We stayed at the house with a group of friends (10 people). the house is wonderful, huge, large open spaces, many windows and some really cool architectural features. Compared to other houses in the area at this time of the year, the price / night is very cheap. We enjoyed our stay and despite the negative comments below, would love to come back.
There are just a few things that I want to mention for future consideration.
- AFTER I made the booking and payment we were informed that you need a 4-wheel drive. And you do definitely need it if there's snow! We had three cars; one of them didnt make it up the dirt road leading to the house and the other one didn't even make it up the steep hill leading to the dirtroad
- the clean towels were hidden in the drier and we didnt find them until we started doing laundry before we left
- the upstairs bathroom doesn't lock
- there was no dishwasher detergent - doing dishes for 10 people is really no fun
- the sleeping situation is a little strange: there are 2 rooms with a queen, 1 room with 1 twin bed and 1 room with 2 twin beds (the beds are all quite short and not for people over 6'). the house is advertised to sleep 10 people, so the remaining 3 guests have to sleep in the living room on pull-out couches, but the couches can't actually be pulled out because of the way they are arranged in the room.
Sounds travels from everywhere in the house, especially from the open kitchen, to the living room so whoever sleeps there won't be able to fall asleep until everybody else does.
- the downstairs fridge was not working and the small fridge in the kitchen filled up quickly with food and drinks for 10 guests
Some guests mentioned that the house was not clean enough. This situation seems to have been fixed - or at least there were no complaints from our end.
My family found this home to be architecturally amazing and full of character and pleasant surprises!
The downstairs bar and huge TV were a huge hit after a long day of hitting the slopes!
The upstairs massive kitchen with the cathedral ceiling made it a pleasure to cook and entertain.
The radiant heat in the bathroom floors was a welcome luxury.
The bedrooms and beds were a little small compared to the size of the house, but we managed.
One suggestion I would make is to bring wood for the wood burning stove. It would make the whole experience of spending a weekend in the mountains even more enjoyable.
We would definitely rent it again!
(7 of us) Went up for a weekend at Hunter Mtn. We looked all over for a suitable place to stay and finally settled on this beautiful listing. I hesitated in publishing this review because, in doing so I may actually be encouraging competition for the property that may prevent me from staying there again.
The house is absolutely gorgeous. A little difficult to reach on a snowy day without 4WD/AWD and a strong winter driving sense, but perfectly appointed, removed from the tourist scene, and excessively comfortable.
Most importantly, it's a steal at the listed price for the value of the atmosphere, and the number of comfortable beds available. It's a bit of a treck from the Mountain, but nothing good comes easy. Rent here. No. Wait, don't. Move along. Nothing to see here.
Overall, we had a lovely experience. The home was quite large, beautiful views, cozy...
A few comments/recommendations: There are two sleep sofas, but only one is accessible (second sofa was on platform in media room); therefore, a few of our guests were forced to sleep curled up on the couch. This couch should be moved, or listing should be updated.
Downstairs broiler was broken, therefore entry area was freezing! Based on our conversation with the gentleman who called us during our stay, it sounds like they knew it was broken, but neglected to fix for our arrival.
Additionally, this house needs more sheets/blankets. For starters, some of the quilts on the beds had a horrible odor, so we were forced to do several loads of laundry upon arrival. Additionally, there was a handful of mismatched sheets and some dingy blankets in the closet, none of which we used without washing first. This should have been taken care of by the cleaning company, particularly since we had to pay a cleaning fee.
While the house was by no means perfect, the overall experience was awesome and I would recommend. At the end of the day, the time with friends and the relaxing setting outweighed the few housekeeping items that needed to be addressed.
The Pros: My family (4 adults and 4 children) spent a week in this beautiful lodge in early August. The property’s totally secluded and is great for families with loud kids.
The home’s interior living space is stunning—particularly the rustically contemporary kitchen/dining area.
The TV room’s warm and cozy with tiered stadium seating and their bookshelves are stocked for readers of all ages. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had a variety of toys and puzzles for the kids as well.
You’ll absolutely love the mountain views from the deck. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Catskills and highly recommend this home. For $1,500 a week, it’s a good deal.
The Cons: If you’re not accustomed to lighting pilot lights, the old gas oven can be tricky. It works fine once you get the hang of it though.
The grounds were overgrown with chest-high weeds and the home’s exterior could use some TLC.
There’s no internet access and very limited cell phone reception. So prepare yourself for that. I enjoyed the break from civilization but my husband and brother struggled with it.
As other guests have noted, if you’re going with a large group, be sure to bring plenty of extra kitchen, hand and bath towels.
And finally, as you can glean from the photo, the tennis court has seen better days. The fence has partially collapsed in several spots and there’s a slim patch of grass growing through a crack on one side. With that said, it’s still totally playable and we used it daily. Bring lots of tennis balls. They’re very difficult to retrieve from the weeds and pickers surrounding the fence. And no stores in the region sell tennis balls. Trust me, I checked.
Recommendations: If you plan on skiing, Ziplining at Hunter Mountain, visiting the Zoom Flume Water Park or golfing while you’re in the area, I’d recommend getting a free Catskills Greene Card through Greene County Tourism/Great Northern Catskills. Google it. You can save a lot of money with their mid-week buy-one, get one free offers.
This place is HUGE! It is so luxurious. Beautiful and enormous kitchen and den. Since it is so big I recommend going with at least 8 people. I plan on coming back.
Greene County, nestled between the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains, is beautiful, spiritually uplifting and provides lots of fun year round for families of all ages. It is located just two hours north of NYC and is a short 10 - 15 minute drive to the Hunter and Windham Ski Mountains. Enjoy the great outdoors while skiing, hiking, biking, golfing, swimming, tubing, rock climbing, boating or fishing, or simply kick back and unwind See and explore the beauty that inspired Thomas Cole, walk in the footsteps of Rip Van Winkle, or take the family to the great county fairs, festivals and art exhibits. This will be a vacation you will never forget.
