House, 6 Bedrooms + Library, 5 Baths, (Sleeps 20)

Dwelling at Ponderosa is a spectacular 4000 square foot vacation home located in beautiful Idyllwild, Ca. The house is perfect for weekend getaways, retreats or family reunions. Sleeps 19-25 with the most amazing views imaginable!!

The owner is an architect and the home was meticulously designed with keen attention to both aesthetics and function. This home provides a visual experience and natural setting that has absolutely amazed past guests.

The kitchen is fully equipped with all necessary bowls, pans, griddles and cookware and dining service for 18. Additionally, there are two dishwashers...nice!!

The upper level has a Great Room which includes a dining area that has a table that seats 14-16. There is also a separate library with an ever growing stock of books. (This room also makes a great place for the kid's to play, yet still stay in site. The room has a glass door to view the ruckus yet keep the quiet). Also, the Great Room has a game table and a case of board games and puzzles. But please note, what the house is not stocked with is media. Our desire for this home was to create an environment where people can experience close community and interaction with each other and nature; thus, there is no television, computer, cable, internet, etc. (Cell phone reception is excellent, however).

There is an eight foot glass barn door that opens to the outdoor patio which has a direct view of Lily Rock and creates a lovely indoor/outdoor feel.

The bedroom level is uniquely laid out, where each bedroom has its own sink. In addition to the two suites that have their own bath, there are two showers and and three toilets, all of which are in their own separate rooms. Nobody ever hogs the bathroom in this home!!

Please note that the house is set up on the hill, which provides amazing views and privacy. However, there are 40 steps from the driveway to the house and the site is steep in some areas.

About The Owner

I am an architect and with the help of my wife, designed our dream vacation home. We spent a great deal of time on the aesthetics and details of both the interior and exterior of the home. Our intent was to create a true getaway environment that is quiet and away from the business of everyday life. The look we created is modern, yet rustically elegant.

The Owner purchased this house in 2010
Why The Owner chose Idyllwild

We chose this location because Idyllwild is less than 2 hours from Los Angeles and Orange County. In addition to having a beautiful natural setting, it is a lovely town with lots of fun places to shop and dine.

What makes this house unique

This home is unique insofar that it has been specifically designed to feel intimate like a home yet provide all of the necessities to comfortably sleep large groups. The site is quite steep in some areas which creates fun play and hiking areas. However, there are enough level areas for outdoor relaxing. Additionally, during snow season there is a great sledding hill. Directly outside the Great Room is a small meadow and deer often come to visit and say hello!

What a wonderful place!

We stayed over a weekend in January recently and it was a beautiful house. Everything you could think of in terms of amenities. It's 4 minutes away from town, so you can pick up what you need up there, and it's like being out in the forest. The views are amazing! The kitchen has everything you need, and very nice appliances. Lots of room and lots of space to hike outside. No TV was great. We played board games and sat by the fire. There's a gas grill that's very convenient for cooking as well. The pictures are good, but the house looks even better then they show. I would recommend this house - Tony is a wonderful host and everything is very organized and easy. We'll be coming back!

Wonderful Stay for a Big Group

Tony was very responsive through email and the process was easy and smooth throughout. Take advantage of communicating with him because he is patient and flexible.

His property is the gem of the area. In driving to retreats, I think there is a hope that the property you've selected is the nicest one and Tony's home (I use home instead of house intentionally) passes with flying colors. The photos do not do it justice as there is a rustic warmth and continuity in the flow of the home that cannot be communicated through the pictures. We fit 20 people comfortably and adored the lack of TV and Wifi which enabled the group to enjoy the company of others.

The stay was a unique balance of simplicity and classiness. It was not overly gaudy or luxurious but the character of the home wins you over with the tone of the wood and the largeness of the rooms and ceilings. By no means is it shabby, either. The appliances and bathrooms are modern. My one reservation was looking at the photo of the kitchen and reading another review but I can assure you that the kitchen was more than adequate unless you plan on having all 20 members of your group cooking together.

I'd say the consensus of our group was that it was a steal and we will be back if this place isn't booked to death because it should be :)

Breathtaking Cabin!

My friends and I stayed at this cabin over New Years Eve and cannot say enouch nice things about the cabin and the owners. The layout of the cabin is perfect for a large group, with the social spaces located on the top floor and the living spaces located on the 1st and 2nd. When we arrived, it was snowing heavily (If you drive up while it is snowing or there are icy conditions, I would suggest calling the owner and asking which route has the least steep hills and slopes- one of my friend's car got stuck and we had to get it towed the next morning).
The photos do not do the cabin justice. All of the bed rooms are of good size and very comfortable. The views from the living room area are unbelievable! When we woke the first morning (after the heavy snow storm) everyone's jaws dropped upon entering the third floor- the view was too picturesque for words.
Overall, I would highly recommend this cabin for anyone interested. My friends and I hope to come back in the near future for another relaxing getaway!

WELL WORTH IT!

After seeing the pictures on VRBO I thought the cabin looked clean and modern and rustic (as opposed to some peoples old leftover cabin furniture). When we got there, it was beyond our expectations! The ambiance is a very rustic feel but with new furniture and bedding. It was spacious and easy to cook and entertain 5 families with kids! We were able to get ahold of the owner easily to figure out the heater and he called back immediately. It also had amazing views! We plan on coming back here year after year!

The perfect home for a quiet, relaxing retreat with amazing views!

We had the most amazing weekend retreat at this home- accomplishing our goal of getting away from the noise and daily grind of life.

Our favorite part was the large and comfortable family room- where the large windows and barn doors open up to the incredible view of mountains, trees and natural surroundings. It was surreal to watch the clouds sweep through the area while lounging on the sofa and chairs, in front of the fireplace, with family and friends.

The home is very spacious... and we loved the rustic feel of the furnishings. The dining table is great- very long and accommodating to large groups. It was fun to have our family and friends all able to sit at the same table. The kitchen was also stocked with everything we needed to make meals.

We're not heavily into media- so we welcomed the idea of no TV. Kids enjoyed playing games, hiking and building forts. Accomplished the goal of slowing things down for our family!

The architecture of the home is truly beautiful and one of a kind...

Our experience with owner was also great- very accommodating... The stay exceeded our expectations.

I highly recommend this home for anyone wanting to escape to the mountains for peace and quiet.

We can't wait to come back!
