2010-07-17 "(5 out of 5) This is a great home in a wonderful area. Everything you need is there including a fully equipped kitchen! Big yard with beautiful views. There are tons of outdoor activities to do, including a one of a kind zip line through the Redwoods at Mt. Hermon. Our family definitely enjoyed our 3 month stay in Ben Lomond."

Lindley is the professor of ancient architecture and Lolly manages a ship plan collection for a national museum. We both love history, and learning about the world around us. Ben Lomond Bungalow is the place we come to dream and rejuvenate. Four generations have worked side by side on this property to call it our special home. Take a look at the youtube video to see photos of my ancestors enjoying the beach and the mountains during the early 1900's

Lindley and Lolly purchased this house in 1978

Not more than an hours drive to San Francisco Bay Area, Monterey, and San Jose/ Silicon Valley, but only ten miles to the heart of Santa Cruz and the central coast beaches. As part of a nature preserve we enjoy the sun, our private meadow with its wildlife at our backdoor. Upon arrival most people marvel at the exquisite ancient oak tree with its 10,000 square foot canopy. Seasonal creeks run through our woods.

End the night under the magic of the stars in the lovely meadow room gathered around the fire pit. Enjoy the herbs and produce planted in our enclosed garden that you pick fresh for your self.

Peaceful retreat - close to beaches, hiking, and shopping

  • 3 of 5
We were in the Santa Cruz area to attend our daughter's wedding. The location of this home was perfect. Felton is just a few minutes down the road. It has a great organic grocery store. Additionally, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park features dozens of grazing deer in the evenings. We enjoyed hiking in the Redwoods, and then watching the fawns play in the meadows. The beaches are about 30 minutes away. We highly recommend Manresa beach in Watsonville.

Our family loved the outdoor area at the house; it was very peaceful. The trees are magnificent! There was plenty of outdoor furniture to relax on. Inside the house we enjoyed the large kitchen, watching movies together in the evenings, and the plush bath towels. Having access to a nice washer and dryer was also a nice feature.

Unfortunately, we were disappointed by a few things in this rental... 1) I had to spend almost an hour trying to vacuum hair off the livingroom furniture and carpet. Not a fun way to begin a vacation. 2) It was hard to prepare an oven meal - no big baking dishes for oven cooking. 3) We were never able to find barbeque utensils, thus had to skip grilling our food. If we had found them, we would have had to first clean the BBQ - it was quite dirty. 4) The two queen beds were comfortable, but the pullout couch and blowup mattress were not. After the second night my son decided not to bother with the blowup mattress anymore. It loses air throughout the night. The hide-a-way bed in the living room is only comfortable with another mattress on top of it. Luckily there was a folding cushion in the back bedroom closet that my daughter was able to put on top of the hide-a-way bed. The house really only sleeps 4 comfortably - and that would be two to a bed. 5) There is only one stand-up shower. The second bathroom has a tub with a hand-held shower. This would have been fine for bathing children, but there were 5 of us adults in the house.

Despite all these issues, I would recommend this home for 4 people. Just be prepared to share the two queen beds and the one stand-up shower. I really wouldn't recommend trying to use any of the other beds.

Owner's Response: We are glad that you loved our area and setting. Yes the meadow and patio is a fantastic setting for family reunions and kids to run around. Three days to be in a new home as the mother of the bride with all you have to do is a short time to get to know much about our home. We could have told you that the baking dishes were in the drawer under the over and where to find the barbecue utensils. In any case we did purchase a new set in a case so they are easier to find. There are two grills, one gas and one charcoal. In addition to the slower cooker, the pressure cooker, microwave and electric grill we have several different kind of coffee makers. Martha our housekeeper takes pride in her work and is cherished by almost all our guests. On occasion something can slip through the crack as she has a whole house to clean and inventory in between guests. Usually she is fastidious in wiping down the high quality leather sofa and vacuuming the grass rug. We welcome calls to let us know if something is not right so we can make it so. We are glad to report the quarterly deep clean is completed and recent guests are once again raving about the wonderful house. In addition to our stone shower with bench, I love taking a long soak in the bathtub with the handheld shower unrestricted by shower tracks and glass. Soon a hot tub will be added to the brand new bedroom deck along with a Sri Lankan style garden shower. The defective air mattress was removed so no one else confuses it with the new mattress but the limit of guests is 8 under the terms of our permit for vacation rental. We hope the wedding was a great success. Best of luck you you and your family.

Bungalow at Ben Lomond

  • 5 of 5
We have just got back from a week in the Ben Lomond bungalow (May 15-22). We caught the end of a terrible heat wave that hit all of California (99 degrees on our first day), but then things cooled down to a lovely low-70s temperature. The house is very attractive, an old ranch house that used to be home at various times in the past to horses, chickens, goats and dogs, etc. Owl houses are going in on the property this summer. There is a firepit (which we couldn’t use during our visit because of the California fire danger) where we had drinks and hors d’oeuvres in the evening, listening to the birds. Cloudless skies at night gave us spectacular views of the heavens. There is also a fine vegetable and herb garden.

The house was well equipped with high-end utilities; a pretty living room, sort of Craftsman style; and two bedrooms, two baths, and a bunk room for storing our luggage (a children’s room at other times). The amazing thing about the house was its quietude. We were on a cul-de-sac and only cars of the other owners came along the road. The area hasn’t quite emerged from the old homestead period, for there were cocks crowing, and horses in some of the corrals. The house is eight minutes from Safeway in Felton, a very easy drive. Nearby you have the Redwood Grove Park, and, just minutes from the house, the Quail Hollow Ranch County Park, with easy trails and pretty views that used to be owned by the founders of Sunset Magazine.

The owners were wonderfully helpful and welcomed any calls we might make. We will certainly return next year if we can.

Owner's Response: Suzie it was so much fun to help you prepare for your upcoming trip. Your enthusiasm for the house and property are much appreciated. The thoughtful approach you took to understand the property before during and after the booking process is not unnoticed. It was a delight to share our special retreat with your and your friends. Upcoming in November is the Santa Cruz Film Festival, A collection of independent films from from all over the world screen in the beautiful Del Mar and Rio theaters. Parties, filmmaker Q&A and lots of fun!

Beautiful retreat

  • 5 of 5
We literally just got back to the east coast, but couldn't resist leaving an excellent review for Lolly's rental in Ben lomond. We had everything we could possibly need to have family and friends come visit and the beautiful meadow was such fun to explore with the kids. I enjoyed cooking with her herb garden and it made us feel like this was a second home. We will certainly use this as our retreat when we come visit friends and family in the near future again.

Peaceful and lovely retreat.

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I just returned from a lovely "birthday" weekend at Lolly and Lindley's cozy mountain retreat. We had a nice family gathering and everyone loved the place. So now we are looking at the calendar to book another stay there. The house itself has a fully stocked kitchen to cook to your hearts content, there is a terrific grocery store-Ben Lomond Market- a couple of miles away that has everything you need to make those wonderful meals. The beds were very comfy so we ended up sleeping in. Since the evening time was a bit chilly we turned on the heaters which heated the house very well. All in all it was a wonderful stay, Lolly and Lindley are very kind and accommodating.
