Snorkling and Scuba: The Hideaway's private path leads to a private beach maintained by the Privateer Bay Homeowners Association. Snorkeling consists of a reef along the shore to the SE and the area surrounding Pelican Rock. A short walk or kayak away is Haulover Bay with awesome snorkeling on the Francis Drake Channel side. Privateer Bay Beach Association also maintains a beach, over the hill behind the Hideaway on Francis Drake Channel side. Crystal clear waters abound! The wreck of the Rhone, the Indians and the caves of Norman Island are a short distance away by boat.
Beaches: Along with the private beach maintained by PBHA at the end of the path from the Hideaway, the kayaks provide access to a myriad of beaches within Coral Bay. Beyond your beach, the closest beaches are Vie’s , Salt Pond, Francis Bay and Maho beach. The North Shore beaches are a short drive away as well…
Dining: On the East End, you have Vie’s Snack Shop and beach 3 minutes away and the renowned Skinny Legs is 8 minutes away. In Coral Bay you will find several choices for dining along with groceries at Cocolobo complex. Love City Market is also close for bottled water and smaller grocery needs. For larger grocery shops, you will want to go into Cruz Bay (30 minute drive 8 miles away) for shopping at Starfish, Dolphin or St. John market for food and beverage provisions, and Mongoose for interesting items. There is a list in the villa with restaurants noted. You might find, after visiting Cruz Bay and stocking up, there is no reason to leave the tranquility of the East End and the Hideaway.
This was our fourth stay at this wonderful villa! We love it, our adult children love it, and our friends who have joined us love it!!!
The owners are constantly improving the villa, and we look forward to seeing the changes each year. First, the driveway was paved, then steps were added to the beach path, and now there is a beautiful, wave-like stainless steel trellis.
The location is perfect for us. We enjoy the quiet and the privacy. The snorkeling is great at the beach below the house...either around Pelican Rock or along the reef near the shore directly to the left of the beach path. We usually snorkel somewhere else in the morning and then return to the house for relaxation before a late afternoon snorkel below the house. This year, we had an added treat because some of our friends were sailing in the area and were able to anchor near the house for a few days...adding sailing to our activities.
This villa is very comfortable in addition to being beautiful! There is ample room for people to sit or stretch out and read in either sun or shade. Many houses do not actually have comfortable furniture for the maximum number of guests...but this one does!
The villa is spotlessly clean and very well-equipped. We enjoy cooking, and we have always found whatever we needed to cook a delicious dinner. The location is relatively remote, and we prefer cooking at home to driving at night.
I saw the negative review...and that inspired me to write again to counter that review with our experience which has been totally great.
St John is a beautiful island with a lot of rental villas that are similar with air-conditioning, better locations and much better service without being mistreated at the end!
When I saw that my security deposit check was cashed after we came back, I was surprised but not concerned. I was sure there was some explanation. When I contacted the owner, I was told that the check was cashed because we left garbage in the house and had a dishwasher service call!
While we did leave some garbage, all bottles were gathered in carton box in the kitchen for easy removal (I forgot to ask about recycling) and on the day of the departure, it was raining quite hard. We just did not think about the garbage. What was left behind was a carton of wine bottles and a half-day worth of garbage in the garbage bin in the kitchen.
When the dishwasher did not start, we called house help who never came to check on it. After washing dishes by hand several times, we called again and a service call was made.
At no point were we told that we could be liable for this service. The dishwasher had worked intermittently since we arrived. Ultimately, I was charged for garbage removal and for the service call (in addition to cleaning fee).
While we did have a good time and the villa was well equipped, the treatment at the end negated anything positive I had to say about the villa. There was no one to greet us and to show us around when we arrived; no one came when we asked for with the dishwasher; one kayak was leaking. It was very hot and the fans not powerful enough to really help.
After I had paid in full for the villa, I got a letter from Christine about cleaning bird droppings so as not to attract the bats that had invaded the property. Had I received this letter (and we exchanged quit a few, I always make thorough investigation and ask lots of questions) at time of inquiry, I would have thought twice about staying in a villa that collects a cleaning fee, but requires quests to clean bird droppings from the pool and property.
We have been renting villas for over 10 years, on average about 3 times a year. We love St John and it was our 3rd time on the island (different villa every time, all in quiet areas). Our group consisted of 3 couples, old college friends, now residing in different countries.
The Hideaway is exactly that - a chance to hide away from the world and relax and recharge. We spend a wonderful week with family, enjoying time with each other in a way that just isn't possible at home. The villa had everything we needed - a great kitchen, fabulous (covered) outdoor spaces for relaxing, reading, talking, and dining. The pool was a great way to get refreshed after a day of snorkeling. After a day outdoors enjoying the island I slept like a teenager.
At home we're always plugged in. Here we felt no need to. The only time we turned on the TV was to watch part of the Super Bowl.
The snorkeling at the local beach was great. A day trip to Waterlemon Cay to snorkel out around a little island was the best day ever - great coral, rays, turtles, and more fish than you can imagine. Other day trips were equally fun.
When we weren't cooking we dined at Skinny Legs, Pinks, and Vera's. The little local spots were much more interesting and fun than the fancy places in Cruz Bay. Talking to locals made me feel like I was in a Jimmy Buffet song.
Next time we come we'll know to stock up on groceries at Cruz Bay. Food shopping in the East End is somewhat limited.
We have been back home in Dallas for several weeks and are still talking about our fantastic vacation in St. John and our happy discovery of The Hideaway.
This home is like staying at your friend with the fabulous taste's house rather than at a "beach rental." If you appreciate quality and understated luxury then this is your place. From the Cutco knives to the Kohler sinks...(I notice these things) no expense was spared in the building and furnishing of this lovely home. Each outdoor space is perfectly situated to share the magnificent views and at the same time affords privacy for a large family.
Our daily routine was up and out early - scouting local beaches - then back home in the afternoon for snorkeling at our own beach. I am particularly fond of the sea turtles. We also saw a big sting ray and countless colorful Finding Nemo fish!
For dinner we would either head to Skinny Legs or Shipwreck or cook at home and dine under the stars by candlelight.
If you travel a lot and particularly if you have rented houses on vacation then you know that sometimes the photos are nicer than the house. At the Hideaway, the photos don't even begin to capture the beauty of the house or the views.
We will return. The Thomas Family
“The Hideaway” is exactly that, a hideaway. When I first arrived and entered through the outdoor covered sitting room I was struck by the expansive view coupled with the complete privacy. It is the perfect place to have long conversations and connect on a new level with your traveling mates. As an incurable “news junkie” I rarely unplug but at the Hideaway I was never tempted to touch the television and rarely checked email.
Life is easy and breezy at the well-equipped Hideaway. A short private trail leads to a cove teaming with turtles and beautiful fish. For those like myself who prefer shade on the beach there are trees to offer that protection. An outdoor shower and drying racks make it easy to unload beach supplies at the end of the day. I particularly appreciated the gentle ocean breeze that flowed across my bedroom from one beautiful French door through the one on the opposite side of the room.
This is one special villa. Pictures are accurate, but without the third dimension, you don't quite get the "wow!" Rooms not pictured are equally tasteful.
East End: this was our first stay on this part of the island, and it was nice to find the quiet of St. John like times gone by. However, it is a "trip" to get there; some may find it overly tedious (even more-so after dark.) We are seasoned travelers to St. John; therefore, we knew what to expect. We shopped for groceries and beverages en mass to avoid the need to return to Cruz Bay. (Could have used a Costco for the week!) Dinners out were limited to the Coral Bay venues, which still required 15- 20 minutes drive time each way - plenty of great choices. Still, the location has huge rewards: totally private, quiet, and an easy walk on property to an almost private beach. There are a number of options for morning walks, sans the vehicle traffic confronted on other parts of the island. Great place to watch the sun set over Bordeaux Mountain. The stars at night are simply amazing. No light pollution here.
The house: In our opinion, this villa definitely trumps the chore in getting there. Beautifully designed, tastefully furnished, but not over the top or fussy...so easy to be comfortable here. Fantastic outdoor living room, ample outdoor lounge seating, great pool. Comfy beds. The kitchen has everything you need. Clean, clean clean! Only drawbacks: 1 - not really a negative, but a consideration for some - twins in second bedroom can not be converted to a king. 2 - no A/C. We've never needed to use it on St. John, and don't really like it. However, this year was the first time for us that bugs were an issue...not related to the villa's location as much as a rainy winter last year. Screens were only partially successful in keeping out the tiny gnats and mosquitoes. Keeping the house dark was the best defense. With A/C, we would have probably closed up the bedrooms at night ... reluctantly.(I hear A/C will be installed in the future.) 3 - no WIFI. Only one of us in the group could access data on a smartphone. AT&T seemed the most reliable for phone service at the house. But, hey! You're on vacation. My husband returned to say he felt more relaxed than any other trips to the island ...maybe because he wasn't in constant contact with work. Hooray!
Property Management: Athena is a gem. Loved meeting, and talking with her. She will do anything to help out during the vacation.
