Single level California ranch home overlooking our private meadow surrounded by forest and a massive oak tree. The comfortable bungalow style interior with chef's kitchen and open floor plan is ideal for a family retreat or two couples exploring the coast. The master suite contains its own freestanding gas fireplace, a huge new deck with spa, and oversized stone shower. Two bedrooms have comfortable queen beds; the third is small containing an oversized chair that pulls-out to a single bed but this room works best as a den, walk in closet, or small child’s room. The hidden garden, protected by tall deer fence, is planted with fresh vegetables of the season, herbs, and fruit. The meditation area, with fountain runs off a solar panel. End the day under a blanket of stars in the middle of the field with an outdoor living room built of Santa-Fe slate and the tops of redwood trees. There is a fire pit to melt desert. Swimming pool passes at the Trout Farm Inn are available.

View our family album on the linked YouTube slide show and then us help you find the hidden paths around Santa Cruz and the San Lorenzo Valley. Our family enjoys the central coast region and has for more than a century. When at work, we are a university professor teaching architectual history, and a maritime-historian, but our heart belongs to the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Lolly and Lindley purchased this house in 1978
We chose this property 35 years ago, partly because of the open flat sunny meadow surrounded by forests with distant mountain views and partly because the geology is as varied in each direction as the potential activities nearby. The Oak Tree on this property speaks for it self, it is AMAZING, as are the birds who come to rest.
Once in the house you may not want to leave but the redwood forests, beaches, and cities of San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel, San Jose, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale are all with in reach; but we are FREE of traffic, noise, and grime. The fully refurbished club pool is a mile away, a little further is a great community lake where you purchase a fishing license and rent small fishing craft, or canoes.
Now you have the chance to enjoy our hard work great neighbors, trails, and access to every thing on the central coast including the zip line at Mt Herman as you move from platform to platform through the tree top canopy. Ben Lomond Bungalow, in Santa Cruz Mountains is place that defines California Central Coast living at its best and the line between indoor and outdoor living spaces dissolve.
On the mountain, two miles from our country retreat is a venue for quality music at the Don Quixote's Interntational Music Hall.
The rich and varied history of the region is recognized as one of the most significant biological treasures in the state of California, the Zyante Sandhills Zone support a unique community of plants and animals found only in Santa Cruz County.
Behind the property you will find Quail Hollow Ranch, an equestrian park first developed by the founders of Sunset Magazine as their weekend home. The trails around the ranch will lead you past a pond, year round streams and a host of wildlife. The sunset trail leads to a panorama vista.
We are close to many state parks and the redwood trees beaches and fun and creative shopping areas; however, if you are not able to escape leave work, satellite conference rooms and office space is available within two miles.
2010-07-17 "(5 out of 5) This is a great home in a wonderful area. Everything you need is there including a fully equipped kitchen! Big yard with beautiful views. There are tons of outdoor activities to do, including a one of a kind zip line through the Redwoods at Mt. Hermon. Our family definitely enjoyed our 3 month stay in Ben Lomond."
Tucked away on a nature preserve between the hustle and bustle of the high tech industries of Silicon Valley on San Francisco Bay to the east, and the pounding surf of Monterey Bay to the west, this vacation rental is in a perfect location for an unforgettable experience. As I drive through the preserve, to Santa Cruz I love seeing deer and horses grazing in the green meadows, and beautiful cherry blossoms along the way. The house is very clean, generously equipped and well organized. The huge yard/meadow and fresh vegetable garden are beyond anything I ever expected. The hot tub, and seating area in the meadow are incredible. I feel very relaxed here and hate to leave. My husband and I definitely want to return.
We discovered a hidden treasure, tucked away on a nature preserve, less than ten miles from the beaches of Santa Cruz, and less than three miles from Henry Cowell Redwood State Park. In particular we appreciated the magnificent spreading oak tree next to the house, that sheltered numerous chickadees and squirrels. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you could possibly need, and it was a bonus to be able to pick fresh salad greens from the garden for dinner. We enjoyed visiting with friends on the patio near the open fire pit, in the center of a huge lush green meadow, followed by a soak in the hot tub fully equipped with jets and a beautiful waterfall. It was a pleasure to watch numerous deer graze in the nearby meadow and we shouldn’t have been surprised later to see a coyote trot across the field the next morning. Hiking the Sunset Trail provided great exercise over interesting terrain. (The trail head was less than one-half mile from the house.) The owners were easy to work with and provided immediate feedback. We will definitely return!
Great house in a great location. There were 5 adults and 2 toddlers in our group and we all fit in well. We liked the hiking trails that you can walk to in the Quail Hollow Ranch and the kids loved the steam engine ride through the redwoods. We spent 9 days there and they were all filled with fun. One special treat was the neighbors goats who we visited frequently. Mary who has the goats also brought us 2 dozen fresh laid eggs. In addition the house has a world class kitchen. What could be better.
Having stayed several times in the past year at this lovely home in Ben Lomond we look forward to yet again another 3 weeks in December. Aside from the responsiveness of the owners who are always available and helpful, this peaceful and quiet centrally located home allows us time to visit with family in Santa Cruz, have guests over for meals and fun in the magical valley that is the yard; as well as affords us the time to work on our business in this home equipped for our computers and electronic needs.
The property is always well maintained and clean when we arrive, which is very important to us. The kitchen is large and has all that is needed for preparing a huge meal for many. Comfortable and cozy on the inside, yet expansive with beautiful views and decks to take advantage of the surrounding nature on the outside, true relaxation is made easy.
Our dogs, grandchildren, children, their friends and we have all enjoyed many fun and treasured moments at this house over the past year. Not only do we look forward to our return trips, they all do too. No matter what the season, there is much to do and so many attractions and places to go that are so close.
We are looking forward to coming this December and cutting down our Christmas tree with our children at one of the close tree farms, and enjoying the winter season for the month.
The 4 of us stayed 9 days. Have to comment on the super comfortable beds, so soft you want to sleep in every morning. Kitchen has quality finishes with very nice dishes, utensils and the best of pots and pans. We loved cooking and eating in our little bungalow. Super nice quiet neighborhood with lots of wild life to see in the meadow and grounds. Loved opening the windows to listen to all the different sounds of the life around us. Surprised at the warm sun on our cheeks while the cool breezes whipped around us in the outdoor patio rocking chairs. Had fun letting our 2 dogs visit the neighbors goats to sniff them couple times each day.
The Live Oak Tree, just amazing! While cooking and sipping a glass of wine you can discover this tree from both the kitchen sink and the living room and never get tired of its beauty.
My husband did not want to leave, he loved everything about this amazing place. Yes it is about 10 minutes from Santa Cruz but worth it. Felton is a neat little town about 5 minutes drive with a lot to offer without the crowds.
We made some day trips to Big Sir and Carmel which were also amazing but could not wait to get back to our little paradise at Ben Lomond Bungalow.
Looking forward to a return visit here soon.
What a wonderful house I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet place in the hills within reasonable driving distance to the beach.
Looking forward to renting again☝
