Located in a traditional 19th century apartment building, in the heart of the Left Bank’s 5th arrondissement, this one bedroom apartment has been completely renovated. The apartment offers a separate bedroom with a full-size bed and closet space, one bathroom with bathtub/shower and toilet, full-size fold-out sofa in the living room, a dining area with table and 4 chairs, kitchen, and a balcony filled with plants such as lavender, clematis, and jasmine.
The apartment is sunny with direct light in the afternoon. The living room overlooks the street with two doors leading out to the balcony, which stretches the entire width of the apartment. There is an elevator for those worn out by the daylong walks.
The apartment is located about 10 minutes by foot from the Luxembourg Gardens, the palace built in 1612 for Marie de Medici, and the Pantheon, the final resting place for all of France’s most famous citizens.
The RER train lines, which provide direct access to both Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports, are less than 10 minutes by foot or 2 bus stops from the apartment.
Besides the central Paris location of the apartment, the real plus of this apartment is the market on rue Mouffetard, less than 5 minutes away by foot. Rue Mouffetard is Paris’ oldest street, and was once the direct route out of Paris to Rome. The food market, created by the monks who came to this area in the 12th century to sell their produce, still thrives today, and in contrast to many of Paris’ other food markets, which are held twice weekly, rue Mouffetard is open six days a week, closed only on Mondays. For anyone who loves French food, or wants to prepare some of their own meals, this is the place to shop.
At the head of this narrow cobblestone market street is Place de la Contrascarpe, often referred to in Hemingway’s Moveable Feast, which he wrote when living less than a block from this simple square.
The ‘Mosquée de Paris’ is only five minutes away by foot, and still operates as a Muslim temple. Its hammam is open twice per week for men and women (separate days for each), and is a hidden treasure when it comes to soothing sore ‘I can’t walk another step’ muscles.
The Sorbonne University is less than a five minute walk away, so the neighborhood is filled with France’s best and brightest minds, and though one would think it had long since disappeared, these same students can be heard today, arguing politics, in the small and inexpensive cafes nearby.
