Barra de Navidad is located on the Costa Alegre midway between Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta. It's a picturesque, friendly little fishing town built on a sandbar that extends into the Bahia de Navidad. For swimming and water sports, you can choose between the calm waters of the lagoon, the beach on the bay, or one of the spectacular neighboring beaches. At the far end of the Bahia de Navidad is the bustling town Melaque. Barra is a 25 minute drive from Manzanillo International Airport, two hours from Colima and 3 hours by ETN or Primera Plus Bus lines from Puerto Vallarta.
Many of the cobblestone streets are open to pedestrians only and the town is easily explored on foot. Across the bay, accessible by road or water-taxi, on Isla de Navidad, is the 5 star Grand Bay Hotel, with a marina and a world class golf course. Barra abounds in good restaurants, great sport fishing, excursions, and a wide variety of water sports including surfing. We have breathtaking sunsets, a tremendous variety of birds and we are blessed with warm, delightful people and amazing weather.
The house, named Casa Eden, is a spacious, well equipped, comfortable two-storey family home located on a quiet street close to the beautiful 4 km beach. British Columbia, Canada is where we call home. For some time now we've found Mexico to be an ideal vacation get away. After visiting Barra it was clear this on of the best vacation spots in Mexico!
The Owner purchased this house in 2010
Barra is close to the airport yet it does not have the crowds some of the other vacation cities in Mexico.
There is a large number of restaurants. The 3 km beach is amazing and the local residents are friendly.
The weather always seems to be ideal and the people are some of the friendliest people we have met. There are many inexpensive restaurants with delicious food. Our property is one block away from a small local grocery store where we buy our bread, vegetable, vegetables and eggs. We buy our bacon, chicken and meat at the local butcher two blocks away?
I had a wonderful stay at Casa Eden. The pool was a bonus and the price was certainly right. Arrangements to get the key to the casa was seamless.
This was an absolutely stress free stay and I will not hesitate to return or/and recommend to friends.
We have just returned from two gorgeous weeks in Barra de Navidad at Casa Eden. The home is spacious and comfortable, close to everything, and the owner was exceptionally helpful and prompt when I emailed with questions.
Located on a side street just before the entrance to Barra, Casa Eden is a short walk from the beach, from a 24-hour store, from the all-important beer deposito, and from the best pollo asado ever. Frequent bus service to Melaque, Chihuatlan, and La Manzanilla is available on the main route just a block away from the house, and on Thursdays the market is practically outside the front door.
The food in Barra and Melaque is great, and very inexpensive. Check out Mexico Lindo for a great view, Loco Loco for pizza, Ramon's for the best salsa and fresh fish. The Sunset bar (a bit tricky to find -- across the intersection from the church) has excellent pina coladas.
If you are heading to Melaque, take the bus (6 pesos) or a taxi (50 pesos). Check out the Albatros bar on the beach or La Campasina just inland (say "hi" to Howard) or Scooby's for ribs and BBQ. With Barra as your home base you can take day trips to many gorgeous beaches: La Manzanilla for body surfing and Cuestocomante for snorkeling were our favourites.
Although we spent most of our time out and about, we were always happy to come home to Casa Eden. My kids loved the pool, I enjoyed the sunny backyard, and we all enjoyed BBQ night. One thing to keep in mind about Mexico, though, is that the street noise is very different than it is in Canada. Be prepared for roosters crowing and dogs barking, and expect to hear the water truck's horn and the ice-cream-truck song of the Global Gas seller. What you won't hear are ambulances, fire trucks, and car alarms, hooray! But do not underestimate how different the night noise is in Mexico -- the prudent traveler will bring earplugs.
We had a bit of a tricky time finding the house on our way in -- if you get to the big fish you have gone too far! Double back and take the secondary road east of the main road. Look for the street sign on the telephone pole!
Thanks for a great stay in your home. Adios for now.
My husband and I stayed at Casa Eden, in Barra de Navidad, with my sister and brother-in-law in July 2011. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Casa Eden is a warm and welcoming home. It is extremely comfortable with loads of space for relaxing and reading as well as socializing, playing cards and listening to music. Each morning we enjoyed having our coffee on the upstairs balcony overlooking the pool. Then we enjoyed a delicious breakfast of local fruit, bread, eggs and bacon by the pool. In the evenings we ate fresh fish, chicken or meat we bought at the local markets and then barbequed with fresh nugget potatoes and little onions. Delicious! My husband had the best time looking for and cooking with the local ingredients, sauces and spices. It was a fun experience to go two blocks over to the barrio and do our shopping at our favourite little grocery store. Pelayo Proveedo has fresh fruits, veggies, cheese, milk, wine, candies and canned and packaged goods. We also bought our meat from the carneceria (butcher) on the same street. Their bacon was the best bacon we’ve ever had. The local people are friendly, patient and helpful while you practice your Spanish. They in turn enjoy practicing their English. Casa Eden is a very clean, quiet and well-equipped property. The pool area is private and the pool is wonderful for cooling off and swimming in while sipping on margaritas and mojitos! The house is in a central location. It is an easy to walk to the little town of Barra as well as to the neighboring town of Melaque. We enjoyed a three-minute boat ride over to The Grand Bay Hotel where we enjoyed lunch....and delicous coffee. It was also easy to catch the local bus at the end of the street. It was a five-minute walk to the ETN bus station where we took the bus to Guadalajara. We thoroughly enjoyed the bus trip to Manzanillo Centro where we walked to the top of the hill and had a spectacular view of all of Manzanillo. Barra de Navidad now has a special place in our hearts and it is the Mexico that all travelers should experience. We will definitely be going back to Casa Eden and staying for a longer period of time.
Great house, but like most of Mexico take your earplugs, lots of barking dogs in the neighbourhood & you always have to be on ant detail, mostly in the kitchen. House could use laundry facilities, lounge chairs for the pool area & is really lacking in the pots & pan department in the kitchen. House is slightly overpriced for the area, & there is no view of the ocean.. Owner & Realtors very nice & helpful..We enjoyed our stay...
