Located ON the harbor in South Freeport you’ll find the quintessential “Downeast” Maine experience usually found much further north and the most unique property on the coast of Maine! Overlooking the picturesque Harraseeket River and Casco Bay, the Harraseeket Boathouse originally built in 1813, is the oldest documented structure in South Freeport. Its colorful history includes use by “rum runners” during prohibition. The Harraseeket Boathouse guest cottage is now available as a luxury rental.
Rented in August, 2014...lovely spot, easy access, parking and very comfortable. Beautiful views from inside and out. Youth regatta at the next-door yacht club was entertaining. The only cons were the tiny shower (my slim, athletic 10-year-old mentioned it straightaway) and half of the burners on the stove didn't work - we cook. We didn't have the pleasure of meeting the owners as everything was done with key codes, but they were very easy to work with. We would come back.
We stayed in the Heron cottage in August of 2011 and absolutely loved it. It is located right over the water (no kidding) and the view is to die for. We woke up each morning, had our coffee on the deck (our own private deck) and enjoyed watching the boats going and coming. The cottage was small but we knew that when we rented it. It was furnished beautifully - nothing fancy but high end furniture. There is also another small cottage next door and a large cottage also that the owners own. Speaking of the owners, they were a joy to deal with. Got in touch quickly to my questions, sent rental agreement amd all pertinent information regarding driving instructions, keys to cottage, manager's telephone numbers, etc. it was our first trip to Maine but it will not be our last. We love it there and we loved our cottage location. There is a lobster house within walking distance but we bought fresh lobsters at the market and cooked them at the cottage and ate them while looking out over the harbour. Magnificent!! I would highly recommend this lovely place, although I hesitate to because I am afraid it will not be available when we want to return and we will return. August was a beautiful time of the year to visit Maine, not too hot or too cold. Enjoy YOUR visit at this cozy little cottage with amazing views!,
Less than 30 minutes from Portland's airport, South Freeport is an idylic waterfront setting...It's picturesque setting is reminiscent of yesteryear and typical of the 'Downeast' Maine experience, only found much further north. Next door to Freeport, home of LL Bean's flagship store and many exclusive outlet stores, you'll also enjoy the active restaurant scene and numerous community activities. Our area truly embodies the state's saying 'Maine...The way life should be!'
