Imagine yourself 1 block off Periwinkle Way, the main road with the adjacent pedestrian-bike path, convenient to lots of amenities (shopping, restaurants, library, farmers' market, community theater, etc.) -- but virtually living in a nature preserve. That's what we offer, on a cul-de-sac with only 8 homes.
When we expanded this island cottage in 2008, and furnished it in a contemporary and colorful style, our priority was to create an open feeling inside to outside, so we could enjoy looking at the nature around us, and also a spacious open feeling inside. So we have lots of windows (almost all casement windows, which open fully for fresh air and breeze) and generously sized rooms (the 'Great Room': living-dining and dining area; the reading den jutting out on the front of the house; also the extra sitting room that expands the master bedroom).
We furnished this house for our own use, and we have now made it available for rental part of the year. There is original art work, and the kitchen is well-equipped (microwave, toaster, coffee maker, dishwasher, blender, bagel-cutter, many cooking implements, oh- not to mention the champagne glasses and cocktail shaker) with a nice pantry.
In general, the idea of this vacation home is as a base for the many activities on Sanibel -- friends have said it would be a perfect 'writer's retreat' or artist's retreat, or YOUR retreat. When we stay there, we have an active time (shelling on the beaches, birdwatching or looking for armadillos and alligators in the sanctuaries) or just relaxing at the house.

We have a somewhat unique history regarding Sanibel, since Jeff proposed to Maddy in the parking lot of the visitor center at the Ding Darling Nature Sanctuary. We finally bought this vacation house in 2007, and invested a lot of creative energy into making it a very comfortable retreat, a home where we refresh and re-energize.
Sanibel Island has many great beaches and bays, and when we visit we usually drive to several of them. So when choosing a house, we were pleasantly surprised to find one that was centrally located, but completely away from the busy-ness of Periwinkle Way. At times when we're not going to the beach or kayaking, we can walk to many activities.
Birdwatching is easy (osprey, woodpeckers, hawks, ibis and various small birds are seen on the property).
