|Minimum Stay||4 nights|
Hawaiian-Style, Well Appointed Beach Condo. This unit is equipped with all appliances, accoutrements and amenities. We Love Puako!!! - and we have tried to make it so this condo will enable you to have a great and easy stay here. It was chosen and remodeled with Kids and Parents in mind; with a flat screen TV and DVD player (and family DVD rentals right next door), great Broadband and WiFi, and beds are firm, designed for people who have not been gentle to their backs.
The waters around Puako are great - they are very clean, and three of the islands' largest and nicest white sand beaches (Waikoloa, Hapuna & Mauna Kea) are in adjacent coves within two miles of the condo. For those times in between visits to the beach, the condo has a nice, gated pair of pools. One is small and shallow, ideal for kids under 3. The other is larger but by no means a lap pool.
Puako is a relaxed, beachfront community, and this unit is ideally located to make your life easy and relaxed. We are next door to the quaint and funky Puako General Store - a reasonably priced and incredibly convenient place with supplies for everything from breakfast to dinner to cocktail fixings and a DVD for the kids. If you stay for a few weeks, you may want to do one stock-up trip into Kona (30 minute away with Costco, Safeway, etc...) or Waimea (western style town, home of the Parker Ranch, about 15-20 minutes away, and with a gigantic western style wooden play structure to make the trip fun) and you can spend the rest of the trip being mellow on the beach.
We have a map of all the best locations for activities ranging from a hand-built sheltered rock tide-pool for your toddler to play in, to romantic beaches on which to watch a sunset. Toss the cooler in the car, and enjoy a different sunset beach within a 5 minute drive each night. 3 large world class beaches and one that we don't like quite as much are all really near by. Pick the beach that has the combination of sand, surf & snorkeling that suits your fancy on each day. During the winter Hapuna has great body surfing - with regular nice sized waves every day. Wailea Bay has lots of trees right next to the ocean - it is a great beach to enjoy some shade but with your toes in the sand. It is hard to go wrong! There are also lots of smaller beaches directly off of Puako road, accessible through pretty well marked signs, with walks to the beach typically being less that 50 feet. The nearest access is a great one - it is just a block away (and fine to walk), with a sheltered lava-rock pool for the kids, and decent entry for a nice, early morning scuba dive.
If you want to go out for meals, both modest and fancy restaurants are within a 10-15 minute drive, ranging from the resorts of Mauna Kea, Mauna Lani and the Hapuna Prince to the nearby town of Kawaihae, home of excellent shave ice and complete with an open-daily Farmer's Market - our best source for papaya, vegetables and sweet cane rice sticks. Slightly upcountry is Hawi, a lovely artist community with the best ice cream on the island. We have a list of restaurants we have personally tried, plus a list of other places that have been well recommended.
If you want to stay home, you can sit on the Lanai and enjoy the ocean breeze, and use the renovated kitchen (designed by me - someone who really likes to cook).
We welcome you to Hale Hanu (Turtle House) in our delightful little community here in Puako.
All the best, Kimberley and Alan

The owners live in Washington State, and enjoy the wonderful contrast of living in the Pacific Northwest coupled with having access to warmth and waves whenever we get away. We're both in technology - hence the high speed internet. We've got a seven year old who grew up going to Hale Hanu and wants to return as often as she can (as do we...). We very much enjoy sharing our home with friends and family.
Kimberley Lippman purchased this condo in 2010
We love it here - plain and simple. The people are lovely, the environment is quiet and unpretentious, and with the Puako General Store right next door you are never completely out of luck when cooking a meal and needing a surprise ingredient. The beaches are the best - and having a nearby option with lots of shade is great when you've got little kids. Nothing happens here. We like that a lot.
The quiet, the birds, the wild turkeys, quail and finches that abound, the fresh fruit from the garden, amazing beaches right across the street, tide pooling, turtles and a gentle breeze to keep things cool. Puako is a great location from which to get just about anywhere on the island - either upcountry or around the horn to Hilo. South is easy too.
Let's face it, the Big Island is a big big island...so there's really no central spot that is convenient everything. But if anything is close to that, I recommend Puako and this condo in particular. The luxury resorts are nearby - and that's where the rich people in our party stayed so we could still be 'close' - the drives most other destinations were all on the order of an hour or so, and that covers from Mauna Kea summit to Waipio Valley to Pololu Beach to Hilo and botanical gardens.
Arrangements for this condo could not have been easier and we're handled ny the owners with promptness and care. The 3 rooms were all quite comfortable and there was an abundance of things already in the condo so all one really needed was food and a good attitude.
Having the convenience of a market next door is great (closes at 7p though). We really appreciated the access to a string of beaches on the Puako Road as well. I was told Neil Young lives down there somewhere, too.
I give this a top recommendation!
This Condo had everything we needed. Plenty of beach equipment for our family of 5. Kitchen well equipped. Just a couple of minute drive from our favorite beach, Hapuna. Easy to come and go for lunch. Would choose this condo again. Very quiet complex to stay in.
This was our second time of being able to stay in the condo. It is an extremely well equipped, well managed vacation condo very close to wonderful beaches and places worth exploring. We enjoyed everything the condo had to offer with the pool , the beach across the street, watching the turtles, and a little market right next door. The furnishings were comfortable, the kitchen fully supplied and plenty of snorkel gear, beach chairs, sand toys and other assorted outdoor supplies. Sara is the manager and she works so hard to keep the flowers and fruit trees in beautiful condition. We always enjoy chatting with her when we get there and she is always available for any questions. The fruit trees are wonderful, we had bananas off the tree for breakfast. I can't wait to go back soon!
It's wonderful being in Hawaii; however, a few things.....
although there are 3 bedrooms, there is not enough general living space. We were 6 people, but we could not all sit down to eat together; there is only space for 4. Balcony space is also limited, as is closet space. We felt very cramped. There were also many ants, which we know is a problem there, but Terro liquid ant traps may help.
We paid our bill promptly. However, we returned home from there on June 27th. We did not receive our security deposit back until August 20th, and then only after I sent a reminder email.
Not much can spoil Hawaii, but I will look elsewhere for accommodations in the future.
The condo itself was nice and roomy and very stocked with beach stuff- to the point that we had to move stuff around to hang something long in any closet. We had a bug issue in the kitchen. Whoever cleaned the kitchen counter before us clearly did not move the toaster as there were a whole load of ants under it feasting on crumbs. The tiny ants continued to be an unfortunate issue from then on. I also want to mention there is no air conditioning. This might not have been a serious issue since there usually is a nice breeze but the screaming baby (he screamed for hours and that is no exageration) in the unit next door made our nights pretty miserable. It is sad to feel so tired on vacation because we couldn't sleep well. I know this baby is not the owner of our unit's fault but it really was a problem. We loved the little pool, the general store next door, the interesting beaches across the street but mostly that Hapuna Beach was so close. Our kids boogie boarded there every day! We have mixed feelings about our recent stay, not sure we would stay there again.
We usually try to avoid condos because we are light sleepers, and condos and hotels usually mean noise. Not at this Puako condo- it is very well maintained and the people there are very kind and considerate. No late-night partiers or roving bands of teenagers.
The condo itself has everything - beach chairs, towels, snorkel gear, which is a huge plus, in addition to the well-stocked kitchen. The owner even accommodated our arrival on Easter Sunday, and was easy to reach by email at all times.
Finally, I can't say enough about Puako itself- what an amazing place! Across the street and to the right of the condo is public beach access to a small sandy beach which was perfect for watching the amazing sunsets, and across the street to the left are tidal pools full of Pacific Green Sea turtles. We saw 9 of them there the morning that we left. It's worth the short drive on the Old Puako road north to Hapuna beach and Beach 69. Whales jumping out of the water and great waves.
Fantastic Shore Diving & Body Surfing, Yet with beaches and pools gentle enough for toddlers! Nearby beach regularly voted #1 on the Big Island. Puako reef is one of the nicest in the islands, and this unit is within 200 yards of a good shore entry for scuba divers, and within 1 mile of one of the best shore dive locations on the Islands. Tank rental/refills, Gear Rental and Boat Dives available in nearby Kawaihae (10 minutes away). Fantastic Body Surfing at Hapuna Beach (mostly during the winter months), but still gentle enough for the little ones. Great Beaches within minutes for all ages. Our daughter loved these beaches from the time she could walk!
