Skipping Christmas - Surfing in Rincon
First off, be sure to get out of San Juan before 3 PM in the afternoon. The traffic getting to Rincon is a bear. Set aside 2 1/2 - 3 hours. A car or van for your stay is a must.
This description of this property was very accurate. It is in a gated complex with a very short walk to the beach. The bedrooms are downstairs, kitchen and living room on the first floor and a great open air room upstairs. There were a few minor items that needed fixing so I purcahsed a few tools (<$10) Marlenis, the owner was very accommodating and was willing to help, but it was Christmas and way easier for me to just take care of this. Overall, the property was very clean and in good shape. One pet peeve is that the gate to the villa required a remote control. With six of us in our party, it would have been nice to have a second remote. I would rate our overall experience at the property just shy of excellent.
The Rincon area is very attuned to surfing. The waves were gigantic the week we were there; 20-25 foot faces. Too big for many expert surfers. Think North Shore tow in Laird Hamilton movie size waves. Really. Imagine waiting for a swell to calm down? We did by touring around a bit. Coolest mini trip was to waterfalls at San Sebastian. No opportunities to snorkel because of the rough surf and high tides.
To a person, I cannot tell you how nice the people in Rincon are. Locals, ex pat US guys and girls, store owners, waiters/waitresses, bartenders, owners...everybody was very friendly and always helpful.
Dining is not cheap in Rincon but it is overall very good. Look at it as the price of a good meal in a smaller US city.
Breakfast - make your own most days, but you have to go to the English Rose at least once. Excellent. Breakfast for 4 with tip was $ 50, beautiful setting, great staff, wonderful choices. (real bacon)
Dinner - there are many diverse choices; take your time by going out to happy hour first. Most of the bars have different deals on different days. Anything with rum in it is always good.
Favorite meals;
Lazy Parrot - outstanding fish; dinner for 6 with tip $ 250
Villa Confresi - eat outside, informal or inside, quieter, dinner for 6 with tip $ 230; good steaks
Pool Bar - sushi in Rincon, very good
Rock Bottom - burgers, sandwiches all good; surf bar. younger group went back a 2nd time
Calypso - fish tacos, drink specials, nice view
Tamboo - drink, dont eat
