About John Hikade

John and Beth Hikade moved to Blue Hill in the 1970's. They opened the award winning Fire Pond restaurant at that time and stayed in the restaurant business until the early 80's when they started their family. John then turned his focus towards carpentry and became a well known restorer of beautiful the old homes that are so prevalent in the Blue Hill area- their current restaurant is perhaps his greatest masterpiece yet. When their children were older John and Beth decided to start a new restaurant called Arborvine, which in its 13 years has won many awards, and gained the same stellar reputation that the Fire Pond had all throughout New England.

John Hikade purchased this apartment in 1998

Why John Hikade chose Blue Hill

When John and Beth purchased the building next door to the restaurant they knew they had their work cut out for them. With John's amazing carpentry skills and help from his 2 sons, the simple old doctors office next door was turned into a beautiful office space which is home to a local graphic design company (Borealis Press) and a gorgeous luxury apartment located in the center of Historic Blue Hill Village. Renters have found Blue Hill to have everything they are looking for from hiking, to dining and shopping, all right on the amazing Downeast Maine Coast.

What makes this apartment unique

During the summer months you have the convenience of 2 restaurants just across the white fence- The Arborvine with its award winning fine dining, or the more casual Deep Water BrewPub with Craft Beers, outside seating and a Pub style menu. There are fantastic farmer's markets held several times a week in town, plus wonderful local events like street dances with the local Steel Band, plays by the community theater companies, fairs, festivals, and of course the coast of Maine just waiting to be explored.

The cooler months bring a relaxed slower pace to the community. See Acadia national Park on skis, dine and shop. Many of the local shops and restaurants are still open, but you can also stay in and cook and curl up with a good book in front of the fire and watch the snow fly!

Great Apartment in Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed putting down roots for 2 weeks in late Aug/early Sept in a town we've enjoyed visiting for 22 years. The Apartment at Arborvine had everything we needed and was in a great location for taking advantage of local attractions we had not previously explored: Thuya Gardens at Acadia, ferry to Isle au Haut with bike rental, local heritage trail hikes (guide available at Blue Hill Books), kayaking (Activity Shop rents), concert at Kneisel Hall, carry-out steamed lobsters from Northern Bay Market in Penobscot, movie at Stonington Opera House, lunch outside at the Bagaduce Lunch, special wine-pairing dinner at Blue Hill Inn. Blue Hill has a terrific public library and an exceptional independent book store. Good shopping in all the local towns, including a wonderful wine shop in Blue Hill. The apartment owners made sure we had everything we needed and were very warm and welcoming. The kitchen is very well equipped, the apartment is upscale and comfortable and clean as a whistle, and the setting is quiet and peaceful. The grounds are well-kept and lovely. Arborvine is one of our favorite fine dining restaurants, and the Deep Water Brew Pub was handy to have next door to the apartment. I highly recommend this apartment.

Perfect for two

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at The Apartment at Arborvine was perfect. John and Beth have thought of everything. The apartment is quiet, clean, and beautifully appointed. We toured the brewery and sampled several of Deepwater's offerings. All were delicious. Later that evening we had dinner at the brew pub. Fresh local food expertly prepared.

Blue Hill Village is about 45 minutes from Acadia and Bar Harbor. It is quaint and a perfect escape from the crowds and traffic. We will definitely return.

Great find in the ideal location

  • 5 of 5

I had the pleasure of staying at this apartment for a week in July - while I knew the area and expected it to be convenient, it turned out to be truly ideally situated, not only to the best fine dining restaurant in Blue Hill, Arborvine (and a great brewpub as well!), but within walking distance of the village, the grocery, the ocean...I could go on. Hop in your car and you are at the center of incredible locales such as Acadia, Bar Harbor, Deer Isle, Stonington, Castine...all very easy trips within reach as well as proximate to Bangor/Ellsworth. If you are exploring Maine and want a fantastic spot from which to do it, this is the place. The apartment has some of the best interior work I've seen in a rental, it's quiet, has a modern kitchen and you're right in town to get started on your day's adventure. Owners are available when you need them and very responsive (and are also proprietors of said great restaurant noted above). All you need is good Maine weather to make your trip complete! Would definitely come back.

Luxurious apartment in a gorgeous region

  • 5 of 5

John and Beth provide the home base for the perfect Maine vacation experience. We echo all positive reviews of the apartment, an excellent value for the area. But we did not realize when we booked the variety and high quality of activities we would have access to so close by. We extended our stay a week and would have extended another if we could! Great food? Walk no further than across the parking lot to the Arborvine or DeepWater Brew Pub. Cool shops and more? Just a short walk and fine Maine crafts, fun gifts and an excellent bookstore - Blue Hill Books. Culture? Chamber Music Concerts and free admission to observe Master Classes at Kneisel Hall just a four minute drive away. Sailing? We enjoyed two fabulous sunset sails on the Guildive out of Castine. Kayaking? Excellent sea kayaking school, again in Castine. Hiking? Blue Hill Mountain closely or Acadia National Park just an hour drive. Crafts? Visit the Haystack Mountain School for Crafts on Deer Isle. The village of Blue Hill and the surrounding area offer so much, we can't wait to return.

A home away from home

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this Blue Hill apartment from 6/5/14 to 6/21/14. It is a wonderful location for day trips to Acadia National Park, the Blue HIll Heritage Trails, Camden, Bar Harbour and the many charming towns on the peninsula.

It was a real pleasure to return to the apartment each day not only for its comfort but also for its aesthetics. We were impressed with the craftsmanship of the remodeling of the apartment and the decor. The photos truly depict the space. The Hikades quickly responded when we had questions.

The Arborvine restaurant and the Brew Pub, across the parking lot were so convenient for dinner. Both offer excellent food and great service. Also, the Barncastle restaurant offered excellent food in a casual atmosphere. The supermarket nearby had everything one needed for eating in. We also liked the two deli type restaurants in town.

Check on concerts offered at the Congregational Church across the street. We went to one offered by four of the voice faculty from the University of Maine. A very nice evening. Also check on what might be offered at the Grand Theatre in Ellsworth.

We watched John and his sons putting on the finishing touches on the tasting room of their brewery. Unfortunately, we had to leave before the grand opening.

Without reservation, I would recommend this VRBO. I hope to return to do the same things we did this trip but in the autumn of the year. This is where I would stay again.
