About Melissa Thornton, Owner

I’ve been saving for my ‘dream house’ for 40 years....and I fell in love with kayaking about 8 years ago. After a five year search through waterfront properties in CT, the Adirondacks, MA, NH and finally ME, this was the property that offered the combination of things I'd been seeking.

The setting is idyllic with fields, woods, old stone walls, apple trees, lilac trees and many perennial gardens. There are 15 acres of land, facing west for sunsets, on the protected waterfront of Maine and with a big freshwater pond. The whole estate sits atop Maine ledge, which is sculpted to fall gently towards the water.

It's in an area where I am able to offer weekend and week-long retreats that combine personal growth, spirituality and 'back to nature' events, including hiking, paddling and exploring the nearby Botanical Gardens. And I want to share this beauty with as many people who love Nature and the wild, wonderful aspects of Maine as possible...so vacation rentals are the perfect answer.

The Boothbay peninsula offers the perfect getaway. The area is naturally breath-taking, with forests and fields, farms and gardens, brash rocky coastline and gentle coves and lakes. Boothbay Harbor is a charming town with lots of engaging activities and it’s just down the road. It's the place to go shopping, visit galleries and craft fairs, sample local fare at great restaurants, enjoy deep water activities like whale watching and lobster-boating.

And there are natural bonuses: 13 nature preserves for hiking within 10 miles---5 within 5 miles---one within 1/2 mile; a major Botanical Garden within 5 miles; kayaking possibilities in rivers and lakes and the Atlantic.

The Rockland/Camden area and Freeport shopping are within an hour's drive in either direction; and my favorite Maine park, Acadia National Park is two plus hours away. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward island, both favorite parts of Canada, are nearby too……..

  • The Ruby Peridot bathroom has an over-sized diamond-shaped shower and is decorated in the pink and green of the two rooms in the Suite. The Turquoise bathroom has a shower, as had the Garnet room on the first floor. The Butterscotch Amber bathroom has both a clawfoot tub and a shower. The tub looks out over the apple trees to the river. All baths have shiny barnboard and pumpkin pine floors.

  • The Ruby Peridot Suite is a two bedroom suite (one Queen room and one Twin) with an elegant French door with shades to allow privacy between rooms. Each bedroom has an entry door and they share the Ruby Peridot bath. Colors are crisp pink and peridot green, with shiny pumpkin pine floors. The views are of the apple trees, Barn Gallery and the Back River. The Turquoise room is a Standard/Full room with private bath. The views are of the courtyard, gardens and woods. The Garnet Room on the first floor is also a Standard/Full room with private bath and views of the courtyard, gardens and Back River.. Both have shiny pumpkin pine floors. The Butterscotch Amber Suite is a room with Twin beds, attached to a private bath on one end and a sitting room on the other. The bedroom and bath have shiny barnboard floors and the sitting room the original shiny pumpkin pine floors. Views include the apple trees, Barn Gallery, the woods and the Back River.

Melissa is the perfect hostess and Bold Colorful Life is the best location for our annual family Christmas.. We are a family of seven adult children and 15 grandchildren.. most from away.. so this was our second year of being lucky enough to meet here for our family holiday,
The dining table is the perfect place for holiday crafts, cookie making and the kitchen is perfect for our appetizer and dessert contest chefs.
The great room with the largest christmas tree we have ever seen, was perfect for relaxing, games or an evening of Karaoke..Yikes. The bedrooms are so comfortable and the kids love the fact they all have their own bathrooms! See you in 2013 Melissa!

Dear Melissa,
How can we begin to thank you for the most wonderful vacation we've had in a long time? It was exactly what we needed to relax and remember how life should be lived. We love the little house, and really enjoyed cooking and sharing meals outside. The views are spectacular! It was most important for me to spend time with my sons, swimming, boating and just sitting on the hammock and talking before they are off to their busy lives. These days have reminded me of the summers I spent as a child, my mother playing with us, my grandmother baking cookies or bread. What lovely memories. A beautiful spot for a wedding!!

My fiancee (now husband!) and I, along with our families, rented both the farmhouse and cape house on this property for a week in early September. At the end of the week, we had a small wedding in the back yard, overlooking the beautiful Back River. We simply could not have asked for a better setting for our wedding!! The property is absolutely lovely, and the view of the Back River from the farmhouse is breathtaking. The houses are bold, colorful, and beautiful, as is the proprietor, Melissa! With 9 bedrooms between the two houses (5 in the farmhouse and 4 in the cape), each with a private bathroom, this place would be perfect for any large group! Finally, the location of this property is perfect- close enough to Boothbay Harbor to easily pop into town for shopping or dinner, but far enough out of town to get away from the hubbub and enjoy some peace and quiet!

Melissa is warm and welcoming, and makes you feel like family from the moment you arrive. What a beautiful place for a vacation, and a wonderful way to start our married life! Thanks Melissa!

Gracious host, warm, comforting rooms, magnificent views

4 of my college friends and I stayed a long weekend at the Bold Colorful Inn and found it to be just as the pictures promised - welcoming and relaxing. We stayed in the main house not the Cape - but we got to view the Cape and it is charming. The Main House rooms were warm and comfortable, the jewelry and art gallery fascinating (we came away with many treasures), and the common area (part of which is a salvaged barn built inside the building with soaring ceilings) had a big table for dining, a well equipped kitchen, a gas fire, and a wall lined with books to read -- not to mention a fantastic piano for us to enjoy. Breathtaking setting - really the pictures are good, but the actual environs are amazing. The owner suggested a lobster bake which was easily arranged with a local establishment to have brought in one night and we had a great lunch in Boothbay the day of our departure. This is a not to miss spot. You have to check out the owner's story on how the Bold Colorful Inn came to be.
