You drive some two hours on the Hana Highway, one of the USA’s most renowned roads, crossing about sixty bridges as you wind along the scenic crags of Haleakala marveling at the waterfalls and looking down on the wide ocean. This spectacular journey takes you to the best place in the world, in our view. Our beaches—there are six of them, all quite different—are never crowded, our ocean and mountain views are everywhere superb, our people delightful, our rain forest is fascinating and our climate perfect. The spiritual feeling of old Hawai’i is hard to find nowadays, yet it permeates Hana, far from tourist hordes. But, if you are looking for a happy place to stay in Hana, you probably know all that already; and that a day trip is not enough. So here’s why to ring us to check out Kolea Cottage as your comfortable, competitively priced, Hana base for a few days or weeks.
Kolea, timber-built in 2003, (permit t20120005) is located a mile from Hana's tiny airport on the lower slopes of the 10,000 foot Mount Haleakala, surrounded by lawn carved out of the forest in a secluded corner of our fruit farm. Our 11-acre estate is bursting with flowers, fruit trees and tropical plants of many sorts. Guests are welcome to fruit from our trees, flowers from the garden and books from our library to read while listening to CDs of Hana musicians or the dawn and dusk bird chorus, enjoying the ocean view from the lanai.
Kolea’s principal bedroom has a queen bed, the second bedroom twin beds or king bed. Soft linen and towels are provided. Bathroom with tub. Covered lanai with seating. In total, 1,200 sq ft of comfortable home. The kitchen area, which has plenty of storage and a separate pantry, oven, microwave, blender, and ice-making fridge, is fully equipped with cooking and dining things. The washer and drier are in a closet off the lanai. Kolea has Time Warner cable connected to a 32” flat-screen color TV, CD/DVD player, telephone, internet and wi-fi. Any special requirements—give us a call and we will do our best.
We will on request provide snorkeling gear and beach towels, and we can guide you on the eating possibilities, hiking and many things to do around Hana, including special local events which are often not much publicized. None are more than a short drive away.
Kolea Cottage is named for the beautiful bird that owns the cottage lawn, otherwise known as the Hawaiian golden plover. You may meet her if you are here in the right season, for this remarkable navigator puts on her best plumage and departs in the spring to fly 3,000 miles across the ocean for a summer in Alaska, where she raises a family before returning accurately to our yard in the fall.
The owners of Kolea Cottage are developing a fruit farm in Hana after many years sailing the Pacific Ocean and circumnavigating the world. Having seen a thousand islands, they have found the finest possible place to drop anchor.
Please note that we only offer single-night reservations when they fit with existing bookings or sometimes within 30 days.
Peace and quiet with adventure if you like in the most Hawaiian place on the Islands.
The accommodations were great and this place is as described. Andrew was a fantastic host and went way above and beyond our expectations to ensure we had a great trip and stay in Hana. We have rented many times over the years and the service we had from Andrew truly was second to none. We would highly recommend renting from them.
We had a great time in Hana and this house was a great base. Clean and nice furniture. Wished coffee pot and jacuzzi worked. Great view of stars at night
Hana is an extraordinary piece of old Hawaii, nothing like the resort areas on West and South Maui. It is also NOT a day trip. Hana deserves much longer. So for the second time, our family of 4 stayed three nights in Hana. We chose Kolea Cottage both times.
This VRBO property is perfect for us with the 2 BR layout (twin beds in one room). It is in the tropics, and on part of a tropical fruit farm, which defines its best and worst features. We just love the wildness, quiet, and diverse living things at this location. However, if you are not amused by indoor geckos, this is not the place for you.
The house is very clean and has a good kitchen but be aware that this is the tropics, and the ants are unforgiving if you do not keep everything as clean as it was when you arrived.
Favorite things about this property: Nightime rainfall on the roof, marvelous, dark skies for star gazing, proximity to all the Hana sights, family-friendly layout, gorgeous patio.
We loved this place. It was clean and equipped. We liked the unusual round roof. it rained the first night we were there and the sound of the rain on the roof and the lush plants was wonderful.
Great place to stay.
We had a wonderful two days here. So nice to come to Hana and stay, not just drive back the same day. We did some wonderful hikes that wouldn't have been possible as a day trip. Best of all was just sitting on the porch sipping wine and watching an evening shower, listening to the sounds and smelling the smells. And eating the papaya we harvested from the tree five feet from the front door. The kids loved hanging out.
