About The Owner

We are retired educators - Mike was a science teacher, principal, and associate superintendent. Mike currently gives workshops for NWEA and Cindy is a travel consultant.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2002

Why The Owner chose Jonesport

Jonesport is unique in that it exemplifies Maine. Most tourists don't travel north of Bar Harbor, yet there is a beautiful coast and pretty villages. Jonesport has one of the world's largest lobster fishing fleets. The town is quaint with it's harbor, white church steeples, and friendly people.

What makes this cottage unique

We found it a calm, quiet, serene location where we can relax, yet take day trips to so many wonderful places nearby. You can buy fresh lobster at the pier in Jonesport, explore tide pools in your back yard, walk to the island at low-tide, or swim at nearby Sandy River Beach. Kayaking and tours to see whales and puffins are available in Jonesport. Golf is just minutes away as is the University of Maine, Machias with a fitness center and library open to the public. Visit Bar Harbor, Eastport, and Campobello Island, New Brunswick - all an easy drive away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The cottage and the view were everything I'd dreamed of and more!!! When we first arrived we got out of the car after a 9 hour trip and went to see the water. The view just took our breath away!!! We all just stood there and couldn't believe we were lucky enough to be spending a week there!! The cottage is so sweet and homey, we felt at ease right away, and it even had that feeling of "home" when we came back from the grocery store. Maddy just loved playing with her toys in the windowsill with that glorious view in front of her.

I loved the way the cottage was decorated, it gave it such a warm Maine feeling. It is similar to how I decorate with country things at home, so that was really fun to me. The cottage had everything we could need, and I could "feel" your presence so much, I felt that any minute you would be arriving back at your beloved cottage. It is so gracious of you to share this very special place with all of us, I will always be thankful for that cozy restful week I spent there. Everyone we met was so nice, one night in a big rainstorm we found that out tire was going flat and the place in town for closed, so we stopped at Tall Barney's to ask for directions to an pump, and one of the girls called her husband at the Coast Guard Station and he told her to send us over and he would fix us up. He came out in the pouring rain and was such a gentlemen!!! We went to Tall Barney's the next night and had the best scallops we'd ever had.

We did see the eagles and were so ecstatic,, as we'd talked about seeing them since last winter. We saw them several times as well as the seals, and blue herons. Aron walked out to the island several times and found it fascinating. We visited Jasper Beach and really liked it, then took our 2 grandsons 7 & 10 over to collect rocks when they visited. They came up from Liberty Maine, from a church camp they go to, and we celebrated all our birthdays with a barbeque and a visit to the beach.

My husband and son enjoyed looking through the telescope, and binoculars and they enjoyed the hominess of the cottage as well. We all read a lot of the books and notebook etc that you had there for us, and enjoyed learning about a part of Maine that we had never visited before.

Thank you again for a wonderful visit to your fabulous cottage by the sea, we will always cherish our memories of our week there.

Terrific Spot for Quiet Vacation with Superb View

  • 5 of 5
We wanted a quiet place close to the water that was near favorite hiking places (Great Wass Is., Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge, Bold Coast & Campobello Is.) and this was it! We spent a wonderful week with wonderful weather, breakfast on the deck in the warming sun every morning, watching eider ducks and an occasional loon floating and diving near shore, walks on Sandy River Beach & out to Bar Island. The cottage is very well equipped (kitchen had everything I needed to make most of our meals there). Though there are cottages close by on either side, they are screened by a hedge of trees and bushes so we had plenty of privacy. And the view of the sunrise is spectacular, not to mention the view at all times. This place exceeded our expectations and we highly recommend it.

Wonderful Vacation!

  • 5 of 5
Thank you for a wonderful vacation. We enjoyed exploring Jonesport, which is just a gem, and the neighboring towns. We visited Machias and found some great rocks at Jasper Beach. We also saw the memorial site of Fort O’Brien, and the waterfall was just awesome! We explored the island and had some great seafood – a wonderful vacation. Thank you again and we hope to be back!

Peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5
The rain and the mist just added to the ambiance of your beautiful Cottage by the Sea. Coming from the desert, the limitless view of water, the green green fresh leaves and grass and the ability to pick your own “Just-catched” lobster dinner are such appreciated delights! We have traveled the world but never experienced the uniqueness of an Eastern active fishing village, the friendliness of your neighbors and images of what life must have been like here in times past. Thank you for sharing your paradise with us !

Wow! What a view!

  • 5 of 5
Wow! What a view – we had a wonderful week in your cottage by the sea! Eating lobster every day we picked up at the Jonesport Coop. Fresh out of the ocean. Thanks for the big lobster pot and all the utensils. They sure came in handy. Being a huge lighthouse fan, we enjoyed all the lighthouse deco. Bar Harbor and Acadia park were beautiful bu the quiet of the cottage was so welcomed after that. Went to Jasper Beach, Lubec, and explored the area around here. We walked to the island at low tide. But the best of all we enjoyed the beautiful view. Thank you very much!

Best ever!

  • 5 of 5
As frequent visitors to Maine, we have rented many cottages from Wells to Winter Harbor. The Cottage by the Sea was by far the best equipped with all we needed to enjoy seafood and the wonderful world of Downeast. The cottage fulfilled our every need. Very comfortable and serene!

Maybe not!

  • 2 of 5
Very cramped, especially when filled with owners' belongings and a lot of kitch. No easy access to water. Smelled very musty. The sheets did not seem to have been washed between guests. Restaurants mentioned in description (in 2011) were mostly closed. Groceries in Machias (a 40 minute one way trip). Was really happy to leave!

Owner's Response: This guest wrote a review 2 years after she stayed, which was a bit confusing to me. She didn't say a word while there or right afterwards. The only owner things in the cottage are some raincoats and warm coats, which we leave for guests' use.
Sheets are washed before each guest arrival and neither our housecleaner nor our caretaker have every noticed a musty smell (nor have any other guests).
We have no control over the restaurants in the area on whether they are still open when our guests arrive.
