Guestbook comments from the owner
We had a wonderful time here - just wound up being one night. Perfect for two couples. Three of the four of us did the first Levi's Grandfondo in Santa Rosa. Needless to say, the cold pool, hot tub and sauna were all food for the bones and muscles! The view is amazing! We also enjoyed hearing the wind among the trees. A walk through the vineyard is a must. Another great view up above the Merlot & Pinot grapes. If you are lucky - Mitch will let you barrel taste his private stash! Yummy - We loved the Zin he had in a 1/4 barrel. We enjoyed talking with DeAnne and Mitch and hearing their story of how they got here - cheers to them for taking a risk we have all thought about.

We hope to return!

We purchased this property five years ago after searching for more than two years. The entire family felt it was time to perhaps create something for the family. The kids(3) and I also required that it be something that my husband (a business turnaround specialist)loved for a change. He has been a wine fanatic for his entire life. We had a family meeting and agreed that we were all in for the adventure in Wine. For my part, leaving the design painting business was an easier choice since the market was slowing rapidly.

The first year was more work than anyone expected. With 60 acres of land, 25 acres of grapes, two houses, two huge barns and a couple small barns, we had more to do than we could get to. One of our top priorities was to rehab the grandmother’s house on one of the secluded peaks. It was redesigned right from the begining as a vacation rental.

We wanted this place to be a representation of our life. It is filled with furniture and art collected all over the US and the World. It is so peaceful here that it just called out for a spa. We especially like the spa perched on the top of the hill overlooking the valley to the west. Comfort was also high on our list – We think you will agree that it has turned out great and is unique.

The Owner purchased this house in 2007

From the start we were interested in some type of vacation rental or B&B as part of the business. About half of the properties we considered had potential for a vacation rental. Our bigger decision was were to start with the wine business. It is a complex business and very capital intensive. We choice to start with grapes since great wine must start with great fruit.

Sonoma is one of the top wine regions in the world. It is also one of the most beautiful locations in the US. We are privileged to have one of the best views around and we can share this with you.

The bonus of this location is that while we have a peaceful, rural vineyard, we are very centrally located with easy access to Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park and ALL the wine areas.

It really is the best of all worlds.

As our guest you are welcome, and encouraged, to explore the vineyards. Walk, run, picnic or bike, it is a new vista on each of the three peaks on the property.

Many guest are looking forward to sampling the wine region and the wines of Sonoma a second to none. Our central location is excellent for multiple day trips in different directions, all easy to get to.

Napa is 30 mins awasy and San Francisco is 45 mins away and a direct route over the Golden Gate Bridge.

FAMILY HOLIDAY RETREAT

  • 5 of 5
We gathered our family from four states to enjoy Christmas week at this mountain-top retreat. When we arrived, we found the cottage beautifully decorated for the holidays, including two Christmas trees and even holiday china. It was just as the owners had promised – "everything but snow!" Our party consisted of six adults plus our 20-month-old grandson and one of our “grand-dogs”, and the cottage provided comfortable accommodations for all of us. In addition to the fully-equipped kitchen, there were shelves of books, a cupboard full of board games, and HD satellite TV – none of which we needed during our always-sunny stay. Everything was clean and well-maintained, and the owners are attentive but unobtrusive.

The location of the cottage is perfect, with a breath-taking view of the valley below. The vista from the comfy lounge chairs was magnetic, whether looking down on the morning fog in the valley or enjoying the lights of Rohnert Park and beyond in the evening. We found ourselves hurrying back from wine-tasting excursions so as not to miss the sunsets. A short walk up the hill behind the cottage offers a 360-degree view, but even from indoors we were treated to both sunrises and sunsets.

This vineyard is convenient to all the wine country attractions, so in addition to tasting great wines within minutes of the cottage, we found plenty of other things to do. Whether it was watching seals and whales at Point Reyes, hiking among the redwoods, enjoying great brew pubs and restaurants, riding a ¼-scale railroad, shopping and massages in the quaint town of Healdsburg, or simply strolling the rolling hills of the vineyard and taking in the spectacular views from the hot tub, we found activities to amuse three generations. I had been concerned that our grandson might not be sufficiently entertained by the beauty and relaxing tranquility of this spot, but he was delighted by the owners' chickens and friendly dogs, and by having cows and horses as neighbors.

Staying at a vineyard was very educational for us, and the owner threatened to teach us all how to prune grapevines (we were never that bored!). We did enjoy his informative talks on wine-making, and even more the delightful Chardonnay and Pinot Noir made on the property.

We would definitely recommend this property to anyone wishing for a comfortable and tranquil setting with spectacular views, yet close to a variety of wine-country attractions.

OUR PERFECT FALL GETAWAY

  • 4 of 5
My wife, daughter, a close friend of ours, and I all spent a week at this house in November and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Coming from Oregon, the "partly cloudy" weather of Sonoma was not the same "partly cloudy" we were used to; instead, we had lunch outside and drank wine in the afternoon overlooking a specular view south and west out over Rohnert Park and Petaluma and the coastal hills beyond.

The owner of the place - and the vineyard it is in the middle of - Mitch showed us how use the two pellet stoves to keep us warm in the cool fall evenings. They were amazingly easy and produced great heat...I think I'm a convert!

Mitch had just filled the hot tub from his well and heated it for us so we could enjoy jumping in after dark into the steamy tub while overlooking the beautiful lights all up and down the Hwy 101 corridor and above us in the starry sky.

We saw wild turkeys a couple times, many hawks, playful horses from the adjoining property, and a peace and tranquility that we appreciate thoroughly.

While the house itself is not the glassy, modern $3M house that would sit so perfectly on this perfect site, it was comfortable, perfectly clean, and obviously very well cared for by the owners. Note that I was a little nervous when my wife showed me pictures of the house, but, other than wishing it had bigger windows overlooking the view, the exceeded my expectations and met my "princess and the pea" (as my wife says about me) finicky. The decor of the house gives it the feeling that you are staying in a friend's house while they are away - and your friend is thoughtful and imaginative.

The house is at least 3/4 miles from the nearest road - and that road is a small side-road, past the vineyards and on top of hill on what must be one of the best sites in all of the surrounding hills. I felt like we were somewhere in Italy the whole time with the weather, the vineyard, the dry terrain, and our simple little "villa".

Mitch had several highly-discounted Pinot Noirs from his vineyard available of which we enjoyed several bottles...

As I said, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This place is the perfect little secret; it's not the Hilton - so don't set your expectations for that - but, it's clean, comfortable, cozy, and has a multi-million dollar view.

A SLICE OF HEAVEN!

  • 5 of 5
After an extensive search on Home Away we chose Black Knight Vineyard Cottage to celebrate my husband’s 50th birthday weekend with another couple. Came all the way from New Jersey.

The cottage was very clean and fully equipped with everything you needed. The décor is charming and flows with the wine theme. The master bedroom suite was perfect. Crazy comfortable beds too!

I cannot say enough about the views from every side of the house. Must check out the back view in the morning to see the cows on the hill and prepare to sit in the chase lounge in front of house. (It’s magical) The views are all breathtaking, probably the best in Sonoma. After each day of outings we ended up in the hot tub with a glass of wine…. We will definitely be back!

MOST RELAXING VACATION!

  • 5 of 5
We recently stayed at this wonderful rental for a long weekend of rest, relaxation and wine tours! We arrived late at night and awoke the next morning to the breath-taking views and fog melting away from the valley. Instantly we were hooked! The house was very clean and comfortable and had everything you need to relax, including a perfectly positioned spa overlooking the valley and mountains- which we found was the perfect spot for an evening glass of wine as the sun set. The owners were very friendly, and their very sweet dogs joined us on a walk through the vineyard one morning! We will be back, and we will send friends!

BREATHTAKING VIEWS!

  • 5 of 5
This was our second visit. This time we found a beautiful master bedroom suite with a very comfy bed! This the best place to relax and unwind. The weather was perfect and the house had everything we needed and was very clean. We had a very hard time leaving as we looked at the view. The owners are great. This is one place that we plan on returning as often as we can.

ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!

  • 5 of 5
What a great introduction to California wine country! We just returned from our stay at Black Knight Vineyard cottage. It was just as described and even better than pictures can portray. It was clean, well decorated and the beds were comfortable. The new suite was wonderful giving my husband and I privacy when staying on our family trip with our two grown boys. The view is fantastic, I could just sit in those lounge chairs and look at it for hours sipping wine. The wine from their vineyards stood up well against the surrounding vineyards. I will definitely recommend the property to family and friends and hope to return during another season.
We enjoyed cooking at home, visiting Russian River Brew Pub in Santa Rosa, sushi at JoJo's also in Santa Rosa and our Platypus Wine Tour of the Russian River area. Also enjoyed hiking in Armstrong Redwood Regional Park in Healdsburg and mountain biking in nearby Annadel Park.
Did I mention the location of this property is just far enough from town and centrally located to visit wineries from Sonoma to the Russian River.
Thanks DeAnne and Mitch you couldn't have made the visit any more enjoyable or easier for us.
