The 'Cottage at Sunset Cove' is a fabulous oceanfront property located on private grounds that are fenced with gated-only access 5 minutes from Mendocino Village. It is oceanfront, completely isolated, and has 2 acres of flowering gardens and walking paths, with parking on site. The shingled cottage/bungalow, which is entered through a rose covered archway, is an intimate hideaway. It is decorated like a 'country bungalow' in soothing blues and whites. Stone floors are covered with comforting area rugs, the sofa has down pillows, and a bistro table holds your welcome basket. The owners have decorated with artifacts from their travels, and have included in the cottage their love of classical literature and music, and local artwork. There is a beautiful gas fireplace and a completely separate bedroom with luxurious linens. Windows overlooking the gardens and ocean are large and everywhere. You can go to sleep with the calming sound of crashing waves on the double cove inlets. Peaceful and quiet, the area is a treasure trove for discovering wildlife - deer, wild turkeys, hawks, whales, blue herons, seals, porpoises, geese, and the occasional Orca. Russian Gulch State Park and Point Cabrillo Light House are less than 1 mile away, where nature walks abound. Mendocino Village, designated an official historical town circa the 1870's, is just 2 miles away, with wonderful restaurants and pubs, hidden garden paths for strolling, and specialty shops.
The cottage has a separate bedroom with large closets, luxury linens and 6 down pillows, living room with fireplace, queen-sized pull-out sofa bed, 2 comfortable reading chairs, and French bistro table. Teak reading chairs overlook the 2-sided deck and spa. There is also a large outside table and gas BBQ for cooking. The separate kitchen has dishes, glasses, pans and other cooking necessities and specialty items, and is stocked with beer, wine, bottled water, jams, coffee, tea and condiments. A basket of 'goodies' is added for late night snacks. Music, videos, books, games, binoculars will enhance your entertainment options. Bathroom has a powerful shower and a deep soaking tub with views of the gardens. Extra large windows from both the bedroom and the living room look directly out onto the ocean through the gardens, and are adjoined by a large deck with your own hot tub and seating for viewing the water and nature. Private gardens with paths surround the property and reading benches are sprinkled throughout the acreage. Best of all, there are sunsets 365 days a year (excluding rainy days, of course!) and you can view them all!
Because of the proximity to the ocean, this property is not suitable for children under 14.

Jerry and Cathy Karabensh have lived in Mendocino for 15 years, are retired, and enjoying life so much in the area that they want to share their view of the world with others. They have 2 dogs, and invite you to bring yours along.
Cathy Karabensh purchased this cottage in 2000
Sunset Cove is actually 2 coves with black sand beaches when the tide is out. The property is cliffside, so you can see white water crashing on the rocks below. Most of the year you can see the waterfall that spills out into Sunset Cove. The Cottage is set nestled in a banquet of bushes along the north, keeping your deck and hot tub wind-free from the northwest winds that are typical of the area.
Private, tranquil, and romantic, The Cottage is traditionally decorated in seaside colors, more like a home than a hotel. The Karabensh's have included memorabilia from their extensive travels as well as books, movies, and an array of helpful holiday treats. Your own private hot tub awaits your leisure usage at any time.
Hubby and I stayed four nights, celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. Over the years we've been to a myriad of vacation rentals, choosing them over hotels for so many reasons. The Cottage at Sunset Cove is by far the most incredible property ever - inside, outside, all around. It was not only exactly as represented, it is more magnificent in person. The grounds are stunning, the decor is fantastic - local art, beautiful artifacts from worldly travels. From the so very well-equipped kitchen to the Turkish towels, the over-sized windows with fabulous ocean views, the welcome basket of goodies, the ever so comfortable bed and luxurious linens, the Cottage does not disappoint! We never left the property - four nights, four sunsets, four sunny days, four moonlit starry nights (three in the hot tub), four days of homemade meals, four days of heaven!
We stayed in October for 3 nights. The cottage was exactly as described. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the cottage was immaculate. Luke's Walk is extra special...a 2 minute stroll to the water's edge and the waves crashing against rocks. It rained one day and we decided to enjoy the rain from the cottage. It was comfortable and cozy. Huge picture windows give you a nice view of the ocean but you need to take the short walk to see the waves and rocks. There are many places to hike around the area. The location is perfect. So close to Mendocino. Russian Gulch State Park is in the same area. Fort Bragg is a short drive away. The hosts are very gracious and give you plenty of privacy.
Wonderful weekend stay – perfect location for unplugging for a few days or as headquarters while you're in the area for kayaking, hiking, etc. Terrific hospitality and a cottage stocked with everything you need. We loved the stars, the hot tub, and the sound of the ocean!
I surprised my husband with an anniversary trip to Mendocino and decided to book the Cottage at Sunset Cove. Wow! It surpassed every expectation and every wishful hope I had. My husband commented over and over what a perfect hideaway the cottage was. We have stayed in a lot of nice vacation rentals but this cottage surpasses them all. Cathy is a gracious and accommodating host. The grounds are breathtaking. The cottage itself is nothing short of perfect - peaceful, cozy, fully stocked, and simply relaxing. I don't think it gets any better than The Cottage at Sunset Cove. Bliss.
The cottage feels like home from the moment you arrive. Kathy provides a lovely goody basket with wine and treats. It is so inviting and relaxing. The cottage is well equipped with everything that you may need. The views and the gardens are amazing. There are so many things to do in the area, but it's really hard to leave the cottage. Plan to spend a couple extra days more than you think you need for touring the area so you can just relax at the cottage.
My husband and I with our 3 pugs and old english bulldog stayed 5 nights Thanksgiving this year. From the lovely gift basket upon our arrival to the beautiful ocean views with sunsets that are unbelievable, this cottage is amazing. It is clear from the moment you walk in the front door that the Owners take great pride and care to make this home away from home special. Artwork, unusual collectibles and books adorn the cottage, a comfy bed with down comforter, your very own bathrobes, can it get any better! We love this place.
