sleep. That's no fun for anyone. Hopefully the baby has moved on to other locations now!

EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR A GREAT STAY IN PUAKO

  • 5 of 5
We usually try to avoid condos because we are light sleepers, and condos and hotels usually mean noise. Not at this Puako condo- it is very well maintained and the people there are very kind and considerate. No late-night partiers or roving bands of teenagers.

The condo itself has everything - beach chairs, towels, snorkel gear, which is a huge plus, in addition to the well-stocked kitchen. The owner even accommodated our arrival on Easter Sunday, and was easy to reach by email at all times.

Finally, I can't say enough about Puako itself- what an amazing place! Across the street and to the right of the condo is public beach access to a small sandy beach which was perfect for watching the amazing sunsets, and across the street to the left are tidal pools full of Pacific Green Sea turtles. We saw 9 of them there the morning that we left. It's worth the short drive on the Old Puako road north to Hapuna beach and Beach 69. Whales jumping out of the water and great waves.

Owner's Response: We were so fortunate that this couple was willing to be flexible on arrival, especially since Easter is a very special time for many people on the island. We were thankful that our amazing caretaker was able to get Hale Honu ready for new guests, and equally thankful that our departing family had a 9am flight! Holiday crossovers are tricky, and I am so glad that everyone had a lovely time.

WONDERFUL, WELL-MAINTAINED & SUNNY CORNER CONDO

Wonderful, well-maintained & sunny corner condo
  • 5 of 5
My brother and I stayed here for 12 days. We enjoyed it so much. It has a well-appointed kitchen with everything we needed. Lots of sun, beautiful location. Thank you both for sharing this well-maintained
condo. Having been to Puako before, we were so pleased to find that Sara was still managing the units. We had a wonderful time exploring the Kona and Kohala beaches. Just a super condo with everything a person could use. Lots of sun because it is a corner unit on the 2nd floor. Just a quick mile down to some of the best beaches on the Island!

Owner's Response: We are so glad to appeal to so many different types of family configurations and couldn't agree more with this review. One of the highlights of anyone's stay at the Puako Condos is getting to know our manager Sarah. She is the resident "Plant Mamma" as our five year old describes her, and is a font of information about all things Puako.

Fantastic Shore Diving & Body Surfing, Yet with beaches and pools gentle enough for toddlers! Nearby beach regularly voted #1 on the Big Island. Puako reef is one of the nicest in the islands, and this unit is within 200 yards of a good shore entry for scuba divers, and within 1 mile of one of the best shore dive locations on the Islands. Tank rental/refills, Gear Rental and Boat Dives available in nearby Kawaihae (10 minutes away). Fantastic Body Surfing at Hapuna Beach (mostly during the winter months), but still gentle enough for the little ones. Great Beaches within minutes for all ages. Our daughter loved these beaches from the time she could walk!
