Some History: Building a frame house in Breckenridge before the arrival of the railroad was no small task. To erect this c.1881 house and the one next door (301 N. Main),Breckenridge saloon keeper Joseph F. Reeder had to chop down trees, drag them to the sawmill, have them milled for different uses—siding, flooring, shingles, etc.—and let them dry. Inflating the cost of construction was the need to pack finished building materials—nails, paint, and doors— over a high mountain pass at a cost of forty cents per pound.
In 1888, John Williams, a hard rock miner, and his wife, Minta, purchased the house as their home. After John and Minta’s separation in 1890, Minta and their daughter, Ethel, continued to live here until 1906, renting it out from time to time as they pursued an acting career for Ethel.
The Williams House is featured in the Historic Walking Tour.

If you're going to get a large group together for a weekend getaway, this is the place to check out. This cute little house sits right on Main St and is directly behind the Peak 8 gondolas at Breckenridge. There were 16 of us who stayed in the house and there was plenty of room! There are 5 master rooms, 1 room with twin beds, 1 room with 4 bunk beds, 7 bathrooms, a nice kitchen with 6 burners, and two large TV rooms. I'm slightly claustrophobic and thought that I would have a minor freak out but in the end, I couldn't tell that there were 16 people roaming around.
Next time there is a large group going up for the weekend, I will look here first. I loved the history of the house, in which the owners gladly share with you.
Our family group of 14 - age ranges 1 1/2 to 79 stayed for a week in this wonderful home. It was well suited for a group our size and had many of the amenities that we required (highchair, baby gates, bedrooms, bathrooms, large dining area, dine-in friendly). It was an easy, short walk to the gondola for those trips up the mountain. Easy walk to downtown for dining, shopping, and site-seeing. Roomy for everyone to have a bit of their own space and accommodating for us to be together as well. Two living areas, ample TVs, Wi-Fi - wonderful for the variety entertainment or quiet needed for a family vacation. Only caution, remember your flip-flops for traversing the splinter-friendly deck getting to and from the hot-tub. We would love to stay there again - winter or summer - as the location and amenities are ideal for activities year-round.
From the moment we opened the doors, we were impressed. The property was clean and spacious. The kitchen was well equipped and there were plenty of towels and linens in each room. It was cold and we didn't feel that the heater was working, but luckily there were fireplaces and quite a few portable electric heaters available. The owner was quick to respond and a pleasure to work with! We had a great stay and since it was the perfect location, it accommodated all of our individual interests/activities without any of us having to drive anywhere.
The location of the Williams house was perfect - right on main street within walking distance to all the restaurants and bars. There were a lot of rooms that were all very clean. The main living area was big enough for our large group, and even has a bonus tv room that was great for watching football. I would definitely stay here again!
Our stay was just what we had hoped it would be! We had plenty of room and plenty of bathrooms. The location was awesome and the quaint charm of the house made us feel comfortable and at home.
Thanks for a great weekend!
Our group enjoyed Williams House for our annual ski weekend.
The house is a great size for groups. We were 5 adults, using only 5 of the bedrooms, so we didn't come near to filling the house. Still, the layout is so spacious that even at capacity there would be plenty of room without feeling you are on top of each other.
For us, the greatest feature of Williams house was location, location, location.
Easy 5 minute stroll (in ski boots) to the gondola in the morning and back in the afternoon.
For the evenings (or non-skiers) the Main Street address is convenient walking to all shops and restaurants.
Yes, for more distant rentals, you can rely on the bus service. Walking convenience is just a lot better.
Other great points:
- 2 separate living rooms - if your group has different age groups, you'll love this: Youngsters can congregate in one, Geezers in the other.
- The fireplaces took the chill out of the morning and provided a great ambiance for après-ski.
- Big kitchen and big dining table for group meals
- the hot tub
- The owners were responsive, friendly, and welcoming.
All of us would gladly return again - and we highly recommend Williams House as a great Breckenridge home-away-from-home.
We planned a long weekend for several months and were gratified that there was enough snow at Breckenridge for a fun time. The Williams house was perfect for us. Plenty of room and furnished nicely. The best part is the location. Right on main street, a 3 minute walk to the Gondola, easy walking to all the shops, markets and restaurants. One of the best, the Blue River Bistro, is next door! Of our Colorado ski trips in recent years, including Vail and Steamboat, this was the best.
Ski In/Gondola Out! - Most ideal Location. Center of Town. For ski access 2 min walk to the Gondola (Peak 8), Ski-In via the Skiway (3 min from House). Steps from all Shopping & Dining. No car needed, everyone just comes and goes at their leisure. Next to the Blue River Bistro and Daylight Donuts. 303 N Main street
