The Forest Cottage:
An exquisite two story home nestled into a private redwood and oak glen, the Forest Cottage is your own piece of paradise. Established in the 1930’s as the original cottage on Heart Circle Mountain, the Forest Cottage has been lovingly remodeled, built out of the finest materials including Venetian plaster walls, tumbled marble, and art glass lighting. The retreat is meticulously cleaned with non-toxic, eco and allergy friendly cleaners, is pet dander free, and features sparkling white linens line dried in the Big Sur sun.
Upstairs, the romantic bedroom has two skylights for nights of star gazing, unobstructed by city lights. The queen sleigh bed is outfitted with a Tempur-Pedic mattress, a down duvet, and high thread count linens. The large sitting area has a love seat, sofa, CD/iPod/Radio System and a Flat Screen TV with a wide selection of DVDs and a HDMI hookup for your computer.
The cottage features a full gourmet kitchen, which includes completely stocked cupboards of cooking implements and condiments, a full sized refrigerator, stove/oven, microwave and large dining area. There is also a Weber BBQ on the patio where you can enjoy the beautiful yard with a custom redwood dining table. Take a nap in the 2 person hammock, kick back and sunbath on the chaise lounge chairs, or rejuvenate in the hydro massage hot tub under the canopy of redwoods and oaks, while listening to the sounds of the forest and flowing creek.
Heart Circle Mountain is in the Goldilocks Zone. Above the fog-line but below hotter and higher altitudes which can be buggy. Heart Circle has a unique and sunny microclimate that is filled with wildlife including deer, foxes, squirrels, quail, birds of prey and bobcats.
Our two private hiking trails lie just outside your door and promise a unique Big Sur experience with many lounge areas outfitted with 2-person hammocks, tables and chairs or benches, perfect for a picnic or a glass of wine.
The Waterfall Trail meanders through a redwood forest along a private section of Palo Colorado Creek and includes two lounge areas. The halfway point is the Forest Glen: a magical area on the creek with an old growth redwood fairy ring soaring overhead surrounded by a lush forest floor of sorrel and ferns. Continuing into the redwoods at the trails end you will find a second lounging area set in an intimate forest setting with a tranquil pool at the base of a 10 ft granite waterfall, surrounded by ferns, horsetails, redwoods and oaks.
The Zen Trail gently climbs up Garrapata Ridge and offers spectacular ocean, mountain, and valley views. The trail passes over our local fox’s den who might grace you with a sighting. At trails end you will find a magical lounging area nestled under a natural oak arbor with a view of the pacific ocean beyond and the dramatic ridge lines. A perfect spot to watch the red-tailed hawks and peregrine falcons fly overhead while enjoying gorgeous sunsets.
You won't have to drive anywhere to explore the beauty of Big Sur! Of course there are endless possibilities for many adventures along the coast or in the Ventana Wilderness a few miles away!

Hello! We are the owners of Heart Circle Mountain Retreat. We love Heart Circle, and have been able to continue our passion for design when creating each unique retreat. We put thought and care into designing and furnishing the retreats. We originally created them for our immediate family. We are now excited to open the retreats to more people who want to experience the healing tranquility and beauty of Heart Circle Mountain.
Andrew & Brianne purchased this cottage in 2000
We find the location of Heart Circle Mountain to be naturally healing. The climate, 360 views, and privacy all come together to create a place of peace and serenity. We consider living on this land to be the most precious gift, and have devoted ourselves to caring for it, from the green forest to the aqua blue ocean. The retreats have scenic roads in all directions and we are close to the Villages we love.
The circular driveway, ridges and mountains, all encircle the mountain on which the retreat sits, is unique to this property, and is the reason for the name, Heart Circle Mountain. The rich and abundant animal and plant life also provide us with extraordinary experiences on a daily basis. We are able to offer private hiking trails because of the large acreage, which is rarely available in Big Sur with diverse flora and fauna on one property. Enjoy idyllic Big Sur beauty, fresh & deep spring water, healing nature and rare ancient redwoods. Wild luxury on the edge of the world...
It was such a gift to turn 35 here in this sanctuary! The quiet was so reflective, the hot tub rejuvenating!
We cooked and listened to the sounds of the wood, hiked and explored the beaches and the trees!
What a wonderful respite from everyday life!! We hope to visit again soon!
Thank you again!
I rented the cottage as a surprise for my spouse for his 60th birthday. He was so pleased when we arrived and we looked around the beautiful grounds and inside the lovely and VERY clean cottage. The kitchen was nicely outfitted so we had no trouble preparing meals. The hammock was a big hit and the hot tub a wonderful luxury. We loved going to Mill Creek for the hike we had heard about. Well worth the slight trouble to get a permit. Very beautiful spot.
We will back again very soon!
We enjoyed our much to short stay at the Forest Cottage! It was idyllic, romantic, quaint.... the perfect lil shangri-la! We arrived after dark to a magical cottage with white twinkling lights! We did self check in and didn't see anyone around for our entire stay. It was so nice to wake up in the morning to the awesome birds singing. Everything was just wonderful, from the kitchen supplies to the cozy robes, to the hot tub under the redwoods, to the hammocks you will find in the yard and on the sweet hiking trails! This Lil cabin in the woods is a special place to retreat from life's stresses and distractions. How nice to unplug, unwind, and spend a few days in nature. The skylight over the comfy bed was spectacular~ Star gazing as you drift off to sleep! The attention to details makes this a perfect vacation rental. Everything was thoughtfully arranged ~ flowers on the table too! The hike to the waterfall, through the redwoods, to the hammock ~ so sweet! Then the Zen trail to the ocean view spot... two nice, short hikes. We also enjoyed a hike to the beach at Andrew Molera and a delicious dinner at Big Sur River Inn. There is so much to see and do in this beautiful corner of the world! Thanks so much Brianne and Andrew
This cottage was everything I had hoped for! An extremely clean cottage, everything in excellent shape, a full kitchen, extremely comfortable bed, hidden in amongst tall redwood trees for an extremely quiet and peaceful stay. We hiked to the waterfall in the morning, a delightful stroll (though steep in parts) to an adorable 5-foot tall waterfall in a pristine wood, complete with a nice bench to sit on. We hiked the Zen trail up for the view in the afternoon and enjoyed a lovely view of the ocean also from a brilliantly-placed bench. I would recommend this place to anyone seeking a romantic get-away.
A few specifics: downstairs is a kitchen with a table and chairs and also the bathroom, upstairs is the bed with two couches to lounge on and also a petite desk with chair. There are large windows to enjoy the view from here. We found the bedroom very pleasant to lounge around in because of the view; indeed we saw two deer wander by several times. The roadway in can be rather frightening at night in the rain, as it is very narrow and one-way in parts, so do try to arrive in daylight if you can, and in all cases approach the many blind corners at a very slow speed. Go slowly and carefully and you will see that it is very worth it once you arrive!
This is the place for anyone who wants or needs to unplug and reset. Yes, there is WiFi available on the property, but you have to work a bit for it (walk up a slight hill), which can be a very good incentive to NOT check your phone to see if it's going to rain. It will rain if it's going to rain. (It did rain one day during my stay and it's lovely to lie under the skylights and watch it).
The Cottage itself is spotlessly kept and contains just about everything you'll need except groceries.
There is a full, well-equipped kitchen which I used for every meal. There are restaurants very close by, but it does mean navigating the winding road in and out of the neighborhood.
This property is perfectly located about halfway between Big Sur proper and Carmel. It's a quick drive to many beautiful hiking areas (not to mention the stunning Garrapata Beach), but for easy and private moments with beauty, take one of the trails right there outside your door and picnic beside a stream.
My husband and I stayed at the Forest Cottage for 5 days/4 nights over Christmas. The cottage is well equipped and was clean. The bed is comfy as are the couches in the loft area. Having the hot tub was such a treat to come home to after long and strenuous hikes. While we were sitting in the hot tub one afternoon several deer came onto the property and grazed while we watched. Definitely bring your own groceries...the closest restaurant is not far but driving those roads is quite nerve wracking and I wouldn't want to drive them at night after some wine.
Such a peaceful getaway! We enjoyed being completely off the grid away from our devices for a few days (although the Internet was available a short walk up the hill). You feel completely away from it all even though it's just a short two miles off the highway - it feels like you are driving into Hobbit land on the windy road in. Fully appointed kitchen and a fun DVD collection for lounging around. Short drive from many national parks - we enjoyed a really great hike in nearby Pfeiffer Big Sur park - where the woods are recovering from that fire a while back - was really interesting. Nice short hikes on the property too for some easy walking around. We had a Hyundai rental and it made it up the hill fine. Rocky Point Restaurant is across the main road about a 1/4 mile down - has great outdoor dining. The weather was perfectly clear, sunny, and warm for our end of November trip.
