Overview

Boothbay Harbor Estate Rental Photos and Description

House, 5 Bedrooms, 4 Baths (Sleeps 9 in beds; 11 with pullout couch)

Come away from it all....catch your breath.

Six miles from the bustle of Boothbay Harbor is a peaceful waterfront retreat, set among rolling fields, meandering stone walls and richly colored perennial gardens........imagine a place that evokes your fondest memories....and brings your vacation dreams to bold colorful life....

The estate consists of four New England-style buildings: the main Farmhouse and historic, 200 year-old Homer Jones barn; a centrally-located garden shed, surrounded by gardens; a charming, renovated 1800s Cape and the Gallery Barn.

The Antique Cape combines new convenience with its historical heritage, with an exterior wrap-around porch and dormers, and a private back deck with great views of the shady woodland, home of the reclusive Lady Slipper, the apple orchard and the Gallery Barn. Inside, the first floor holds a comfortable, fully-equipped kitchen, dining room and living Room, all set off with the original pumpkin pine flooring, and furnished with antiques. There is also a first floor bedroom, the Garnet which has a Full-sized bed, and private bath. The Garnet and living rooms face the courtyard, the Farmhouse and the river. A cozy computer nook at the top of the stairs also faces the courtyard and is one of the best spots to pick up the WiFli.

On the second floor are four additional bedrooms with three private baths. The Ruby Peridot suite, a Queen bed in the Ruby room, with a fancy French door leading into the Peridot, twin room, share the Ruby Peridot bath. The Turquoise, with a Full oak sleigh-bed, facing across the Back River Road to nine acres of woodlands, also with private bath. And the third, the Butterscotch Amber bedroom, with two twin beds, its own sitting room and with the unique bath with both clawfoot tub and shower.

Wake to birdsong in the apple trees and early morning fog on the Back River....then make yourself delicious coffee and a hearty, healthy breakfast in the fully-equipped kitchen in the recently renovated 1800s Cape.

Wander 15 acres of gardens and woodland trails....borrow an inflatable boat to paddle with local seals....enjoy games, ride bikes, meet our friendly bald eagles and other critters.....watch the Maine painted turtles or listen to frogs on the freshwater pond......wander the park-like grounds.....take a cool dip or a sail on the river....

Refreshed, venture out into the Boothbay region to join a tour boat to see whales or puffins, or to go lobstering, shop, view our many art galleries, try some local restaurants and generally have a memorable visit. The Coastal Maine Botanical Garden is only 4 miles away! Or try hiking at any of the 13 preserves within 10 miles of this home.

At the end of the day, imagine coming ‘home’ to a snack and drink on the wrap-around porch....a good book in the hammock.....a sunset through the windows....and a long, delicious sleep in one of your five lovely bedrooms with four private baths, colorful bedding, paddle fans, cable TV, WiFli.

Or come home to a peaceful evening in one of your five elegant bedrooms with private bath, colorful bedding, paddle fans, cable TV, WiFli....in the Farmhouse across the courtyard.

When the buildings are not rented to vacation rental guests, they are offered in the B&B style...in either case, it's the perfect destination for a personal retreat, family or school reunion, wedding or other gathering event. See more by googling Bold Colorful Life Estate and Retreat Center.

Renewed again, live your bold and colorful life! Both buildings available year-round.

About Melissa Thornton, Owner

I’ve been saving for my ‘dream house’ for 40 years....and I fell in love with kayaking about 8 years ago. After a five year search through waterfront properties in CT, the Adirondacks, MA, NH and finally ME, this was the property that offered the combination of things I'd been seeking. And it was perfect for building vacation rentals so that the awesome environment could be shared.

The setting is idyllic with fields, woods, old stone walls, apple trees, lilac trees and many perennial gardens wandering down to the Back River. There are 15 acres of land, facing west for sunsets, on the protected waterfront of Maine and with a big freshwater pond and woodlands. The whole estate sits atop Maine ledge, which is sculpted to fall gently towards the water.

It's in an area where I am able to offer weekend and week-long retreats that combine personal growth, spirituality and 'back to nature' events, including hiking, paddling and exploring the nearby Botanical Gardens. And I want to share this beauty with as many people who love Nature and the wild, wonderful aspects of Maine as possible...so vacation rentals are the perfect answer.

Melissa Thornton, Owner purchased this estate in 2006

Why Melissa Thornton, Owner chose Boothbay Harbor

The Boothbay peninsula offers the perfect getaway. The area is naturally breath-taking, with forests and fields, farms and gardens, brash rocky coastline and gentle coves and lakes. Boothbay Harbor is a charming town with lots of engaging activities and it’s just six miles down the road. This is the area to go shopping, visit galleries and craft fairs, sample local fare at great restaurants, enjoy deep water activities like whale watching and lobster-boating.

And there are natural bonuses: 13 nature preserves for hiking within 10 miles---5 within 5 miles---one within 1/2 mile; a major Botanical Garden within 4 miles; kayaking possibilities in rivers and lakes and the Atlantic.

The Rockland/Camden area and Freeport shopping are within an hour's drive in either direction; and my favorite Maine park, Acadia National Park is two plus hours away. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward island, both favorite parts of Canada, are nearby too……..

What makes this estate unique

The Bold Colorful Life Gallery offers colorful elegant jewelry, stunning natural photographs, and dramatic works of art in oil and pastel to our rental guests...when it's open. The Bold Colorful Life Estate is also a Retreat Center, so plan to join us for a Retreat for personal growth, renewal and spiritual centering...

The Perfect Maine Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Hi Melissa,

We wanted to write and tell you that we enjoyed our second stay at your Bold Colorful Life estate immensely. We hope to return again and again.

Last time, we loved the Farmhouse…the spacious, comfortable rooms, the wonderful 200 year old barn timbers in the Great room and the amazing view of the river. Everything was even better than the website pictures promised. Our daughter wanted to repaint our whole house in brighter colors after seeing what you did with your Inn! We enjoyed doing our crafts and having meals around that huge table….more than enough room for our 11 person group. The breezes off the river and all the paddle fans cooled the summer sun and the eagles and blue heron were a delight. The kitchen was so well equipped…there wasn’t a recipe we couldn’t create...and we made quite a feast. Thanks for giving us the tour and for answering our questions and needs along the way…it was good to have you nearby when we wanted you.

This time, it was the historic Cape, for our smaller group. Again, the colorful and whimsical rooms were SO comfortable and we got caught up on sleep…so important for our vacation. Our daughter brought a friend this time and they loved the cozy bunks and their own private bath. We love your wildflowers and the emerald green lawns between them, and we love all the stone benches and hammocks, in perfect spots for resting. We didn’t see the eagles, but loved the bullfrogs and the last of the tree frogs around the pond. Thanks again for giving us the perfect spot to gather with family members, catch up with each other and with rest, enjoy the beauty of waterfront Maine and of the Boothbay peninsula. We recommend the gardens, lighthouse tours, nearby hikes and downtown waterfront restaurants to your other guests. See you next year!

Owner's Response: We love the fact that each group arrives with a different set of goals for their visit…some come to explore and immerse themselves in the adventures of the area….some come to relax and recover and get themselves onto ‘Maine time’….others come to balance both…hustle and bustle some days and simply rest and relax the others. This was a group intent on deep rest and deep connection with each other…they were set to enjoy everything they came across…and we love it when a group falls in love with the site, makes it their own space and doesn’t feel the need to leave. This group immersed themselves in the quiet and beauty of Mother Nature…on the site and in the area…they enjoyed every nook and cranny of both of the buildings and of the estate, during their two visits …they cooked and feasted and wandered the peninsula a bit and then came ‘home’ again…and at the end of their visit, went on with their lives fueled with ‘bold and colorful’ energy. We look forward to having them return..they are part of our ‘greater family’.

The Gem of the Boothbay Area

  • 5 of 5

Wow! What a gorgeous find the Bold and Colorful Waterfront Cape is. It is perfect for a family reunion or for a reunion with friends. The Caper is absolutely gorgeous inside. It is also so beautifully furnished that you might never want to leave!! And we couldn't get over the beautiful property that the Inn and the Cape are on. We found that they represent the perfect Maine experience as they are next to woods, a fantastic lake for swimming and kayaking and close to delightful and interesting small towns. Every person in our group was able to experience all the activities (and the calm and quiet) that each hoped for and wanted in a holiday. This is truly the gem of the Boothbay area.

Charming, fun and relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect location for a girls' reunion! We had a wonderful time enjoying all that the area offers--spent a gorgeous afternoon at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, strolled the shops of Boothbay, feasted on a catered lobster bake arranged by the gracious owner, Melissa. The bedroooms at the Inn are bright and comfortable, breakfast was generous with lots of choices (fresh wild blueberries!), lots of room to spread out and enjoy this beautiful property. Right on the river--some of us kayaked, others just enjoyed sunning on the deck. The owner is an artist, and there is even a gallery where many of us purchased one-of-a-kind stone jewelry. All in all, a really great stay!

A much needed home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

This property is one of the best kept secrets in Maine. There are two houses which rent out as vacation rentals on this large estate right on the Back River, and the Cape was the home that fit us best. It's a real, historical Cape Cod house, built in the 1800s...the owner even showed us a photograph of the house with a Civil War officer sitting out front! And it's been completely renovated, so all the rooms are comfortable and cozy. The bedrooms are colorful and perky, there were plenty of bathrooms, three TVs with cable and we had easy access to WiFi to check emails...so it was a nice mix of history with modern conveniences. The kitchen is fully equipped. We cooked lobster twice during our stay, and grilled several other nights...and had all the implements we needed. We even spent an evening around the huge firepit making s'mores and telling stories.

The front porch was great for breakfast and we looked out at the river, the kids picked wildflowerss in the side yard, enjoyed the hammocks, set up the croquet set and generally relaxed and had a wonderful time. It was hard to leave the Cape to go out and explore the Boothbay peninsula, but that was worth it as well. Lots of adventures to be had in this area.

This place is an oasis, away from the stress and strain of modern life...definitely therapeutic. And Melissa helps make everything run smoothly. Thanks!
