Ben Lomond Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Indoor and Outdoor Living spaces of this single level ranch home will amaze you

Ben Lomond Bungalow marries romance and adventure in grand style. Big Sur and San Francisco and all the all the treasures between (Monterey, Carmel, Point Lobos, Franklin Point, Pigeon Point, Los Gatos, Santa Cruz, Capitola, and Saratoga) are available as day trips from this central location.

This single level California ranch home is relatively secluded but an easy drive to both town and the beaches. We overlook our own private meadow, surrounded by forest.

Many of the windows look into the branches of a massive oak tree. The comfortable bungalow style interior combined with the renovated chef's kitchen and open floor plan is ideal for a family retreat, stocked with all essential housewares and linens.

The master suite contains its own freestanding gas fireplace, a huge new deck with spa, and oversized stone shower. Two bedrooms have comfortable queen-size beds; the third is small containing an oversized chair that pulls-out to a single bed which works well as a den, walk-in closet, or small child’s room.

Enhanced with WiFi and Xfinity cable and smart TV, you will be connected!

The hidden garden, protected by tall deer fence, is planted with fresh vegetables of the season, herbs, and fruit. The meditation area, with fountain running off its very own solar panel, yes, its quite Zen!

End the day under a blanket of stars in the middle of the field with an outdoor living room built of Santa-Fe slate and the tops of redwood trees. There is a fire pit to melt desert. Or better yet, relax under the stars in the hot tub extended to the deck surrounding the house!

Off street parking is ample, with a long driveway along the house.

When its time to get active take a dip at the near by Trout Farm Inn where swimming passes are available, or take a stroll of the Sunset Trail at the Quail Hollow Ranch Park / Nature Preserve, just a few steps away.

Roaring Camp Railroad hosting the 'Santa Cruz County Light Train' and the 'Santa Cruz Holiday Tree Walk' is found with two miles of our home. The 'Lighted Boat Parade' sponsored by the 'Santa Cruz Yacht Club' features 50 beautifully- decorated power and sailboats parading throughout the 'Santa Cruz Harbor. Charter boats are available.

The world famous Santa Cruz Wharf and Beach Boardwalk, and the fabulous West Cliff Drive are found within 10 miles of our bungalow.

'Elephant Seals at Ano Nuevo' arrive every winter to mate and give birth to the next generation. Visit 'Natural Bridges' State Park to watch the Monarch Butterflies form a 'city in the trees' from mid-October to February of each year. Currently the 'California Gray Whale Migration' can be viewed from shore or from one of the charter boats at the wharf or harbor. #SantaCruzVacationRental, #BenLomond #VacationRental, #FeltonVacationRental, #ScottsValleyVacationRental.

About Lolly and Lindley

View our family album on the linked YouTube slide show and then let us help you find the hidden paths around Santa Cruz and the San Lorenzo Valley. When at work, we are a university professor teaching architectual history, and a maritime-historian, but our heart belongs to the Santa Cruz Mountains. Our family enjoys the central coast region and has for more than a century.

Lolly and Lindley purchased this cottage in 1978

Why Lolly and Lindley chose Ben Lomond

Now you have the chance to enjoy our hard work great neighbors, trails, and access to every thing on the central coast including the zip line at Mt Herman as you move from platform to platform through the tree top canopy. Ben Lomond Bungalow, in Santa Cruz Mountains is place that defines California Central Coast living at its best and the line between indoor and outdoor living spaces dissolve.

The Oak Tree on this property speaks for it self, it is AMAZING, as are the birds who come to rest. We chose this property 35 years ago, partly because of the open flat sunny meadow surrounded by forests with distant mountain views and partly because the geology is as varied in each direction as the potential activities nearby.

Once in the house you may not want to leave but the redwood forests, beaches, and cities of San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel, San Jose, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale are all with in reach; but we are FREE of traffic, noise, and grime. The fully refurbished club pool is a mile away, a little further is a great community lake where you purchase a fishing license and rent small fishing craft, or canoes.

On the mountain, two miles from our country retreat is a venue for quality music at the Don Quixote's Interntational Music Hall.

What makes this cottage unique

The rich and varied history of the region is recognized as one of the most significant biological treasures in the state of California, the Zyante Sandhills Zone support a unique community of plants and animals found only in Santa Cruz County.

Behind the property you will find Quail Hollow Ranch, an equestrian park first developed by the founders of Sunset Magazine as their weekend home. The trails around the ranch will lead you past a pond, year round streams and a host of wildlife. The sunset trail leads to a panorama vista.

We are close to many state parks and the redwood trees beaches and fun and creative shopping areas; however, if you are not able to escape leave work, satellite conference rooms and office space is available within two miles.

Guestbook comments from the owner

2010-07-17 "(5 out of 5) This is a great home in a wonderful area. Everything you need is there including a fully equipped kitchen! Big yard with beautiful views. There are tons of outdoor activities to do, including a one of a kind zip line through the Redwoods at Mt. Hermon. Our family definitely enjoyed our 3 month stay in Ben Lomond."

A Great Alternative to the Beach

  • 5 of 5

It all starts with the location. As active seniors we have always loved the mountains and countryside better than an oceanside experience. By choosing this wonderful home in a new area to us, we could have both. The various beachside communities were a short drive away for exploring when we wanted; but we could return to the peaceful beauty of our retreat. The neighborhood is off the beaten path and quite private and quiet. The neighbors we met were very friendly including the sweet resident dog across the street. Ben Lomond proper (a mile or less away) has a great gourmet grocery, and traditional grocers are nearby in Felton and Scotts Valley. We loved hiking in Henry Cowell Redwood State Park on several occasions; and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the mountain area and backroads over Pinot Paradise weekend visiting several interesting wineries and tasting yummy pinots. Quail Hollow was off limits for us hiking-wise, as dogs are not permitted (equestrian/pedestrian); but it is basically within walking distance from the home and appeared to have some great ridge trails. Now for the home itself. What a perfect place. As others have stated, it has everything you could desire inside and out. It is bright and airy, quality comfortable furnishings and bed, a super gas fireplace in the living area, a gorgeous kitchen with anything we could ever desire (including a Keurig), another gas fireplace in master (which came in handy in early morning hours), wifi, flat-screen tv, even flameless candles. Beautiful grounds. Over the five days we spent time in each outside space. The deck off the living room was just right for morning breakfast. Enjoyed feeding the birds from tray on ledge. The large deck off the master complete with comfy sofa was our go-to spot for most late afternoon cocktails. We spent a wonderful evening sitting by the firepit below in the meadow, and a serene afternoon interlude by the Buddha and fountain. We are so grateful that our dog, Sadie, could share this experience also. She loved playing chuckit in the meadow and resting on the deck afterward, always hoping for squirrel sightings. We took advantage of the vegetable garden savoring a lovely salad with fresh lettuce and herbs. This home is among the best we have ever rented. The owner Lolly was very helpful and friendly, providing many useful ideas for our daily outings. We would highly recommend this home and will definitely be returning - hopefully soon!

Owner's Response: Marilyn and Matt, I am finding it difficult to add to you thoughtful review. Your enthusiasm for the area and our home is appreciated, because we do want our guests to have a wonderful time, and go home with a little of the love that we hold for the area. For people considering upcoming plans, here are just a few local events to welcome you to the GATEWAY TO THE MONTEREY BAY NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY. *June 27, 2015 Woodies on the Wharf  features more than 200 stylish, pre-1952 wood-bodied cars. Admission is free! Music, woodie goodies and prize drawings will add to the fun. Plus, free bike valet is available. *Wednesday nights from April to October, local sailors get out during the early evening to compete and have fun. Join in on the Chardonnay II, Pacific Yachting. This is an event that packs the harbor with visitor spectators. The harbor's restaurants and beach are especially good viewing areas. Bring your camera or video camera, and beach blanket, and spend a delightful evening watching the sails parade in their full glory against the setting sun. 5:30 pm *Free Water Taxi Memorial Day through Labor Day Park in the north harbor metered spaces and take the water taxi throughout the harbor. Weekends and Holidays, 11 am - 6 pm, and during the Crow's Nest's Thursday night beach barbecues. The ride is FREE! We have a few weeks available for April, May, and June and then in September and October... but do not wait to long... these dates will sell out. It is not to early to book for the holidays and next summer.

So Near And Yet So Far

  • 5 of 5

Tucked away on a nature preserve between the hustle and bustle of the high tech industries of Silicon Valley on San Francisco Bay to the east, and the pounding surf of Monterey Bay to the west, this vacation rental is in a perfect location for an unforgettable experience. As I drive through the preserve, to Santa Cruz I love seeing deer and horses grazing in the green meadows, and beautiful cherry blossoms along the way. The house is very clean, generously equipped and well organized. The huge yard/meadow and fresh vegetable garden are beyond anything I ever expected. The hot tub, and seating area in the meadow are incredible. I feel very relaxed here and hate to leave. My husband and I definitely want to return.

Owner's Response: Nana, you have discovered our secret. The is the perfect place to reunite with friends and family. Like you other grandparents find Ben Lomond Bungalow the perfect place to spend time getting to know their younger family members in a private environment. There are birds, squirrels, and deer at hand, farm animals next door; children's programs at the park; and a dizzying list of fun activities near by. The kitchen garden is maintained for our guests to pick and plant lettuce for dinner if you chose along with fresh herbs and lemons and grapes. The Don Quixote International Music Hall nestled in the Redwood Mountains of Felton (2 miles away) offers frequent family programs as does the Roaring Camp Railroad, and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Bandstand. We only have a few weeks available this summer, but there is opportunity to return this spring, or even reserve for next year. Thanks for staying.

We Definitely Want to Return to This Hidden Treasure!

  • 5 of 5

We discovered a hidden treasure, tucked away on a nature preserve, less than ten miles from the beaches of Santa Cruz, and less than three miles from Henry Cowell Redwood State Park. In particular we appreciated the magnificent spreading oak tree next to the house, that sheltered numerous chickadees and squirrels. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you could possibly need, and it was a bonus to be able to pick fresh salad greens from the garden for dinner. We enjoyed visiting with friends on the patio near the open fire pit, in the center of a huge lush green meadow, followed by a soak in the hot tub fully equipped with jets and a beautiful waterfall. It was a pleasure to watch numerous deer graze in the nearby meadow and we shouldn’t have been surprised later to see a coyote trot across the field the next morning. Hiking the Sunset Trail provided great exercise over interesting terrain. (The trail head was less than one-half mile from the house.) The owners were easy to work with and provided immediate feedback. We will definitely return!

Owner's Response: Liz, Thank you for your comments. The Santa Cruz Mountains are wonderful year round but especially interesting during the Spring when the green grasses in the meadow begin to grow and the animals wander in. We are looking forward to time in the new hot tub ourselves. The raised planters in the veggie garden is a wonderful place to harvest lettuce and herbs with grandkids or even give them a six pack to plant and replenish the supply. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Great house in a great location. There were 5 adults and 2 toddlers in our group and we all fit in well. We liked the hiking trails that you can walk to in the Quail Hollow Ranch and the kids loved the steam engine ride through the redwoods. We spent 9 days there and they were all filled with fun. One special treat was the neighbors goats who we visited frequently. Mary who has the goats also brought us 2 dozen fresh laid eggs. In addition the house has a world class kitchen. What could be better.

Owner's Response: We loved your note a few days ago that said, "Our trip was a grandpa's dream come true." We are so glad that you were able to organize your adult children to gather in our costal mountain playground. You should see what the green meadow looks like in the spring with the wild flowers in bloom.

We Call This Our Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

Having stayed several times in the past year at this lovely home in Ben Lomond we look forward to yet again another 3 weeks in December. Aside from the responsiveness of the owners who are always available and helpful, this peaceful and quiet centrally located home allows us time to visit with family in Santa Cruz, have guests over for meals and fun in the magical valley that is the yard; as well as affords us the time to work on our business in this home equipped for our computers and electronic needs.

The property is always well maintained and clean when we arrive, which is very important to us. The kitchen is large and has all that is needed for preparing a huge meal for many. Comfortable and cozy on the inside, yet expansive with beautiful views and decks to take advantage of the surrounding nature on the outside, true relaxation is made easy.

Our dogs, grandchildren, children, their friends and we have all enjoyed many fun and treasured moments at this house over the past year. Not only do we look forward to our return trips, they all do too. No matter what the season, there is much to do and so many attractions and places to go that are so close.

We are looking forward to coming this December and cutting down our Christmas tree with our children at one of the close tree farms, and enjoying the winter season for the month.

Owner's Response: We are at the property now doing chores, working with the architects to install the newly purchased hot tub. The trip is giving us the chance to return to some favorite watering holes. Last night we visited the Tyrollean Restaurant for Octoberfest to find the food was back to its wonderful glory. All tasted fresh, not overcooked or reheated. Earlier in the week, we enjoyed an early supper on the deck of the crows nest overlooking the boats slipping in and and of the harbor. During happy hour appetizers and well drinks are half off. We are making a mental note to reserve a spot on the Chardony II (schooner) for a bay cruise.

Cozy Classy California Bungalow

  • 5 of 5

The 4 of us stayed 9 days. Have to comment on the super comfortable beds, so soft you want to sleep in every morning. Kitchen has quality finishes with very nice dishes, utensils and the best of pots and pans. We loved cooking and eating in our little bungalow. Super nice quiet neighborhood with lots of wild life to see in the meadow and grounds. Loved opening the windows to listen to all the different sounds of the life around us. Surprised at the warm sun on our cheeks while the cool breezes whipped around us in the outdoor patio rocking chairs. Had fun letting our 2 dogs visit the neighbors goats to sniff them couple times each day.

The Live Oak Tree, just amazing! While cooking and sipping a glass of wine you can discover this tree from both the kitchen sink and the living room and never get tired of its beauty.

My husband did not want to leave, he loved everything about this amazing place. Yes it is about 10 minutes from Santa Cruz but worth it. Felton is a neat little town about 5 minutes drive with a lot to offer without the crowds.

We made some day trips to Big Sir and Carmel which were also amazing but could not wait to get back to our little paradise at Ben Lomond Bungalow.

Looking forward to a return visit here soon.

Owner's Response: Donna, THE HOT TUB IS HERE with its own waterfall. You mention so many of the things we too love about our stay in Ben Lomond. The thing that many people miss is the variety of the experience during the different seasons. Clear crisp skies arrive with the fall along with warmer and clearer Pacific Ocean. Winter rains bring out green green grasses, even more animals, and an abundance of ferns. I love watching big pacific storms from the Santa Cruz Wharf, and the surfing championships at Steamers Lane, or Pleasure Point. Roaring Camp Rail Road continues to offer Chuck Wagon Dinners, Moon lit Dances and trains wondering up the mountain year round. I do hope you come back to see us soon and often.

Only 30 miles from San Jose and Levi Stadium is a different world, magic is here on Ben Lomond Mountain. Located on the central coast between San Fransisco and Carmel nestled in the hills above Monterey Bay are the picturesque historic logging villages of Felton, and Ben Lomond are both within 2 miles of the Ben Lomond Bungalow. Boulder Creek, a great place to visit, a little further up the mountain.

Home of the Roaring Camp Railroad you will find a variety of well loved rail adventures. Select passage on this 19th century steam train through Henry Cowell Park or from the Redwood Forest to the Main Beach Boardwalk; additional seasonal events are offered throughout the year.

A few steps from our backyard is the Sunset Trail from Quail Hollow Ranch Park, a 300-acre historic horse ranch currently a nature preserve and home to a few horses but is also to 15 hiking and equestrian trails.

Drive 10 miles to the heart of Santa Cruz, the Beach Boardwalk and Wharf and the memorable strolls down Pacific Ave, or West Cliff drive.

State Parks surround us, Big Basin State Park, Henry Cowell Redwood State Park, Historic Wilder Ranch State Park, Quail Hollow Ranch Park, UCSC are an easy drive. Go a little further to find Sea Cliff Beach State Park, Elk Horn Slough in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, Point Lobos Nature Preserve, and even Big Sur.

North along Highway One you will discover elephant seals at Ano Nuevo, Davenport, the home of Odwala Juice and Bonny Doon Winery, lighthouses, and many remote isolated beaches, wind surfing, and other unique enterprises

Quick outings might include the 1 mile bike ride to the 19th century Mt. Hermon conference grounds where you may choose to whiz down a zip line (known as the longest on the central coast) through the tree canopy. Or pedal the 2 miles to the picturesque Village of Ben Lomond where the smell of chicken barbecue always wafts from the parking lot of the Ben Lomond Market.

The Mountain Village of Boulder Creek is where you will find the streets found in a number of Hollywood movies because its historic charm is evident along each block, as the quaint shops of artisans, antique dealers, are mixed with the local fabric of the community.

Hiking through Big Basin Redwood Forest is a lifetime memory or visit the Highland Park or the 3 remaining Historic Logging Villages. Henry Cowell Redwood Forest and State Park is home to a centuries old Redwood Grove that features a self-guided nature path. The park has a picnic area above the San Lorenzo River. Anglers fish for steelhead and salmon during the winter (catch and release).

Shop till you drop on the Pacific Avenue Mall and enjoy the street musicians. Folks say the nearby Pasatiempo Golf course, a Alister McKenzie design, is as good as you can get for public (semipro) golf. Golfweek rates it #3 in California.

Rent a fishing boat or Canoe at Loch Lomond (3 miles up the hill) or fish in the San Lorenzo River, off the wharf or ask how to sign up for deep sea fishing in the Pacific Ocean.

The Seymour Marine Discovery Center is part of the Joseph M. Long Marine Laboratory, a research and education facility of the University of California, Santa Cruz just 10 miles away or drive a little further to the Monterey Bay Aquarium,

Follow paths to incredible vistas along coastal edges and high mountain trails that overlook the Monterey Bay and Pacific Ocean. Visit Santa Cruz's 300 historic homes dating from the 1850s through 1930s and its 247 structures of architectural significance that dates from 1930 through 1950.

World class jazz every Monday at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz is open to all ages. Santa Cruz Farmer's Market is every Wednesday located one block off of Pacific Avenue.

Take day trips to explore the California Coast from Big Sur and Carmel-by-the-Sea, to the Golden Gate Bridge and streetcars of San Francisco.

Colleges and university visits are a natural from Ben Lomond Bungalow. UCSC is 12 miles, CSU San Jose and CSU Monterey Bay are about 30 miles, Stanford University is about 40 miles and UC Berkeley is 70 miles.

Visit up to forty-five different Santa Cruz wineries. Winemaker Wednesdays at Shadowbrook Restaurant features 2 to 4 wines from local Wineries in a spectacular river front setting.

Barrel Tasting & Wine Dinner is held at Bonny Doon Vineyard every Thursday where you can glimpse into the winery & cellar. Barrel tasting is followed by a hosted three-course, prix fixe family-style dinner paired with wines of Bonny Doon Vineyard.

The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is recognized as the best seaside park in the world. Friday night bands on the beach are free. But one of the best tiny venues to see great musicians is the nearby Don Quixote’s International Hall of Music, come for dinner and a show. Home will be within two miles.
