LUXURY COTTAGE IN SHELLMAN BLUFF 200 FT FROM THE BORO RIVER

Shellman Bluff Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-6)

Dirt roads lined by 200 year old Oak Trees frame the Captain's Cottage. An elegant three bedroom, two bath coastal cottage only 200 feet from the high bluff which overlooks the Boro and Julienton rivers.

The great room is lavishly decorated with a quaint nautical theme that harkens back to the ol' fishing days of this historical region. All the modern amenities such as wireless internet, large LCD digital televisions with DVD players are available. Many areas in the cottage avail themselves to quiet meditation and reading.

The cottage is located in the old historical village of Shellman Bluff which offers two great local seafood restaurants within walking distance as well as the prestigious Sapelo Hammock golf club. Abundant wildlife and excellent fishing are within walking distance from the cottage.

The beaches of Sapelo Island can be reached by charter boat within 30 minutes or by state ferry in 35 minutes. Many bike paths and hiking trails are near by.

Guestbook comments from the manager
It was absolutely wonderful spending these couple of days in the Captain's Cottage. Everything was so comfortable! We slept in the king bed upstairs and didn't want to get up in the morning.

You have done a fabulous job with the house and it still feels like home.

We will carry the memories of this weekend for years to come. We went to Blackbeard for a hike & picnic. The beauty of that trip will also be in my soul for a long, long time.

WONDERFUL COTTAGE, WONDERFUL LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
The property was everything it appeared to be in photos and more. Shellman Bluff is a wonderful cooky little fishing town with interesting characters who are a lot of fun. Everyone was very friendly and helpful and the food at the nearby restaurants was amazing. Great pet friendly property. Keep in mind there are some neighborhood dogs that come to visit - so if you bring a dog that doesn't play nicely with others, that may be an issue, but all the dogs we encountered were very friendly to people and other dogs. The area is wonderfully located away from hustle and bustle of Savannah, but within an hour of the awesome swimming and fishing on Jekyll, Tybee, and Savannah. For anglers, I would highly recommend using live bait. We caught four fish on Jekyll using mud minnows in the tidal river underneath the bridge leading to Driftwood Beach. Tybee is nice too; however Jekyll had something for everyone and the beach at Tybee was too rough and windy to swim for long. There is a wonderful bait, snack shop at Driftwood Beach at Clam Creek Campground that will set you up with everything you need. There is also a fishing pier, a swim park and numerous beach opportunties, though there were some warnings about high bacteria levels at the Driftwood Beach area. There are no private boat rentals without a captain in Shellman Bluff, but there are some nice pier and land fishing opps in Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge nearby and a public fishing dock on the road leading to Shellman Bluff. The cottage is huge, and with four people on our trip, we had more than ample room to move around. This is south GA so bring plenty of bug spray and flea/tick treat your dogs before you go. We did this per the manager's advice and our dogs were tick free the entire time. The cottage has games, movies, cable, etc. The phone in the cottage will only allow local calls in Shellman Bluff and the cell phone service doesn't kick in until Highway 17, so might want to plan for outside town activities before you come or bring your laptop to gather information. The wifi connection is excellent. The cottage was well appointed with everything you will need - just bring your food and clothes, and you're in for a great vacation.

UNIQUE GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I and another couple rented Captain's Cottage for three days in early April, '11. The home is very well laid out for privacy among couples/friends/families, is tastefully decorated, and has most all amenities that you might need. The neighborhood itself might take some guests aback, but that's what Shellman Bluff is all about----stepping back in time about fifty years. The cottage is very conveniently located and is about 100 yards away from "downtown Shellman Bluff". There are several excellent restaurants nearby----Hunter's Cafe & Speeds Kitchen (both within walking distance), Old School Diner (probably one of the most unusual restaurants you will ever visit---and the food is good), Skipper's and Mudcat Charlie's in Darien, and of course, restaurants in Savannah and St. Simons if you care to drive a bit. There are many attractions near Shellman Bluff----Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge (has a huge Wood Stork rookery), Blackbeard Island NWR (accessed only by boat), historic Darien, Sapelo Island----and in less than an hour you can be in Savannah, St. Simons and Jekyll Island. Our favorite memories: (1) kayaking on the Boro River at sunrise (2) walking for hours at Harris Neck NWR and seeing the wood storks, egrets, alligators and other wildlife (3) getting our hug from Chef Jerome at Old School Diner (4) watching the sunrise from the bench overlooking the river at the end of Pine Harbor Road (bring your camera) (5) meeting and talking with the locals at Hunter's Cafe, just a stroll away from the cottage (good food, good beer). Lin is a great host and she made sure that everything went well during our visit. This is a wonderful place to stay----in a very unique setting.

CAPTAIN'S COTTAGE JAN-FEB 2011

Captain's Cottage Jan-Feb 2011
  • 5 of 5
We have spent seven peaceful weeks in the Captain’s Cottage and can’t imagine a more comfortable house--the comfort created by both the thoughtful layout and the tasteful nautical décor (with a “splash of Irish” reflecting the Scots Irish history of the area). The openness of the downstairs living/dining/kitchen areas makes it easy for people to be doing different things--whether reading, watching TV, cooking, or eating—but still be together in the open space. The upstairs desk/work area with the bench seat (that can also be used as two twin-sized beds, though we did not use it that way) also felt very open and comfortable because of its loft-like feeling with a railing overlooking the high ceiling living room. The large master bedroom, bath, and large walk-in closet upstairs were more than adequate, and (again) felt very “open” and comfortable. The two smaller bedrooms and bathroom downstairs also worked well for the guests who stayed with us.

Additional features that we took advantage of and enjoyed outside of the house were the three acre “dog pasture” (our dog loved it!), the Rogers’ Julienton River dock, and the golf cart that were made available to us by Lin Rogers—who by the way responded immediately to any questions or requests we had. We also had the unexpected pleasure of meeting two of the Atlanta owners of the cottage and of learning more about the house and the area from them. Some highlights of the trip were of course the food, at places like Hunter’s Café (about a half block away); Speed’s Kitchen (a couple of blocks away); the Old School Diner (easy driving distance); the Darien River House, Skipper’s, and the Purple Pickle in Darien (about 25 minutes drive); and the Blackwater Grill on St. Simons Island (about an hour away). We spent the better part of a day on Sapelo Island on a very informative tour conducted by JR Grovner, a direct descendant of slaves brought to Sapelo in the early 1800s to work the plantations. We also participated in a “re-enactment” dinner event at Fort King George in Darien. And we enjoyed doing a lot of walking both close to home and driving up to the Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge nearby.

We cannot imagine a more comfortable place to go for a winter get-away and would highly recommend this rental home to anyone who is interested in a Georgia barrier islands retreat!
