We bought this property in 1999 with the intent of building our dream home on a ridge looking towards Montana's Whitefish Range and Big Mountain ski resort. We did just that in 2001 and enjoy this spot we call 'Reeky Lum' (Gaelic for 'Smoking Chimney') very much. After 25 years in the Willamette Valley of Oregon with all of its hustle and bustle it just seemed right. And it is!
The Owner purchased this chateau / country house in 1999
This home was designed and built by the owners as a dream home. A place where family and friends gather and enjoy Montana. 'Reeky Lum' is truly unique in its solitude and peacefulness. The Whitefish area abounds with scenic beauty and civic pride. It is truly the 'Last Best Place'.
The snowmobiling possibilities from the front door are diverse and fantastic. If 'high marking' is your thing Red Meadow is about an hour away by snowmobile. Much of the trail is groomed to that point to meet the wants of the less wild group. Access to the top of Big Mountain is easy too. It is one of the few places in the country where machines and skiers can be together.
Down hill skiers from all over the world congregate on the slopes of Big Mountain.
Summer has its rewards too. Miles of hiking, mountain biking and outdoor activities in Big Sky country right from the front door.
I would like to thank you for allowing us to rent your home for our golf trip.
We were so pleased with the house --- wow, it had everything that we could think of! The weather was raining for our entire stay so we were not able to enjoy your deck but we certainly did enjoy the comfortable living area indoors. We were disappointed that we were unable to get outside and go for a walk around the area. We did see the morning and evening deer at the edge of the trees. Something us city gals don’t get to see every day. We loved the décor and we certainly had more space than we needed. It was everything and more than we expected…. I just can’t say enough good things about it.
Your directions were very clear and we did not have any trouble finding the house.
Thanks again and we hope to be able to rent it again.
A small mob (13 adults and two dogs) went to Whitefish for the Family Day weekend: our only prerequsite was a place where we could all stay together that was relatively near to the town and ski hill. Reeky Lum fit the bill, it is HUGE, beautifully decorated, and incredibly comfortable. It had plenty of beds for the couples (or if you have kids, plenty of places to hide them).
We had a fantastic time skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing in the backyard, and playing games around the large dining room table. In to town for dinner on Saturday night, we were pleased to find out it was only 20 minute drive (or $40 cab for 6 people for those requiring such info).
Needless to say, I would highly recommend this place to any large group of people.
Reeky Lum was everything promised and more! The house is beautifully decorated and well stocked with so many little extras. I had brought along some spices for cooking and discovered that I should have left them at home! The area itself was stunning Montana wilderness and so peaceful and quiet. One recommendation I have for Canadian visitors is to make sure you have milk upon arrival especially if arriving later in the evening and planning to have breakfast in the morning. I didn't think of it until we were well past Eureka and there was no where else to get a few groceries before arriving at Reeky Lum since it was still another 12 miles to Whitefish.
I highly recommend this beautiful home as a vacation destination.
Reeky Lum was great for our family because it slept 14 people. It is very spacious and has all the accommodation one might need I loved the privacy and spacious wooded area. It is not baby proof so if you have a toddler you will have to get some of the nice things out of reach. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Reeky Lum. We highly recommend it.
Glacier National Park excluding the Hydothermals is Yellowstone on steroids. The hikes were fantastic. The animal life was something else. We had 4 differant bear sightings. One very close to the car with great pictures. We also saw Big Horn Sheep, Mountain Goats, Bald Eagles, marmouts, deer and I am sure I left out some other critters. BTW there is a salt lick at Reeky Lum and we had a deer visit us every morning to get some licks.
Everything was great about Reeky Lum. The owner was very easy to deal with and the place was wonderful for our family. We would definitely return to this place. Thanks so much!
We returned to Reeky Lum in June and our experience was even better the second time. We were unable to use the deck and BBQ in 2011 because of rain but enjoyed the use of it this time. It is such a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the sun. The house was spotless and there are a wide variety of spices etc. in the cupboards. It is a wonderful home away from home. Thanks Betty and John for the use of your home.
Dog Sled rides, Sleigh rides, Summer ski-lift rides, Glacier National Park 35 minutes away. Consider Amtrak - Whitefish station stop on the famed "Empire Builder" is 15 minutes away from this home. Car rental is available from Hertz at the station.
Games and puzzles in large volume are supplied. The spacious deck allows outdoor BBQ and relaxation in the Montana paradise.
On-site walking trail system allows our guests to experience Montana to the fullest. In addition within a short walk is a trail head for "A Trail Runs Through It" system which allows miles of hiking on established trails. Check this system out at http://whitefishtrail.net/2011WT_TrailMap.pdf
Or, take a hike or snowmobile in the adjoining Stillwater State Forest. Again the opportunities are nearly endless.
