We stayed here with family to celebrate my parents 50th wedding anniversary. It was fabulous. The home is beautiful and roomy to accommodate all of us. The views from the deck were breathtaking, and so relaxing. The kids enjoyed the lagoons, kayaks, and basketball court. Sandy and John were so friendly and welcoming! Grant gave us tons of great information and made us feel at home. I don't think we could have asked for a more relaxing stay! We will definitely stay here again next time we are in Hawaii. Lots of local areas to see, Hilo is close enough (about 30-40 minutes) to get to for activities. We enjoyed Volcano National Park. Kona is further away, about a two and a half hour drive, this was where we went for a whale watching tour.
Everything about our stay was textbook (or storybook?) perfect.
- Private lagoons (pl.), with snorkeling, kayaking, swimming, and...sea turtles?!
- A daily "pet" puffer fish feeding
- Reeeeally unobstructed views of the lagoons and ocean
- Phenomenal and gracious hosts and property manager. (Two BIG thumbs up.)
- Tons of sights w/in 5-20 min drive from the property.
I could go on and on, but all of this is already in the house description. It's not often that something is exactly as it appears as advertised on teh Interwebs, but in this case, the property - and its hosts - exceeded all expectations. It gorgeous, serene, rejuvenating, and exactly what my family (w/ 7 & 9 yr olds) needed, and we're already hoping to return as soon as we can.
Thank you thank you thank you!
We stayed at the Kapoho home for two weeks. We had big plans to explore the island...but we loved the property and the cute little town of Pahoa so much that we did not want to leave. We explored all of the local swimming holes...the tidal pools, the champaign ponds, the warm park down the street, but none of them were as nice as the lagoon right on the property.
The coqui frogs politely went to sleep by 11:00, the rain came and went, but was never a bother, the breeze was reliable, and the stars and the sunrises were beautiful.
Right across the street on Friday is a great little fruit and vegetable market, and I highly recommend taking the hike up the hill by Green Lake. Smiley works the market and she can give you all the info you need.
The people all around the area were so friendly. We felt so welcome and appreciated. The kids loved our time there. We were able to put away our screens and enjoy nature and each other's company.
The property was just as amazing as the pictures indicate, the owners were super nice, Grant was very helpful. The nearby town has great restaurants. Don't miss the Tin Shack Bakery, which has the best coffee, the Island Market for great healthy food, and all of the local farmers markets.
We had such a great time.
We loved every minute of our stay. Grant, John and Sandy were kind and lovely hosts. It is an awe-inspiring location and I feel blessed to have been able to experience such beauty.
The basketball court and swimming in the lagoons were such fun! For the quieter moments, sitting in the gazebo with a good book and listening to the waves was not to be missed.
The art in the home was something special as well. Grant, it was a pleasure to meet you and view your work!
Thank you again. Be well.
We had a wonderful time in this house. The property it is on is beautiful. Grant and all his helpful advise really made the trip for us. He was so fun and friendly. He even gave our kids an art class while we hiked a volcano. The house was beautiful and had everything we needed. The layout is very spacious. There is no air condition which was not really a problem. The weather is perfect. However, I would have preferred to have air condition while we slept rather than sleeping with the windows open but that is just personal preference. I would go back in a heart beat! Thanks Grant for all your hospitality. Hope we meet again soon.

We spent a wonderful week at the rental property in the Kapoho Beach Community near Pahoa. Just as described in the VRBO listing, the rental was elegant, beautifully-appointed, clean, well-maintained and comfortable, and the site was stunning--easily the nicest unit we have ever rented during our four visits to Hawai'i. The main house and its annex easily accommodated six related adults. The grounds were a storybook location for our son's wedding. The owners' representative was exceptionally friendly and helpful but never intrusive.
The younger members of our group spent considerable time swimming (the unit lent them snorkels, masks and swim fins) and paddling kayaks in the lagoons, and especially admired the resident sea turtle and the hungry puffer that came to the shore to beg when approached. We also enjoyed snorkeling above the coral at nearby Kapoho Kai.
We were mostly occupied with wedding-associated events, but we still managed three meals at Luquin's (grubby but good Tex-Mex) and one at Kaleo's Bar and Grill (ignore the shabby exterior appearance--it was nice inside inside and the food was delicious); both are in the town of Pahoa. We had an upscale Hawai'ian plate lunch served in a bento box at the newly-reopened Volcano House Restaurant in the National Park and are happy to report that the food there has been much improved, although we missed the funky 19th-century decor they used to have--gone except for the fireplace. The view of the old crater from the restaurant remains impressive--no renovation needed there.
We always enjoy visiting the beautiful Hawai'i Tropical Botanical Garden north of Hilo (not the "World" Botanical Gardens) and were happy to find that the sandwiches and smoothies at "What's Shakin'?) just north of the garden were as good as we remembered.
Hilo itself looks down on its luck and the old business district is sad, except for the farmers' market, which is fun and a good place to buy local fruits and vegetables. (The shopping malls with the usual stores in the newer part of Hilo can be useful.)
I definitely recommend the VRBO rental unit and the Kapoho area of Pahoa on the Big Island for a restful tropical vacation.
