Getting There: Travel Options & Distances.: For non-pilots, Bangor is the closest commercial airport (1.75 hrs) while Portland is also convenient (~3 hours), offers many more flights that are less expensive. Travel to/from Portland is 2/3rd on the Interstate (95/295). You should also consider Manchester, NH (4.5 hrs, served by Southwest) or Boston (5 to 5.5 hrs by car). Greenville is approximately 1 hour North of I-95 (via Newport exit). Driving from NYC (~9 hours), you can bypass Boston using I-495.
Bring your passport, GPS & Camera: Greenville is approximately 3.5 hours from Quebec City--a charming place old-world city to consider for an overnight get-away side trip. Likewise, you can visit the Maine coast--but in all honestly you should take advantage of the Maine mountains, lakes and woods that surround you! Much of central and northern Maine is owned by natural resource companies, such as Plum Creek Timber (PCL), or has been placed into ecological conservatorship. However, it is largely accessible to public, although a GPS and in some places a 4 X 4 is helpful (if not recommended). Wildlife abounds in this part of the country, be on the look out for deer, moose, beaver, fox and coyotes--not to mention a large variety of birds and other creatures. Must see and easily accessible: Mount Kineo (2 mile hike from Rockwood).
Mountain Lake Resort & Recreation area for family and sports-persons located in the heart of Maine on Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in all of New England! Spring and summer fun on the lake where you can fish, boat, jet ski, kayak, canoe, sail and take seaplane rides. Local hikes, four wheeling, moose watching, trout fishing and hunting can be undertaken in various seasons. In winter check out nearby Big Moose Mtn Ski resort, or strike out on your snowmobile, cross-country skis or snow shoes in the local environs, Lilly Bay or Baxter State Park. Pilots can take advantage of Greenville Municipal Airport (~5 miles away). Don't miss the annual Seaplane Fly-In and competition, held the first weekend following Labor Day every September, where you'll see numerous rare and exotic planes. Fall is hunting season for fowl, deer, bear and moose (by permit/lottery) for spectacular leaf watching. Spectacular sunsets and available from the East side of Lake Moosehead and especially Blair Hill.
Other Activities: Moose and Leaf watching
Golf: This condo property is located on Moosehead lake with its own 9-hole golf course featuring spectacular views. The course is open to the general public, but is under-utilized and has very modest greens fees ($25), which includes a cart (if available).
Ski: Big Moose (a.k.a.) Big Squaw Mountain ski resort is just 3 miles north of the condo and offers a tremendous bargain for skiing and snowboarding. 2009-2010 weekend lift tickets were only $25/day and complete rental packages only $30. The slopes overlook Moosehead Lake and offer numerous vistas of remote Maine Mountains (including Kineo and Big Spencer, among others). On a clear day you can see all the way into Canada!
