Designated a historic landmark by the City of Austin, the c.a. 1937 Castle on the Hill is an excellent example of Moorish-influenced Mediterranean Revival architecture. An arcaded porch with steel framed casement windows extends along the front of the house; a smaller porch of identical design is located at the back. The open decks on top of the porches have decorative triangular stonework above the round-arched doorways, each containing a stone molding and semi-circular canopy with a stone facade.

Located three blocks from the popular entertainment district of South Congress Avenue (SoCo) and one block from Stacy Park, the Castle on the Hill is perfectly situated to meet all your needs! Please visit our Virtual Tour; the link is below.

The Castle on the Hill - behind the scenes: 'The John House,' or more commonly known by the local residents as 'The Castle on the Hill' was featured by the historic preservation committee for the Travis Heights Neighborhood Association for exemplifying the rich, historic architecture of South Austin.

The owner's residence is located in the historic stone cottage south of the main house. Owners are available to provide guests with suggestions on restaurant options, live music venues and much more!

The Tree House Suite is tucked away in the northwest corner of the house and is shaded by a canopy of trees just outside the bedroom windows. The Meditation Suite overlooks the front balcony to the east and the meditation pond to the north, creating a wonderful contrast to the city skyline just above the trees. The Fireplace Suite has the original fireplace and windows that overlook the south lawn and front balcony. Unique, beautiful house, great location!

The house is amazing! It was a treat to stay in such a unique historic property, in walking distance to the vibrant south Congress area or just a 5-minute cab ride to downtown. Our group of 5 cooked and ate breakfast together each morning in the beautiful kitchen/dining room and then chose from the list of great restaurants just blocks away for lunches and dinners. The neighborhood is quiet, full of trees complete with a greenbelt, a great place to walk off all the amazing meals we ate! Morning coffee on the porch was our favorite time of day, listening to the birds which seem to flock to this property. And the hosts were nearby and on-hand to give us suggestions or to answer questions if we had them. We felt very safe, everything taken care of and had a great time in Austin. This place is perfect for families or small groups looking for a quiet retreat (after a late night on the town, perhaps!).

Beautiful and well maintained house with original detail combined with classic minimalist design. Very large but well laid out with common space as well as private space. Grounds are well kept but charmingly natural so it doesn't feel overly manicured. Huge bonus for us was the location - a few blocks walk to S. Congress and the restaurants, cafes and clubs there (Continental Club, Homeslice, Uncommon Objects, etc.). Close to everything but quiet at night for sleeping. Didn't even need a car once we got there. Owners were responsive but hands off which is how we like it. Overall, 5 stars.

Gorgeous house, gorgeous neighborhood!

We stayed there 4 days. This is a beautiful and extremely we-maintained house, right in the middle of SoCo. The place is enormous, but retains its amazing historic charm - right down to the white tile work, historic light fixtures, and old fashioned tub!

Ian and Angela were amazing hosts...you couldn't ask for cooler people. Their knowledge of Austin is second to none.

We would definitely book it again...we're far from getting our fill of Austin!

Well, this was a stunner...

This was not just an awesome vacation home in a fantastic neighborhood, really... It was like taking a dreamy step back in time a bit. It's a big, beautiful historic house on a large tree-filled lot up on a hill, adorned in cozy and warmth but airy and bright, with a superb cool factor and the perfect amount of authentic creak in the floors. Lots of heart and old soul with just the right touch of modern. Perfect home away from home away from home!

The only place I EVER want to stay !!!

Words can't describe how wonderful the stay was! First, the home is gorgeous-- structurally it's stunning. It's beautifully decorated and well taken care of. The rooms are HUGE, the beds so comfortable, the bathrooms spa-like. The space is so inviting you never really want to leave!

Ian, the owner, was so lovely! He was very friendly and so accomodating. Staying here was worth every single penny and then some! I will most definitely be staying here the next time I'm in Austin :)
