BEAUTIFUL LAKE SHORE RETREAT - CASITA ROSA

Lake Atitlan House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom + Den, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

In 2004 I experienced a burst of joy when I saw one of my many dreams come true - the completed construction of 'Casita Rosa'. It is a cozy home full of light with open doors and an instant inspiration to writers and artists who will totally find themselves in their element.

From every corner of this endearing home you can admire the wonders of nature, a spectacular sunrise with a rare combination of colors that blend with dream and reality, you awake with the vague memory of your dreams to an incredible lively reality. The warm morning breeze invites you to leave your bed as your eyes follow your surroundings to discover magnificent volcanoes, mysterious mountains and above all you see in front of you the intense magnitude of the world’s most beautiful lake (as described by Alexander von Humbold). The lake returns your gaze and nourishes your soul.

In the morning you will find yourself astonished by the silence of the lake and from the spacious terrace (107m) you can feel the breeze caress your face, butterflies and birds will greet you in the new day. You will be thankful to the old tree for providing shade, for the sun is already hot at the early hours. After breakfast the lake invites you to submerge yourself in its purifying waters.

In the afternoon your curiosity is aroused by the rolling waves and takes you exploring on spectacular walks, private boat trips, kayaking, or public boat trips to neighboring villages named after the 12 apostles. You can also walk up the mountain to the town of Santa Cruz. On occasion you can catch a beautiful rainbow smiling at you as it reflects itself on the lake like a mirror.

With the refreshing afternoon breeze, relaxing in the hammock, ideas take form and expand to the mountains, place of Mayan ancestral rituals, imposing and capturing the mystery of the Maya.

Sitting in front of the fireplace you can witness the sunset, the fire being another natural element you can enjoy. You can enjoy a cozy night listening to the waves against the rocks as if they were right at your feet. Later on the sky abounding with stars makes its spectacular appearance, full moon nights, nights that will take you to a different world - an unforgettable experience.

Casita Rosa is exclusively romantic and quiet, away from public traffic and a 3 minute walk to the nearest dock. It is a safe place.

The kitchen is equipped with a gas stove with oven, a refrigerator, a microwave, and all utensils needed for cooking.

The patio or open air area for eating breakfast, as well as the churrasquera (BBQ grilling area), will add pleasure to your stay.

The living room has a fireplace, a sofa bed, sanitary room, and upper windows decorated with colored glass. The lower part of the windows are clear white exposing the view of the lake.

The bedroom has a bathroom and charming shower, a king size bed with orthopedic mattress. An imperial size collapsible bed is also available.

The balcony which is located at the upper level of Casita Rosa offers an amazing and unique perspective of the surroundings.

Guatemala is the country of my birth and my family. I love living on Lake Atitlan because this is my favorite place to be. Since I am Guatemalan, I can guide you on how to best enjoy all what this area has to offer. If you wish, I would be pleased to prepare wonderful recipes from my Grandmother's kitchen.

DIRTY AND UNMAINTAINED

  • 1 of 5
For some perspective, I'm not a really high maintenance traveler. Usually we try to spend $125 or less a night on hotels, but don't stay in hostels. I've traveled the world, and this would be the 2nd worst stay I've had. The other was in the jungles of Costa Rica, where the cabin was open air and the extreme humidity meant wet bed sheets and wet clothes for 4 days. This was ever so slightly better.

To get to the property, you walk from Casa Rosa where you get the keys, across the waterfront "road" that is planks of wood over the water. Then through a small section of overgrown plants that you have to push out of the way. There are no lights, so if it dark you need flashlights to get there and have to watch your footing for roots and rocks. Not easy to get luggage to, but luckily we pack light and had everything in backpacks.

Upon first inspection, it was obvious that the house is not in the same condition as the website's photos. The patio was all dirty and the couch covering and pillows were shabby. We were led to the casita by a younger guy, who told us that he would retrieve some drinking water for us, but in the 3 days we were there he never returned. The worst was once it got dark outside, giant 2-3" diameter spiders came out of the rafters and were all over the ceiling, on walls, on the toilet, in the shower, etc... We were told by one of our local guides that the spiders are harmless, but that didn't make them any less creepy. Plus there were a bunch of dead ones all over the floor. The other reviews certainly painted a better picture of this place, and possibly when they visited it was being maintained.

SPIDERS INFECTION

  • 1 of 5
It was very unpleasant to stay in Casita rosa, the house was infected with spiders. My husband and I couldn't sleep. We were going to stay for an entire week but after our first night we left running from that place. Mrs. Rosa was very rude over the phone and lack of understanding.
I think that if you are going to rent a house you should give it the proper care.

We counted 48 spiders in less than 1 minute. Unfortunately we got there late and couldn't leave because transportation.

INCREDIBLE AND AMAZING BUT...

  • 5 of 5
We were lucky enough to stay in this charming house on this spectacular lake surrounded by these magical mountains in the serenity of the Atitlan community for three weeks over the winter holidays. Other reviewers have done an excellent job describing as well as words can, the richness of the experience so I'll just add what hasn't been mentioned. Rosa, the owner, was very helpful in arranging transportation for our late arrival and for responding quickly to minor inconveniences we had when the hot water heater failed, when an outdoor water pipe broke, and when the electricity was off briefly.
What has been mentioned only in passing in previous reviews is the rising water that effectively makes access to the casita quite challenging. The exterior photos in the listing are not accurate as the foliage in the foreground no longer exists and probably hasn't for months. It has been destroyed as the lake has risen to the edge of the terrace and flooded the front entry stairs. The result is a climb up and down a narrow rocky path for about 15 yards from the casita to the smooth lawn of Isla Verde hotel next door. From there the 400 meter walk to the Santa Cruz dock (access to Casa Rosa hotel,
the main incoming and outgoing dock to Panajachel, La Iguana Perdida, the popular gathering place, and access to Santa Cruz) is almost completely over water on a series of boards of varying widths ( maybe 12 " to 30"), varying heights, without lighting and with no handrails for some stretches. The only way to negotiate this terrain is very carefully and after 6 p.m. with a flashlight in hand. My husband and I are nearly retirement age but in pretty good shape. We made this trip many times but never allowed ourselves more than one glass of wine at dinner so we could concentrate on the trip home in the dark. While this boat-like isolation does add further charm to the casita and we highly recommend a visit, the physical access challenges should be addressed by anyone contemplating a stay.

MY HOME FOR 3 MONTHS

  • 5 of 5
This was my home for three months and it is a magical place. Nearly every window in the Casita has a beautiful view of the lake and its stunning scenery. When the sun hits the water out front it is a beautiful shade of turquoise and great for swimming. The large terraced yard is the ideal place to wile away the afternoon soaking in the sun while reading a book. All day long boats pass in the distance, and at night the stars blanket the sky. Lake Atitlan is an enchanting place, and the Casita has made me want to stay here forever.

The Casita itself is a great place to live and relax. The kitchen has everything you need and the living room and bedroom are very comfortable. It has a well-sized shower and endless hot water. The upstairs balcony became my favorite place to read a book, drink of cup of coffee, and take-in the lake. The fireplace in the living room is wonderful after the sun goes down. This is a great place to "get away from it all" and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Rosa, the owner, is a very kind woman and excellent host. In addition to the Casita, she runs a hotel about 10 minutes away called "Casa Rosa," so she is very good at assisting guests with whatever they may need. Together with her daughter Nicole, she runs a waterfront restaurant at the hotel with amazing views of the lake and volcanoes.

The local people are lovely and eager to help with anything you need. For relatively cheaply ($2-3/hour) you can hire a local to help cook or clean. If you make them a list, they will gladly do all your grocery shopping for you in Panajachel. Maria, the woman who worked with me two days per week, was an invaluable asset and made my life infinitely easier. She has become a dear friend, and I would highly recommend asking Rosa to send Maria to work for you.

The water level reflected in the photos is significantly lower than present levels. During my stay at the height of the rainy season, the water was about three feet below the front terrace and living room windows. When the dry season arrived the water level slowly got lower. One thing to keep in mind about Lake Atitlan is that its water level has risen significantly in the past several years due to heavy rains during hurricanes. This has submerged many houses around the lake and turned much of the lakefront trail in Santa Cruz into an extensive system of boardwalks. For the Casita, the rising water only brings the lake closer to you!

BEAUTIFUL PLACE, WATERFRONT

  • 5 of 5
We stayed there for a whole week in August 2012 with our 3 years old child. Although the photos of the exterior weren't all accurate (the water level was really high, so the water was much nearer to the house than what is shown on the pictures), everything else was perfect (beautiful, clean, well maintained, big enough for the 3 of us). The house is easily accessible by boat, making the visit to all the other villages around the lake quite easy. The lake in itself is gorgeous and swimmable directly at the house.

I'd recommend the house, without hesitation, unless you're travelling with young children : an unprotected stair between the kitchen and the room maybe be a bit hasardous.

The owner is very friendly and helpful. She also own an hotel nearby with a waterfront cafe, with delicious foods and drinks and a magnificiant garden.

TASTEFUL, SECLUDED, AND GOOD VALUE

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I happily stumbled upon this house rental in July 2011. The house is situated at an especially quiet point in Santa Cruz la Laguna. There are constant lanchas (boats) that zoom by on the other side of the village, so if you stay on the opposite side – the side that Laguna Lodge is on, for example – there is a constant buzz of boats going on during the day time, and much more commercial development (although Santa Cruz is on the whole a quiet place, so it’s all relative). Casa Rosa, by contrast, is much quieter and more isolated. The only place next to it is the Isla Verde lodge, which is quiet and chilled out, and nice to have next door as they have very decent food and a good happy hour special in the early evening. Casa Rosa offers a piece of the lake almost entirely to yourself for swimming, reading, and contemplating the beauty of Atitlan. You can also rent kayaks at a place nearby. The house is simply but tastefully appointed, and its unusual architecture incorporates a lot of outdoor space on its premises. You don’t get the ‘wow shot’ view onto the volcanoes, but the quiet and the beauty of the lake more than make up for it. Casa Rosa is very good value – it’s only slightly more expensive than some of the other hotels and lodges in town, and you get an entire space to yourself. There is a good size kitchen, and endless hot water for showers. The place is suitable for two people. We also enjoyed meeting Rosa, an elegant and helpful Guatemalan woman who is enjoyable to do business with. I strongly recommend Santa Cruz la Laguna compared to other villages on Lake Atitlan. It is especially beautiful and undeveloped. We dream of returning to Casa Rosa some time again.
