Vallecito means “little valley”, and, as the name suggests, the village of Vallecito is nestled between two mountain ridges on the shores of Vallecito Lake. Vallecito has several eateries and small stores. The Pine (Piños) and Vallecito Rivers flow from the Weminuche Wilderness into Vallecito Lake.
The mountain and lake scenery is stunning. Grimes Creek and the Vallecito River are ¼ mile away from the house, and Vallecito Lake is a 1/2 mile to the south. Great fishing can be found at the lake, Pine (Pinos) River & Vallecito River, as well as many local streams. Access to the lake is free and open to recreation of all types. You can even rent a pontoon boat & fishing gear at one of the two local Marinas. Fishing is excellent with many game fish including Trout, Salmon, and Northern Pike.
If four-wheeling is your thing, there are miles & miles of off road trails to explore. You will find even more miles of hiking trails following our two rivers into the San Juan National Forest and the Weminuche Wilderness with over 2.5 million acres of public lands with many 13,000+ and 14,000+ peaks that you can explore.
Ride the '1880's' Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, or visit Mesa Verde Anasazi Ruins, visit Silverton’s Mining Town, or soak in the healing hot water in Pagosa Springs, shop or see a movie in historic Durango. Enjoy a day in the quaint town of Ouray, America’s Little Switzerland, or spend a relaxing summer evening at the Bar-D Chuckwagon supper and show. There are excellent golf courses, numerous museums and of course... the scenic million dollar highway.
There are just as many winter activities such as Snowmobiling, Cross-Country Skiing, Snowshoeing Downhill/Alpine/Nordic Skiing or a Dinner Sleigh Ride at Durango Mountain Resort (Purgatory) and nearby ski areas. The house is not “ski-in/ski-out”. The house is about 1 hour from Durango Mountain Resort and 1 ½ hours from Wolf Creek Ski Resort.
We think our mountain home is a peaceful refuge from our busy world. We’re sure you’ll agree!

We honeymooned in the Durango area 20 years ago and have been in love with the area every since. Our three kids love the mountains year round, too. We enjoy the winters with skiing and snowboarding by day and puzzles, hot chocolate and roaring fires by night! The summers are spent hiking, biking and enjoying the beauty of the mountains as much as possible!
When we started looking for vacation homes in the area, this is the first house we looked at and it was love at first sight! The house has unique charm and character. In addition, the setting is so picturesque! Waking up to the beautiful mountains is an awesome way to start the day. We love that the hiking trails, rivers and lake are so close.
Staying here is peaceful and relaxing. The place doesn't feel like a rental - it feels like home. It is the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of today's busy world!
We thoroughly enjoyed our vacation, and the house was absolutely amazing!! We will definitely be back next year!!
It was only two couples, so there was abundant space in this home. That's a good thing - with two living areas, there were plenty of places for four adults to nap:)
The kitchen was as large as mine at home and had every tool and appliance necessary to cook fabulous meals. We were there five nights and only ate out once. The guys cooked on the outside grill every night for dinner.
The beds were super comfy. We slept with the windows open and enjoyed the cool weather. We were even happy and surprised to see coat hangers in the closet:)
The upstairs shower is what I want in my home - took pictures to show a contractor one day.
Plenty of storage in every room of the house. Loved all the antique furniture.
While inside was perfect, we spent most of our time outside the home. Whether sipping wine out front under a blanket at night looking at the stars or sitting on the back deck listening to music and studying 'how to fly fish' books, it was all a vacation should be. We didn't turn the TV on the entire stay.
We saw many cottontails, chipmunks and deer. There was evidence of a bear - he got into someone's garbage and brought it to our yard to eat - but sadly, we never saw him.
We enjoyed our walks to the creek and around the 'neighborhood'.
We fished off the bank of Vallecito Lake one day. Rented a boat called Trout Slayer and fished in the lake another day. Don't forget to get your CO fishing license! We spent a day driving to Ouray and back. Stopped for several photo ops, had lunch and celebrated surviving the Million Dollar Highway:)
We got to meet the caretaker. She was super nice. We had to call her our first morning about the bear picnic:)
If you want to escape, relax and savor beautiful scenery, choose this home.
Where does one begin? We really did feel completely at home, comfortable and cozy the moment we walked in the door! The setting is peaceful from the view of the mountains out your master bedroom window to the front and back porch settings. Our coffee in the morning and our meals in the evening, would often be joined by deer. I love to cook and was not disappointed by my kitchen pickiness. It was stocked with everything you would ever need ....even a crock pot for those busy days out adventure seeking. The beds were comfortable, the wifi was great, the entertainment for my kids indoors was fabulous. They have a huge selection of movies, books and games. We liked having two different living areas as well, one for the kids to watch movies and one for the adults to relax. The decor, by the way, is impeccable.
The surrounding area is loaded with things to do. We would ride our ATVs a short distance to a beautifully babbling creek or go a little further to Vallecito Lake, just stunning. We fished, swam, went tubing, the choices there were amazing. Another couple miles down the road, we road 11 miles up a mountain on our ATVs to breathtaking views and incredible trails.
The caretaker and the owner went above and beyond to make sure our stay was everything WE wanted it to be. This property really has it all. Heck, I even loved the large mudroom you can walk right into to drop off all your dirties.
We will be back! Very highly recommended!
My family stayed at the Serenity home and we couldn't ask for a nicer place. As always, we were hoping for a good rental but boy were we surprised! The house was gorgeous, inside and out. It was furnished beyond our expectations. Everything you could think of was furnished in the kitchen. It was decorated beyond our expectations. The beds were very comfortable and the living rooms were very relaxing and inviting. My favorite part was the back porch with its awesome tables and chairs. The owners were very informative & friendly. If you choose the Serenity home, be prepared as you will not want to leave! The house and grounds were very peaceful. My family hopes to return to this awesome house! Thank you for the awesome time and memories! Keep up the good work!
I saw the house pop up on the dates I was looking for and fell in love with it immediately, I sent a email to the owners and was contacted within a few minutes about the dates I had inquired about, made my reservations and received directions to the "T" of how to get to the house, when my party of 9 arrived we were all amazed that this is a rental it is gorgeous and I would make my percent home, it's very cozy and has the warm home feeling not like a typical cabin that your iffy about staying in! The house has everything you need just bring your clothes and tooth brush! It's very quit and in a perfect setting we took our RZRs with us and left right from the house the owner gave us some ideas of were to go and they were perfect and our kids loved it the whole time from the deer in the yard at night and morning it was a experience that my family won't soon forget!!! We look forward to staying again in the near future! Thank you Cameron
The property looks exactly like the pictures which is to say extremely nice. The views from the property were spectacular! Unfortunately for us the weather was somewhat unseasonably cold for the time of year we went so fishing was too cold on the lake. The restaurants (the owner provided recommendations) that were still open for business in the Fall were very good. We suspect that the summertime in Vallecito is a fun and happening place! Our only challenge with the property was not quite enough bathrooms for our family of six. We prefer at least 2 1/2 baths.
