Quiet neighborhood, great place to stay while visiting Big Bend and nearby places ...

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time visiting Marfa, Big Bend, McDonald's Observatory, Balmorhea State Park, all day trips from the house. It was neat and cozy. Had a fully stocked kitchen, a washer (no dryer), two full baths with showers meant to quickly get in/get out type (meaning, hot water runs out quickly :). However something needs to be done about the showerheads or maybe it is due to lack of water pressure. That is my only complaint! And although a single story house - each room seems to be on a different level (step here and a step there) - will take a little getting used to. Also you can park outside or you have to move the wire mesh to park inside. Mosquitoes and houseflies got in - although we are were conscious about closing the doors behind us. But this is summer and we are in Texas. It is to be expected. Again I am not taking any stars for these - that is this house's character. Great house. Whoever gets to stay there will I am sure like it as we did.

Erin was awesome. Called back promptly every time. And yes, we will definitely stay there again the next time we are in that area.

Owner's Response: we are so glad you enjoyed your stay!! I wish we could do something about the bugs!! The house was originally a one-room adobe structure and the family that owned it (a hundred odd years ago) added on rooms as needed, hence the rooms being on slightly different levels. We think that it adds to the charm of the house!! Let us know if you'd like to book again and thank you for your review!

Weekend getaway

This house is excellent. The location and gardens are wonderful. We had a party of 5 for 2 nights. 2 nights was not enough. You can walk to almost anything you would want to see or do in downtown Alpine. Some folks complained about the train noise but it did not bother us a bit.

Great House

  • 4 of 5
The Historic Adobe House in Alpine accommodated all of my family during Spring Break. The bedrooms were as described and the house had lots of room so no one felt crammed in. The kitchen was fully equipped and had a few extras, such as a crock pot. Overall we enjoyed our stay. Just wish the flowers and trees had bloomed out and we could have enjoyed the garden more. Just too early in the Spring to enjoy those amenities.

We were not told nor was the information on the VRBO website that this house is only two blocks from the railroad tracks that run through Alpine. There were MORE than several trains that came through each night blowing their horns all the way through town which led to being woken up nearly every hour between 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. This situation led to not very restful nights after long days of sight seeing. It would have been nice to know how close the house was to the train tracks before we rented it. We would have picked another location so that we got a good nights sleep.

Lovely House; Charming Town

  • 4 of 5
This guesthouse is lovely, eclectic, and charming. It is a jewel plunked down in its rather rundown neighborhood. We (four adults) quickly adjusted to that little disappointment because the house is so close to everything. We enjoyed visiting Fort Davis, Balmorhea State Park, the Observatory, and went to several of the concerts at the Cowboy Poetry Gathering at Sul Ross University. We had no contact with the owner during or after our visit, even though I had emailed her a couple of times. It would have been nice to have had a Guest Sheet explaining things about the house--outdoor lights, bikes, dryer location--and maybe restaurant recommendations. We loved the town of Alpine, found the locals to be very friendly, and thoroughly enjoyed our 5-day stay.

Great location, walking distance to main street with shops, restaurants, entertainment. Kitchen/dining area large enough for group. Two sitting rooms. Very large outdoor area with lights, fire pit, and several tables and chairs on patio, porch and grounds. Modern bath rooms. Manager, Erin, very friendly and helpful with suggestions on local sites.

We had a wonderful time despite the cold and icy weather. This is a beautiful house and garden, convenient to downtown so we didn't mind being confined to the house when the icy weather hit. We were surprised at how large this house is with plenty of sitting areas inside and out. Absolutely comfortable and inviting, we loved it! The big kitchen area is great for family gatherings. And Alpine is a central location with easy access for day trips to Ft Davis, Marfa, Marathon and Big Bend. Erin was easy to work with and available when we needed her. We'll be back!
