TWO BED APT IN LARGE PRIVATE HOME ON GROOMED SKI TRAIL

Big Sky Chalet Rental Photos and Description

Chalet, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 5)

Recently purchased and newly fitted out - a partner property to CASA MOONLIGHT (VRBO Listing 374629) and CASA FARELLONES Ski Chalet in the Andes (VRBO Listing #95623)

EASY PAYMENTS - through an arrangement with PAYPAL, we can offer up to 6 months interest free payments on your rental at Casa Big Sky. E-mail us or check our website ( link after Owner Info below) for more details.

Luxurious ski in - out rental home apartment and ski lodge in Big Sky. Full home comforts in a relaxed and spacious ski chalet set in the Rocky Mountains, just one hour drive from Bozeman, Montana.

Located on a warm southern facing slope on the lower slopes of the Big Sky ski area, with panoramic views on three sides, Casa Big Sky is three minutes on skis (on groomed ski trail passing right through our property) from the White Otter lift which accesses the Big Sky base area and the mountain beyond. You can ski back to just below Casa Big Sky from both Big Sky and Moonlight basin ski areas - or take the Cascade lift and then approach the home directly from behind.

Skiing and boarding are the main winter activities. There is ample lift serviced terrain in the 2 resorts, but if you feel the need to venture further, various back country options are available.

Summer activities in Big Sky fall into two main categories. Those organised by the resort, including Lone Peak Expeditions, Adventure Zip-line Tours, Climbing Walls etc and those to be found in the greater South West Montana area including Fishing and Rafting on the Gallatin, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Golf and of course all that Yellowstone Park ( nearest boundary - half an hour away) and West Yellowstone (just over an hour away) have to offer.

Casa Big Sky is a recently built two story private chalet with total built area of approximately 4,000 square feet set in the Cascade subdivision of the Mountain Village of Big Sky , commanding panoramic and unobstructed views of Lone Peak and the Big Sky and Moonlight Basin Ski Area.

The owners, who divide their time between Chile, Thailand and Montana, use the upper floor primarily during the ski season. The lower floor, which can be closed off from the main house as a self contained apartment, is available for rent at most times of the year.

Getting around the mountains (winter)

There are two primary ski areas in the immediate vicinity of Casa Big Sky (Big Sky and Moonlight Basin - now combined into one super resort - the largest in the USA). Connected to Big Sky, there is also a third ski resort, the Yellowstone Club - but this is a private facility and access there is by invitation only.

Big Sky ski area - can be directly accessed from Casa Big Sky. Put your skis on at the front door, take a diagonal traverse across the garden, and pick up on the groomed trail that runs right through the property and will take you down to the Cascade and While Otter ski lifts (about 3 minutes on skis). You can ride this lift in the morning without a ticket if you tell the lifty that you are heading to the ticket office at Big Sky. White Otter takes you across the back of the resort area and drops you just above the Big Sky base area - where the main lifts such as Swift Bear, Ram Charger and Explorer take you up to the Lone Peak and Andesite ski areas.

The other lift close by the house, Cascade is really only a real estate access lift - that you may chose to use when you return to Casa Big Sky, if you want to avoid the three minute walk on the more direct access.

You can return directly to Casa Big Sky from the top of Swift Bear, anywhere on Lone Peak or Challenger - or if you have crossed over to Moonlight, from the top of Six Shooter or Iron Horse.

There are several options on the route home, the two quickest end up at the Rising Bull Trail down to Rising Bull, which you will reach about 250 meters from Casa Big Sky. From there you will have to leave the groomed trail and walk (some do it with skis) the short distance up to the house.

A longer route which involves taking one more lift (Cascade) allows you to approach the home from behind on the ski trail that leads right though our property without the need to walk.

You will find detailed descriptions of these routes in the house - and I would encourage you to discuss the options directly with me when you are here.

If you are a complete ski novice, or are at a very low level of fitness, you might find the relatively gently ski trails (not ski pistes) that access Casa Big Sky more than you are comfortable with. If this proves the case, I recommend taking a three minute drive to the Moonlight Lodge or the deserted Pony Express lift car park (ten steps from car to lift) and starting your day there. You then have the added bonus of taking in some Après Ski in the excellent Moonlight Lodge.

Moonlight Basin - interconnects with Big Sky - and can also be accessed by a three minute drive - either up to the main Moonlight Lodge (a really good place for lunch or Après Ski) or from the Madison Lodge (there is a much larger parking area here) - just over the shoulder of the mountain.

Wonderful Experience at Casa Big Sky

Our experience at Casa Big Sky was fantastic. William is a wonderful host and made our trip to Big Sky very enjoyable. The home is located conveniently between the Big Sky and Moonlight ski resorts. The apartment is very well equipped with cooking utensils, spices and other kitchen supplies. The beds were very comfortable with nice soft linens. We really enjoyed the use of the private hot tub after a long day of skiing. I would highly recommend staying at Casa Big Sky it was a wonderful experience for our group of three ski enthusiasts.

Thanks,

Nicole

My wife (Thai) and I (British) are semi retired and now divide our time between homes in Phuket, Thailand (our previous home/business base) and now, chasing the snow, in Big Sky Montana and Farellones, Chile.

The Owner purchased this chalet in 2009

Quite simply Big Sky is the best, largest and least crowded lift serviced skiing in north America. We had been visiting (and renting) for extended stays for 5 years - and then in late 2009 found prices had become affordable, so purchased. The house is primarily for my wife and I, but when we do not have friends and family visiting, or when we are not in residence, we like to defray operation costs by renting the spaces we are not using.

The space and the peace and quiet. Free roaming wildlife - foxes, elk, moose and the occasional bear are our closest neighbors. Yet all this is within ski access (or 3 minutes drive) of two significant resorts.

Montana Magic @ Casa Big Sky

  • 5 of 5
Everyone who has fallen in love with Montana (or are about to) will find all of the qualities that make it so special at Casa Big Sky. This gorgeous mountain chalet features some of the finest Montana materials, with incredible wood cabinets and trim, slate floors, high end fixtures and appliances. I loved the hand painted tiles with Montana scenes in the bathroom. It's nestled in an alpine garden with a stunning view of Lone Peak. The first morning we awoke to two deer standing in the meadow outside the window. You are surrounded by nature and pampered by luxury in this place. There is a sweet stereo set-up for your Ipod, a fully equipped kitchen, a cozy fireplace and that sweet scent of pine and sage that only Montana has. Big Sky is still a small charming village with a Farmer's Market on Wed. from 5-8 that you don't want to miss. The food, crafts and music were so much fun. Several times a week there's live music in the park that's also excellent. The food at the Riverhouse which is right on the Gallatin River serves up great BBQ with breathtaking views. Bring a variety of clothes, the temps were dramatically different in Bozeman than in Big Sky and even Yellowstone. The days were hot and the nights were cool. The nightly hot tub should relax you no matter what you choose to do during the day and we always looked forward to coming back to Casa Big Sky. If you get the chance-- drive the Beartooth Highway, it's nothing short of spectacular. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to enjoy this lovely place. And don't forget to look up here...the stars are something to behold-- and very close.

Owner's Response: Dave, I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed Casa Big Sky and Montana in the Summer. It is indeed a great if very different time of the year to visit. I just wished I found more time to get over there in the summer as well as the winter.

Beautiful area

  • 5 of 5
My family of 4 (including my 2 teenage sons), stayed in the unit. It was exactly as described. Everything was very clean, very nice & very comfortable. The scenery was beautiful. We explored the area - Yellowstone, Nevada City, Bozeman, went hiking, whitewater rafting, & biking. There is so much to do in the area. The weather was perfect, cool in the evening & very comfortable in the day.

While Big Sky is best renowned for it's skiing in the winter, it's often overlooked that it also a phenomenal area to visit in the summer. I am glad to hear that you were spoiled with the choice of things to do.

Top of the Line Apt

  • 4 of 5
We had a wonderful time staying in Big Sky the 1st week of Feb. It was bitter cold (-30s) which was unusual as this is our 5th time there. The apt was very well furnished, between the bedding, kitchen and furniture, we couldn't have asked for anything else. It was even equipped with champagne flutes, which was perfect, as we were celebrating our 36th anniversary and our daughter's boyfriend proposed to her on this trip so we toasted the night away! I appreciated the artwork, which wasn't the usual rental property pictures of snow and mountains, but some actual art. Having the garage for the car was a real plus as it snowed a lot and we would have had to scrape all of that off every morning. The hot tub was convenient - no walking through hotel lobbies or around pool areas. Just step outside and jump in. Ahhh! The other really nice thing about the apt is that there were extra condiments left from previous visitors. In many other places, the cleaning crew doesn't even leave salt and pepper, but there was salad dressing, mustard, mayo, ketchup, etc.
We have usually stayed in Big Sky and this was our 1st time to use Moonlight Basin to any extent and it was very nice. It worked out well as many of the upper lifts and gondola didn't run due to the extreme weather, so we could use Moonlight.
Now, the only thing that was a problem for us was the ski in and out part. My husband has bad knees and likes to come back to rest and eat lunch at the condo. This proved to be a problem with this property. The description was pretty accurate, but we do not consider walking up 250 yards to be a ski-in. A ski-out, yes, but not a ski-in. We adjusted our plans somewhat and that was fine, but want to caution about the ski-in if you like to pop in at lunch or to retrieve equipment.
Now, that being said, we have used vrbo a number of times throughout the States and overseas, and you WILL NOT find a more accommodating owner than William. There is nothing that poses a problem for him that he cannot respond to and get fixed. VRBO charged a cleaning deposit when they shouldn't have and rather than tell us to work it out with them, he refunded the deposit and he will address the issue with vrbo. William does have other properties in Moonlight Basin and after checking on them, they would have suited our needs better as they are directly on the Iron Horse lift. They sleep more people, so I didn't look at them, but if the ski-in part worries you, try them.

Owner's Response: Ann, many thanks for posting these comments as an addition and clarification to the comments your husband Russel posted earlier. Providing some balance was appreciated. I do agree that for someone with a bad knee that one of our other properties in Saddle Ridge would have been better. The key advantage of Casa Big Sky over a condo right on the slopes is however the space and privacy. This comes at a small cost of accessibility. But to clarify (what is stated in our listings and other information packages) you can reach the house directly on skis without walking, by taking one additional ski lift. Most people, myself included, however choose to take the shorter and quicker route home and make the final two minute, 250 yard walk along the gently uphill sloping road, to get home.

BEST VACATION EVER!

  • 5 of 5
Casa Big Sky was the perfect place for our Big Sky getaway! Everything was so nice-from the stylish décor to how comfortable the beds & pillows were to sleep on-we couldn't have been happier! William was very informative and gracious and made our stay quite memorable. One of the things we loved was being secluded and away from all of the noise and chaos. Sitting in the private hot tub while the snow was falling and taking in all of the breathtaking views was just what we needed. Having the convenience of skiing right to the lifts to start your day is a joy. Skiing back is a little longer, but it still beats dealing with carting all of your gear back and forth everyday to the mountain...that's just a hassle and you can have that! If you want privacy, quiet and relaxation and an overall great place to stay at Big Sky - this is your place! We didn't want to leave!!

Not a ski in and out

  • 2 of 5
We stayed here 8 days last week. Skiing great and Yellowstone perfect. Two comments. First:this is NOT a ski in and out condo. Saying so is DECEPTIVE. We tried to ski back to this condo. 90 minutes of HELL. Long walks up hill on icy asphalt roads,TERRIBLE/BAD/DON'T TRY. Worst part of of trip by far. I felt lied to. Skiing out is hard to do also, but not as horrible. Second:This is NOT a true two bedroom condo. We had two adult couples, but one bedroom has no doors or privacy. More like one bedroom and a kids place in the den.

Owner's Response: Ann and Russell, I am sorry to hear that you felt that you had a bad time with the ski in and out access. I wish you had mentioned this to me on the several times that we spoke during your trip, so I could have discussed it with you , because it was indeed a huge problem the week that you stayed - caused by two factors - firstly temperatures that were running an exceptional 25 to 30 below (at which temperatures skis no longer glide on gentle trails) and exacerbated, as I found out when I filed a complaint with the resort about poor grooming, that the (sub) contractor who does the grooming on that trail had had an equipment failure (also cold weather related).
I do sincerely apologies for the problem that you had and can assure you that since my complaint and with warmer ( still sub zero) weather, skiing home has once again been a pretty easy matter. It takes me about 7 minutes from the top of either Six Shooter or Swift Current.
There are several options for routes home (which you should have seen in the guest directory in the apartment) and some of the easier / quicker ones are not always easy to find. I would encourage all our guests to discuss this directly with me so I can explain it in person - since the groomed trail that does indeed run right through our garden, (that I noticed you were using) is not necessarily the quickest way home.
The bedroom configuration is clearly show on the floor plan on the VRBO listing and our own more detailed website. I would agree that the second bedroom is better suited to kids - but that has not prevented lots of couples staying and enjoying it for short vacation ski trips.
