Situated on the shores of the world-famous Lake Atitlan, Casa Paxanax provides privacy and tranquility, along with unsurpassable views across to the lake’s three sentinel volcanoes. This lake-side property is on the small bay and community of Paxanax, nestled below the Mayan village of Santa Cruz on the north side of Lake Atitlan.
From the shore a pretty path leads to our charming two-story home with a large, covered terrace. The cozy open-plan living area and kitchen lead to a bathroom (with bath tub) and one double bedroom and one single bedroom. Via exterior stairs the master bedroom is accessed, and has an uninterrupted, tree-top view of the lake.
The large terrace, which doubles as an eating/recreational area, greatly enlarges the atmospheric property. It is the perfect spot for a family meal or to just laze in the hammock with a good book and soak up the atmosphere.
The small garden is full of beautiful flowers and fruit trees. Check out our picture of the Rainbow Eucalyptus tree! Or else fresh fruit and vegetables are readily available at the daily market in Panajachel (Pana). There also a couple of good supermarkets offering all other groceries.
The house also offers a private dock to sunbath on, or take long cool swims in the calm morning.
Accessible only by boat, it is just a 7 min lancha ride to the main hub of the lake Panajachel. Public lancha go back and forth every half hour or hour.
Lake Atitlan provides a multitude of interesting day trips to other Mayan villages around the lake e.g. Santiago Atitlan, Santa Catarina, San Antonio, San Pedro and San Marcos, as well as more adventurous activities like paragliding and kayaking. For those who wish to indulge and pamper themselves, the nearby Villa Sumaya boutique hotel offers yoga classes, massages and various therapies.
Although Aldous Huxley’s comment that Lake Atitlan is the “most beautiful lake in the world”, is in fact a misquote, it would be hard to dispute this statement.
His actually words were: “It is really too much of a good thing.' Come and judge for yourself, and see where nature and Mayan culture collide, creating an unforgettable experience.

I bought this property in 2000, not expecting to live there, but to have the perfect retreat home for weekends. Circumstances changed, and we ended up living in this home for 5 years. Due to my studies, I rent the home out. If you love it half as much as we did living there, you will be happy!
The house is situated right on the shores of Lake Atitlan, and is really very peaceful. Nearby, you will enjoy the benefits of a few local restaurants, where it is fun to meet fellow travelers!
We parked our truck at the Marina and met Santos for the boat ride to the house. He was kind enough to help with the luggage and give us an introduction to the house.
The home is wonderful. Thank you. The children are enjoying the selection of books and all the comfortable places to sit and read. Our daughter, Julie (4), immediately loved the room she calls "the princess room." The boys (4&7) are sharing the room with the twin beds. The house arrangement is working very well for our family. Everybody really enjoyed a cooked meal out on the patio for dinner. Marie says thank you for the fresh flowers in the rooms. We both really enjoy the peacefulness of the area. She is currently enjoying the calmness of the morning and went outside for a hike.
We loved our stay at this lakefront home on beautiful Lake Atitlan! The views are expansive and unrestricted, best enjoyed from the hammock and outdoor dining table. It was the perfect way to unwind after some long days of travel. We enjoyed cooking in the well-equipped kitchen while our kids played games left for guests to use. The home is tasteful and relaxed, very comfortable, and the owner provides detailed information about what to do at the lake. The caretaker was wonderful and made us feel welcomed and safe. This was my favorite stop on our entire vacation. Very highly recommended!
Exactly what Lake Atitlan is all about: relaxed, laid back and charming. We had a blast.
We spent 11 days at Casa Paxanax in January 2013. The things we loved about this place were the fantastic lake and volcano views, the garden area, the patio, the roomy kitchen/dining/living room space, the upstairs master bedroom with private balcony and a helpful caretaker. However, there are several things on this listing and in the owner’s information sheet that did not line up with what we found when we arrived. 1) The wireless internet is not "wireless" in the true sense of the word. You must have a USB port on your electronic device to access it. A tablet device without a port will not work. 2) There was no barbeque grill 3) There is an extra charge if you use the house power boat. This was mentioned, but it was in quetzales, which wouldn’t mean much to most people. We found it much cheaper to travel by the public lancha. 4) Because the level of lake has risen so much, much of the gardens are under water. Do not expect to supply your table with fresh fruit from the garden. 5) There seems to be some debate about the quality of the lake water and contamination. We did not swim or get in the water, not wanting to become sick at this point in our travels. Thus swimming, snorkeling, and the rest of the water sport activities became null and void. 6) Many of the activities listed are not available at the house or in the bay, but at other locations around the lake. The VRBO site makes it sound like it's a resort area with all these things available right there.
Other items of note: 1) The onsite caretaker doesn't speak any English, only Spanish. Problem resolution through the property manager by phone didn't work out very well for us, so through our broken Spanish, his broken English and sign language we managed to figure out most of the issues, but it was frustrating. 2) The living room area could use a couch. The photos show bean bags and that’s all there is besides a twin bed and a table with 1 chair. For younger people this may not be a problem. 3) Due to the high lake level there are no beaches and instead of the pleasant beach walk to the Santa Cruz dock area we were expecting, we were met with rocky, steep trails that the person who planned the trip could not walk on. Getting to the local restaurants on foot was not possible.
In spite of the above, we still enjoyed our time at Casa Paxanax visiting the villages and riding the lanchas into Pana to shop for groceries, etc. The whole package was quite a cultural experience.
We stayed here in April and absolutely loved this charming home and garden as well as the fantastic views! It is truly a paradise and offered us the tranquil setting we were looking for at the end of our Guatemalan adventure. The staff at this home - especially the caretaker- were so helpful and accommodating and made us feel very welcome. My only word of caution to future guests would be that the speed boat had a bit of trouble with the weight of the six people in our party and broke down a few times. However, we still managed to get back forth as necessary so it was no big deal. I would recommend this house to anyone!
What a wonderful stay! The place was absolutely ideal. We loved being right on the lake front and having our own dock too. The house is not large but the huge out door patio doubles the size of the house and with such beautiful weather, we were mostly outdoors, or sunbathing on the round dock. Thank you, thank you for such a wonderful stay. We will be back!
I very much appreciated your well equipped kitchen with all the necessary appliances to be able to cook up a really gourmet mea. Being open planned, it was fun to be able to cook, sip my wine and chat with our friends all at the same time. Our candle lit dinners outside on your front porch really made it for us! Many thanks.
