Overview

Old San Juan Apartment Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, sleeps 5

This apartment is unique! This amazing artsy loft is in a historic building. The loft is on street level. No carrying luggage up a steep flight of stairs or walking down some dark corridor to reach it. 20 ft. high ceilings and marble floors in the lower level. Hard wood stairs (comfortable to climb, not too steep) lead you to the second level where the beautifully designed kitchen, the dining area and bedrooms are located. All hard wood floor on the second level. An original mural by artist Sofia Maldonado adorns the hallway. Stunning contemporary art pieces on all the walls.

The spacious master bedroom has a queen size bed. The second room has two twin beds and a small futon. In total we can accomodate 5 people. Most apartments in Old San Juan have just one bathroom. Ours has 1 1/2 bathrooms. Full bathroom on the first floor and 1/2 bathroom on the second. Quiet, comfortable, spacious, a/c in all areas. Condominium has two interior patios in common areas. This apartment is very elegant! You will live a luxurious vacation if you stay in the Artsy Loft.

You can easily walk all Old San Juan and dine at the most renowned restaurants, visit the forts and see the most spectacular views of the San Juan Bay and Atlantic Ocean. Starbucks, Old Harbor Brewery, local bars, the most lively 'plazas' are one and two blocks away. Long walk (with Atlantic Ocean View) to Escambron beach, Condado and Miramar or take the bus or a cab! Taxi and bus stand are a block away. Visit Old Sand Juan and experience the Old City in the most extraordinary artsy setting!!

About Lourdes or Sofia

I love Old San Juan. It is like a small village full of charm, history and wonderful people! You haven't been to Puerto Rico if you don't stay in Old San Juan.

Lourdes or Sofia purchased this apartment in 2009

Why Lourdes or Sofia chose Old San Juan

We needed a lot of imagination when we bought this loft! We had to rebuild it from scratch. But that is the fun of it! Today, it is nowhere near what it was then. The restauration took over a year. But we knew it was going to be unique! And it is!! Marble and hard wood floors, exquisite contemporary art, all new appliances. It is the Artsy Loft! Unique in Old San Juan.

What makes this apartment unique

It is situated in one of the best streets in San Juan, close to all the great restaurants and hotels. Completely repaved, Tetuan Street goes from the Teatro Tapia up to la Capilla del Cristo. It is a wonderful promenade. It is also close to the port and the beautiful Paseo La Princesa. Walking distance from taxi stand, bus stop and parking lots. What more could I ask for!

Guestbook comments from the manager

With some improvements, this could be perfect!

  • 3 of 5

I waited about a month to write this review of the Artsy Loft to give myself time to tease out my overall impression and really pinpoint what mattered to me in the end. The Artsy Loft is almost the perfect place to stay, but it definitely has its quirks and areas of improvement.

Let's start with the good...

PROS

- Location is the biggest pro. The Artsy Loft is in the middle of the action, close to restaurants, shops, Castillo de San Cristobal, taxis, etc.

- It's on the quiet part of Calle Tetuan. This was perfect because my mom is in her 60s and has mobility issues.

- The trip to San Juan was a girls trip, and never did we feel unsafe in the area around the Artsy Loft.

- The loft is spacious and private.

- The beds are comfortable.

- The landlord, Lourdes, is responsive and helpful. The taxi driver dropped us off at the wrong place ~ 4 blocks away (beware!), and Lourdes sent her daughter to find us and lead us to the Artsy Loft.

- Security deposit is only $100 because of a minimal rental insurance fee. The refund for the security deposit was also fairly quick.

Now the bad which I think are relatively minor upkeep issues...

CONS

- Pillow cases and sheets had yellow spots

- Water temperature in the shower is inconsistent: hot to cold to very hot to very cold and so on

- Door knobs in the master bedroom and main bathroom were falling off

- Very little shelf space in the main bathroom and no shelf space in the upstairs bathroom

- Very dim lighting

- Shower curtain was yellow with thick layer of soap scum, and shower curtain rings were rusty

- Upstairs bathroom is so tiny and also located in the kitchen which is odd

- Small TV (but really, who spends their time watching TV in San Juan?)

- There was a used cup and party favors from New Year's Eve left on a shelf in the living room

- No soap in the upstairs bathroom

- Located behind a row of restaurants so some noise issues from waitstaff or garbage trucks

- Decor is badly put together, and furniture is either quite old or new but cheaply made

- Some of the displayed artwork is not appropriate for children (i.e., scantily clad zombie, several pictures with breasts exposed, and a man hanging)

I can look past most of the cons like lack of shelf space and "wow" factor. However, cleanliness is not something I can overlook -- especially the stained linens and murky shower. If minor improvements were made, I would probably stay at the Artsy Loft again just for its location and Lourdes' helpfulness.

Owner's Response: I thank you for your review and kind words about me and my daughter. I will certainly consider your comments. As of now, I will have all sheets and pillow cases checked to identify those that need to be thrown out. We do this periodically and have all sheets, towels and curtains changed. Supplies as a bar of soap, liquid soap, dishwashing liquid and toilet paper are provided. The water heater is new and nobody had mentioned this situation. I will have a plumber check it. Doorknobs in both bathrooms were fixed. I didn’t know about the bedroom one. But, definitely will have it fixed. Both bathrooms are small, I know. This is an historic building over 150 years old. Sometimes the layout of these Spanish apartments seems “awkward” but there is not much we can do about that. It’s like when you travel to Europe. The older buildings sometimes have the bathroom in the hallway! Some of the fun of traveling and staying in the Old City is precisely this…living in a different way… All areas are thoroughly cleaned between guests. However, sometimes we leave souvenirs, as we do in our home, of special dates, like New Year’s Eve. Art is a special language. We collect art from young Puerto Rican artists like Sofia Maldonado, Omar Velazquez and La Pandilla. Sofia Maldonado studied in Pratt Institute in NY and exhibits internationally. Her art can be controversial and we love it. Check it out: www.sofiamaldonado.com Omar Velazquez is finishing his MFA at the Chicago Art Institute. The “hanging man” is one of a series of art pieces that he created for the Circa Art Fare. It is called a Bacalao and represents a man whose life is being controlled by outer factors. That is why he is held down by clothes pins that prevent him from moving freely. We are very lucky to have this art piece. We ask our guests to get in touch with us if they need anything during their stay. We gladly provide it. We live right here in Old San Juan and, just as my daughter ran down to help you find your way when you arrived, if you had called us about any of this we would have gladly provided supplies or sheets and towels for you. We want our guests to feel good and enjoy every minute of their stay. Hope you will come back soon. We will make sure everything is impeccable. Lourdes

Great time at a great place in Old San Juan

  • 5 of 5

Artsy loft is the perfect place to stay at Old San Juan. We have been staying here for the last 3 years for the San Sebastian Festival. Is is right in the culinary center of Sofo and walking distance to all those great restaurants. Highly recommended and definitely will be back next year.

What a splendid vacation!

  • 5 of 5

What a splendid vacation! The apartment is clean, comfortable and well maintained. My daughter, her husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our 8-day stay. It was the perfect location for long walks near the port or a late coffee or a Pina colada on the small square half a block away. A 5 minute walk would take us to great restaurants, either for Puerto Rican food at El Jibarito or for a sumptuous White Bean soup at Marmelade. We would pick up the free trolley a block away to El Moro then walk down the ramparts or the colorful streets of Old San Juan. The apartment fully met our expectations .The high ceiling, the fans and the artwork made the living room a joy to relax in after our long daily walks. Even though the “Artist loft “ is right on Calle Tetuan, the street is quiet and none of the festive pre-Christmas noise would reach our two bedrooms upstairs. We only wished we had screens in the upstairs windows, so we could at times open them to the quiet inner courtyards and turn off the air conditioners. Lourdes was very helpful throughout our stay which was definitely too short. We strongly recommend the Artsy loft. And as the song says : “un dia volveré…..a soñar otra vez…en mi viejo San Juan”. We will return again.

Awesome stay in el viejo San Juan

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable, roomy,

Beautiful. And the best thing about this loft is that it's so close to everything. We kept our rental car in doña fela parking even though it was more expensive , but it was close, accessible always and safe. We were pleasantly surprised, since usually the pics are nicer than the place but it was exactly as depicted in the website.

Great location, clean, cozy, & fun!

  • 4 of 5

The Artsy Loft was clean and comfortable...with great/easy access to Old San Juan. The listing description had it right for locale, layout, amenities. Lourdes provided excellent customer service. I would recommend this location to other travelers who want the experience of living there, rather than just being a typical tourist. This includes all the late-night activity (BTW, be ready for the loud restaurant staff nearby cleaning late at night and prepping early in the morning) to the morning/daytime activity at area cafes, restaurants, bars, etc. While we felt safe in the Loft, we think the front windows on the doors that face the street could use more secure materials--rather than just the wooden shutters/blinds. We thoroughly enjoyed renting bicycles and touring around at our own pace the sights of Old San Juan and (modern) San Juan and its beaches. We took a day trip with a small tour (total of 6 people) to the El Yunque Rainforest using a small company that had great/personalized service called Bespoke Lifestyle Management. Each night we were so thrilled to return to our cozy Arsty Loft, make our own dinner and mojitos when we were feeling up to it, and just unwind in a relaxing environment...our home for a week. Te quiero, Viejo San Juan!

The lost was roomy and was in a great location

The loft was roomy and was in a great location. We are 4-2 adults and 2 children. It was close to restaurants and evening performances on the square. We enjoyed ourselves!
