This apartment is off of the beaten path and is located on a quiet wooded hillside overlooking Amish farms. The apartment doors open onto Fern Wood Gardens, a terraced display of flowers featured in regional garden tours. This is a peaceful quiet place where vacationers may want to enjoy extended stays. We have wireless internet connection, a full kitchen, a barbecue grill, and a washer and dryer to help make your stay comfortable.
Our place is a quiet relaxing retreat for married couples or small families. We are eight miles from the famous Shady Maple Smorgasbord. On a drive through the country side you will pass old order Amish and Mennonite farms. There are numerous covered bridges, old mills, and plain church meeting houses. There are a number of historic sights in our area and an Amish Mennonite Information center just one mile from our apartment.
The garden is a restful spot where you will want to sit and enjoy a book while hearing the call of the birds, the water splashing in the pond and the croaking of the pond frogs, or the clip-clop of the Amish horses on the road below. You may want to eat your meals in the garden house, make hot dogs, etc. in the garden fire pit or just sit in the garden house during a rain shower and enjoy the fresh smell of the garden.
My husband and I recently stayed at Fernwood in March, 2015. Dawn was very welcoming, warm and gracious! We came back to the apartment every evening to a warm cozy lit fire in the wood burning stove. Dawn was eager to help with any details we asked. She had the cupboards stocked with a few necessities upon our arrival. The home is located in a very quiet, serene area surrounded by Amish families--just Beautiful! We would highly recommend Fernwood for your traveling pleasure.
Fernwood Gardens in one of the most beautiful places we have stayed. The cozy apartment was very roomy, spotless and is so warm and inviting. We were greeted by Dawn ( a wonderful, kind and sincere host) a hand written welcome note on the front door, the warmth of the wood burning stove, soft music, beautiful flowers from the garden and fresh fruit and nuts on the table. The Garden that Dawn has created is nothing short of magnificent and happens to be right outside your front door. The view from the apartment overlooks an expansive Amish Farm. The entire area is Amish Farmlands without the traffic of Route 30 and 340. It is a short scenic drive to all the popular attractions. We loved the area that we were in. We also met Herb who is a perfect compliment to his wife Dawn. The most peaceful environment for some time off from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Can't wait to visit Fernwood Gardens again. Sincere thanks to Dawn and Herb.
My Mom and I have started a tradition of doing Mother/Daughter trips for the past 6 years. This year Mom wanted to learn about and experience the Amish way of living. We were fortunate enough to be joined this year by my husband. We chose to stay at Herb and Dawn's apt. Little did we know what a perfect choice this would be. This place is absolutely amazing, the pictures don't do it justice. The apt. itself is very very clean and we felt right at home. The gardens are absolutely amazing and beautiful. Staying here and being able to enjoy the gardens is like a vacation within a vacation. Herb and Dawn are very welcoming, but not too intrusive if your looking for privacy. We talked to Dawn after being there a couple of days and told her what we were interested in for our vacation and she gave us all kinds of information and told us of places we should go to that were owned by the Amish and weren't so touristy. The house itself is surrounded by Amish farms and beautiful scenery. We were there during harvest season and were able to see the Amish harvesting their corn fields. We would take walks in the morning or evening and everytime we would pass by Amish riding in their buggy's. There is an Amish school right down the road from the house. The location of this apt. is perfect if you want peace and quiet and to be surrounded by and witness the Amish way of living. Highly recommend eating a breakfast sandwich made by a little Amish lady in Churchtown at a place called Olde House Bakery and deli, she also has freshly made pastries, coffee, homemade bread, and Chicken Pies, which are amazing!! We took a tour of the area with Herb, we highly recommend this. He is very informative, he also took us through a couple of covered bridges on our tour. I highly recommend that you get any groceries you need from local farmers or Amish markets. Don't bother with Walmart. The local produce is in abundance and fresh. There is a place called September farms, it's only about a 10 minute drive from the apt., they have excellent sandwiches and quite a few groceries, including milk, sandwich meats and cheeses. We went to Gettysburg one day while we were there(2 hour drive). We also went to Hershey for a day(1 hour drive). We went to see Moses at the Sight and Sound theatre in Strasburg (highly recommend this). It's worth driving to different places and having this beautiful place to come home to in the evening. We would love to come back one day!!
It's too bad that only 5 stars can be given...Dawn deserves at least 20! From the moment we arrived, we felt comfortable, relaxed, and at home. The location is absolutely beautiful, and the gardens are even more stunning than in the pictures. The apartment is a lovely and homey space with everything one could possibly need and was impeccably clean. In addition to comfort and convenience, Dawn went above and beyond to ensure that my Mom and I had a wonderful girls' weekend away. The "small" personal touches that Dawn added made us feel special and truly valued. From her touches of providing a fresh fruit basket to including fresh flowers in every room, Dawn most definitely possesses the gift of hospitality. We can't wait to return! Thank you again, Dawn!
Ths apartment was perfect! From the moment we arrived thw owners, Dawn and Herb, were so welcoming and willing to make our stay enjoyable. The apartment was clean and well apointed. Our favorite part of the stay was the beautiful garden that greats you as you enter and exit the apartment. Just beautiful!

Dawn is very warm and friendly and has thoughtfully provided everything a guest could want to have a comfortable and relaxing stay.Everything was wonderful and the garden was incredibly beautiful. The garden is a labor of love that Dawn and her family created over a 10 year period.I can't say enough about what an oasis it is.We can't wait to return to Fernwood Garden!
