This is a rustic cedar log cabin that has most of the amenities of home. The view from the front window wall and deck is the beautiful expansive northwoods and overlooks a semi-private lake that holds trophy sized northern pike and walleye as well as other warm water species of fish. The cabin is heated by a propane furnace and freestanding propane fireplace. The open great room has vaulted ceilings to compliment the cedar log wall construction. Use of boat and motor, and a canoe, are part of the package. A modern dock provides boat moorage and a relaxing place to view sunsets and enjoy the clear water of Porter Lake. Additional fishing and water recreation is available at nearby Cable Lake, which offers a public boat landing.
In addition to fishing, a network of gravel roads provide access to miles of potential ORV use, hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, bird watching, fall color touring, and hunting. The area is known to be some of the best habitat for moose in Michigan. Bald eagles are commonly seen from the cabin deck and loons are known to nest on the lake. Waterfowl, white tail deer, grouse, and black bear are native to the area and abundant.
The cabin is not located in or near Iron River. It is approximately 20 miles north and 9 miles west of Crystal Falls.
My brother and I rented this cabin for a fishing getaway and we had an absolutely wonderful time! The cabin was exactly what we were looking for - it is on a lake with great fishing, it is isolated and it was clean and comfortable with everything we needed for our time there. The owners were wonderful and made sure we had everything we needed for our stay - including some very good fishing tips for the lake. The weather was perfect allowing us to spend the mornings and afternoons on the lake and the evenings around the fire pit talking, laughing and stargazing (I had forgotten there were so many stars in the sky). Our intention was to unplug from our busy lives and businesses and relax. And that was exactly what this cabin and the location allowed us to do! We both left refreshed and re-energized. And both of us agree that we can't wait to go back - in fact, we've already reserved a week for next year! If you're looking for a great getaway to relax and take in the beauty of nature - you can't go wrong here. I personally would highly recommend it.
The cabin was everything we'd hoped it would be. Very clean and isolated. The fishing was great, caught some nice small mouth, walleye and northern. Julie & Jim visited to make sure everything was going as expected. Pet friendly so my lab had a field day in the water. All in all a great, relaxing get-away and look forward to coming back next year. Thank you both for everything.
We booked this cabin for a guys fishing trip getaway. Jim and Julie couldnt have been more accomodating or nicer to work with. I had quite a few questions before we came and they promptly responded every time with great info. The cabin and property were amazing and kept very well maintained. The drive in from the highway was a great adventure in itself and made you realize how isolated the cabin and lake really are. We originally planned on going as a group of 4 but plans changed and it ended up just being 3 of us. The cabin could easily sleep 6 but a group of 3-4 would be ideal with plenty of room to spare. The kitchen and dining area are very spacious and had all the ammenities you need. They have 2 smaller refrigerators which was very nice since we brought up food to cook all week. There is a very nice propane grill on the deck and a firepit off the deck to enjoy at nights. We fished every day for 10-12 hours. The boats are in very nice shape and served us well all week. We also took out the canoe one day. The dock is large and very stable and offers an amazing view of the 270 acre lake. We only saw 1 or 2 boats all week and there are plenty of places to fish with different depths and structures all over. All-in-all we had a great time and actually booked our spot for next year already and cannot wait to get back. There was no TV channels and spotty (at best cell service) but that was what we needed to unplug for a week and enjoy all this property had to offer.
this was by far the best setting for a cabin that we have stayed in with our dogs and the cabin was perfect for our needs. You get the best of both worlds, your drive down a gravel winding road is about 9 miles off the main road. The cabin is sitting up above / on the lake with only a handfull of homes yet within reasonable distance to town considering. The water is shallow for quite some distance but rocky bottom so I wore sport flip flops (non slip). I made sure to bring 50' long leads for the dogs so they could retrieve tennis balls. We took a day trip to the Porcupine Mountains and Lake Superior and lots of local hikes Canyon Falls etc. Sitting on the porch with that view, a fire going and sipping some wine was the ideal end to any day. Julie and Jim - thank you for the hospitality! Hope to see you next year
We have stayed in a couple of other cabins in MI & WI, and this one was by far our favorite. It was beautiful and very clean and well kept. I cannot say enough about the views from the windows and deck. We loved waking up in the loft and opening our eyes to the beautiful views -- a great way to start the day. Also loved sipping coffee on the deck in the morning - we saw lots of wildlife, and it is so peaceful! There is also a screened in porch with patio furniture you can use (attached to an outbuilding) that is not mentioned above. It was great when we needed some shade or when it was wet outside after it rained one night. If you are looking for secluded, this is the place for you. We saw a couple of other boats on the lake during the week, but other than that it was like we were the only people on the whole lake. The fishing was great, and also you could easily catch crayfish off the dock which our 6 year old loved. We also had our dog with us, and she would've played in the water all day if we let her. The dock looked brand new, and there was also a small sandy area near the dock where you could wade into the water. The bottom is quite rocky, and a bit slippery, but with water shoes we were fine. I wouldn't really recommend this as a swimming beach, but even without that we found plenty to do at the lake (and we did spend a lot of time wading in the water). In fact, we had originally planned a few day trips, but we ended up canceling most of them because we were having so much fun at the cabin that we just hung out there most of the week. The cabin is quite remote - 20 minutes of winding gravel road to get there. We enjoyed it and felt it added to the adventure of it, but something to be aware of. Also, just fyi, we have AT&T and we got no service at the cabin. This is truly the perfect place for quality time with family - we enjoyed our time there very much. FYI if you’re interested, some of the nearby attractions (by nearby I mean <1.5 hours): Canyon Falls, Hilltop Restaurant, Bishop Baraga Shrine, Agate Falls, Bond Falls, Tibbets Falls, Lake Superior… I highly recommend this cabin, and hope to make it back up there again myself.
Wow, now that we think about it, Wow! What a beautiful place, with a spectacular view of Porter Lake. Everything that you could want for a quiet get-away. Quiet, peaceful mornings, great fishing, and wildlife of all kinds. There are a few dusty, bumpy roads to get there, but it’s all worth it.
Jim & Julie are perfect hosts. Julie visited in the middle of the week to make sure all was well, and came with a plate of fresh baked brownies. Yum! The boat with motor and gas, and the canoe are very nice. The cabin has received lots of loving care, and is equipped with everything you might need. Anyone wanting a peaceful place to spend a vacation in the U.P., this is it.
I’ve been coming to this area for many years, as my dad started coming here in the early 1940’s. It’s never been a disappointment. This is a first time visit for my wife, Sandy, and she loved it. I might add that our cat, Precious, loved the cabin, too.
