Fox Ridge is a secluded, 40 acre property for experiencing a retreat from the world with giant redwoods and no houses in view. Seldom a car passes by. As you travel the 4 mile, well maintained dirt road to get to the house, you pass by two small, beautiful vineyards and fantastic houses tucked away in the trees. This is an area where people cherish their privacy… a rare commodity these days. This is what Fox Ridge is all about. We are close to 1,000 ft. elevation which means the temperature is usually 10 - 15 degrees warmer than the 55 degrees when the fog is in at the coast. And when it is hot in the valley to east, we are 10 degrees cooler because of the sea breezes giving us beautiful weather most of the time.
Our two story, 2000 sq. ft. house, sitting on top of Brushy Ridge, among other 40 acre properties, has two master bedrooms with king beds and large picture windows. One bedroom has a balcony. There is a third smaller bedroom with a trundle bed (2 singles). There is a large bath with shower with a half bath downstairs. The downstairs has a large open living/dining and kitchen area with sliding glass doors opening to a 600 sq. ft. deck overlooking the rolling hills and valley of redwoods, pines, fir and oaks. We also have a backup generator which comes on automatically in case of power outage.
You can hike around on the trails of our land at your leisure and experience the serenity of nature undisturbed. There is excellent mushroom hunting and you may catch a glimpse of deer and fox. Or play Petanque (like Bocce Ball) out on the meadow. Or simply sit on the spacious deck or lie in the hammock and read to you heart’s content. Better yet, take a leisurely nap under the redwoods, listening to nothing but the birds singing and the wind blowing through the trees. This is also the perfect place for those of you who love to write or practice yoga. There is plenty of space indoors or on the deck. We also have a massage table. As you can tell this is truly a place of retreat, relaxation and rejuvenation.
And yet only 20 minutes away are fabulous beaches. Park at one of the many access lots and within a short walking distance you will be at the magnificent Pacific Ocean where you can hike one of the many trails available to the public. To get to the ocean you will have gone through Sea Ranch. It has a golf course which is open to the public. You can also go kayaking on the Gualala River which is just another 10 minutes away. If you need groceries, organic if you prefer, the town of Gualala is only 35 minutes away from Fox Ridge. There are art galleries or enjoy one of the many wonderful restaurants such as St. Orres. Gualala also has a local airport that accepts private plane.
In the evening enjoy one of your favorite beverages out on the deck as you watch another spectacular sunset and don’t be surprised the next morning when you wake up if the valley below is filled with the mysterious fog that quite often sneaks in during the night. Be sure to look at our Photo Gallery – the pictures say it all!

Cynthia & Brad, Owners of Fox Ridge Retreat
We found Fox Ridge in 1997. We were looking for a spacious piece of land with lots of privacy. Our home is in Oakland and, like many of us, we have very busy lives. The first time we saw Fox Ridge it reminded us of a beautiful park where you could stroll around, not only that, it had rugged trails where you could hike. It was a dream come true. We have spent these past years clearing the land, opening up the views to the beauty of the breathtaking sunsets and the fog coming in through the valley. The serenity of the land, with the majesty of the redwoods, always gives us the opportunity to disconnect from our hectic pace and simply rest and enjoy this special place with what is naturally here. We hope if you find yourselves at Fox Ridge you will have a wonderful experience of this magnificent land.
The Owner purchased this house in 1997
This was our second trip to Fox Ridge... we were there in September and loved it so much that we couldn't wait to go back. And everything was just as wonderful and amazing and perfect as we remembered and were hoping for! And once again, we drove through the gate and did not leave the property until it was time to (reluctantly) go home! We had fully intended on visiting Gualala and checking out some of the other surrounding areas, but when it came down to it, we just didn't want to leave. :o) And of course our dog LOVED having such a huge fenced area to run to his heart's content! His safety is our top priority wherever we go, so we TRULY appreciate having so much fenced space for him!
Cynthia continues to be incredible to work with, always available to answer questions! Thank you for sharing the magic of Fox Ridge Retreat!!!
We have stayed at Sea Ranch many times. This property is a little bit farther from the main properties but so worth it. The deck and the views are nothing short of spectacular. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking and the house is very comfortable with view windows everywhere. The pictures definitely were accurate and the quiet was so peaceful.
We forgot to bring DVD's that would be the only suggestion since there is no cable or WIFI,
But we were totally happy without all that too.
We loved the loop hike, about 4 miles, a good workout but not too much.
We didn't feel the need to go anywhere, it was perfect.
Wonderful peaceful location with stunning forest views. Great place for the dog to roam. We thoroughly enjoyed out stay. We have stayed at Sea Ranch near the beach on several occasions and this made a great change. We were fortunate in January to have bright sunny weather with no rain. It had been dry for a while before also. The only caution I have is that there is a 4 mile drive on packed dirt roads. A couple of spots were quite tricky for our minivan. I can imagine this would be very difficult for normal vehicles in bad weather conditions. Hopefully this can be explained a little better in the property description. Maybe the roads survive the weather, i dont know, but they seemed like they would need a 4x4 or off road to me if there has been significant rain.
This is by far the best property my wife and I have ever stayed at. It is truly unbelievable. You are isolated, the view is second to none and if you have dogs, the 3-4 acre fenced area makes it easy to let them explore while you are doing your thing. Such an incredible place. We never go to the same place twice but I could definitely see us coming back to fox ridge.
"Off the beaten path" is the perfect description of Fox Ridge... and we mean that in the VERY best way possible!
We just returned from a BLISSFUL week of total relaxation at this amazing property! If we could have stayed another week... or a month... or a year, LOL, we absolutely would have because we did NOT want to leave!
From the moment you drive through the gate, the calm and quiet and beauty that surrounds you melts your cares away. The views from every window are breathtaking, but nothing tops the view from the deck: WOW!!!! And it's SOOOOOOOO QUIET... we joked all week that it was so quiet it was hurting our ears. ;o)
The furniture is extremely comfy and the kitchen well-stocked with plenty of pots, pans, plates, silverware, etc. We had everything we needed for a week's stay.
We SO enjoyed wandering around the property and loved how there are benches carefully positioned here and there to take in the different views. Having such a HUGE fenced area was absolute heaven for our dog, where he could safely run to his heart's content... he LOVED romping around! We also explored the rest of the property outside of the fence at least once a day, we figured hiking up and down that hill gave us a good excuse to be ridiculously lazy for the rest of the day.
Last, but definitely not least, I can't say enough wonderful things about working with Cynthia on our reservations and plans! She was INCREDIBLE and answered my MANY emails with an endless supply of grace and charm. She's by far the best owner we've ever worked with, we really appreciated her!
We CAN'T WAIT to return!!!!
My partner and I were in search of a peaceful property where our dog could run around and not even realize she was fenced in. We found it at Fox Ridge. Note, there is an adorable blue-eyed neighbor dog that likes to come visit (she apparently can climb fences). She even went on a walk with us along the road.
The deck was amazing: stunning views by day and stargazing by night. The property is lovely and a perfect place to just relax in the hammock. It doesn't take long to get to Gualala and have some beach time, too. There's a great little game store in town that's nice to check out, and we found delicious lunch fare and views at Trinks.
We would love to visit again.
