We are Andy and Vicki Pannone and we have been married since 1982 and have four wonderful children. We live in Corpus Christi and started coming to the hill country with friends as newlyweds. As our family grew we began sharing our love of the Texas Hill Country with our children. All of us enjoy the great outdoors and love the hill country and we would love to share our 'piece of heaven' with you and yours. Our goal is to help you make memories with your loved ones!
The Owner purchased this cabin in 2002
Our family had been renting cabins in the area for several years and we all loved how excited we were to head to the hills, how relaxed we felt when we arrived and how we hated to leave at the end of our stay. Our family loves to hike Garner and Lost Maples, toob the Frio, play 'Monopoly Marathons', play gin rummy, roast marshmallows and enjoy s'mores while watching thousands of stars at night. By God's grace we found St. Clare's Cabin in 2002 and have turned it into a charming getaway for our guests.
St. Clare's Cabin offers complete privacy as there is just one cabin on the property so you have the place to yourselves to relax and enjoy.Vicki's decorating and handiwork skills are evident throughout the cabin and she treats all her guests like family. She has tried to think of everything to make her guests feel loved and welcomed. Her hand embroidered pillow shams welcome guests into either the Cowboy Bedroom or the Americana Bedroom where the beds are amply supplied with fresh linens and homemade quilts. Vicki makes sure to leave a seasonal treat for all guests and doggie treats for our four legged guests.
Thank you to Vicky for sharing this great cabin! The location is beautiful, peaceful, private, and secluded. The creek on the property was dry but I assumed it would be given the drought. Amenities were many and as described. Vicky called to make sure I was settled in and another time make arrangements for someone to come by to repair the dryer and clean out the fire pit. There was a small hole in the porch screen but I saw not a single bug take advantage of it.
My dogs and I enjoyed taking daily drives and walks. Lost Maples State Park is nearby, as is a convenience store in Vanderpool.
The best part of my stay was seeing the full moon rising over the hill. Gorgeous. I would definitely like to visit again and I would recommend the cabin to others especially if they have dogs.
For those planning an extended stay and any serious cooking you might want to bring your own cookware. The few pots and pans that are provided are lightweight and the nonstick finish badly scratched and chipped. Also, where these are stored in the bottom cabinets is a cluttered, dark, and scary place.
This was our second stay and we came back ready to book our next. We loved every minute we were there and the cabin was perfect. The Pannone's have everything we needed and more. We never want to leave when we are there. While your visiting go into Leakey and have lunch at The Friendship Grill it was excellent. And the chocolate turnovers from Bonnie's Bakery were amazing!!! We can't wait to go back to St Clare's Cabin this fall.
Let me start by saying that I contacted the owner immediately upon our return from the cabin. Vicky called a week later and stated that some of the problems had been addressed but that does not change what happened to us during our visit. The following may sound picky, but we pay the owners for a service and expect it to be in a working condition with the pictures accurately reflecting the condition of the property when we arrive. We found the cabin to be a terrible state of disrepair! The outside shower had one of the doors laying in the shower, and there was algae on the concrete where the shower head had been dripping for so long. The iron under the sink was laying in two pieces, one of the bedroom doors was falling off the top hinge so you could not shut it completely (screws were missing), there is a large hole in the screen next to the front door- so you could not sit out on the screened porch at night without the bugs coming in, the fire pit was full to the top with ash and trash burned up in it. Both benches by the fire pit were broken and cannot be safely sat on without fear of injury, and the dryer was operating improperly and ruined 3 articles of our clothing. The owner did refund us a fair price for the damage done to my wife's clothing. However, there is no way that I would recommend this VRBO to a friend, or someone seeking a review on the property. With so many other great cabins in the area, and on VRBO, choose carefully before you consider this cabin.
My wife and I, with our 2 dogs, stayed for 3 nights between Christmas and New Years and had a great time. St. Clare's was well stocked - the cookie mix is a great touch - and very comfortable. The listing and photos are accurate and the cabin was clean. A couple hours after we arrived, we got a phone call from Vicki to make sure that everything was going well.
I had originally planned on riding my motorcycle to the cabin, but the cold snap and high winds meant that my days were going to be different than I planned. We spent the warmest part of the days at Garner State Park, which is about 28 miles away; and Lost Maples State Natural Area, which is about 8 miles away. As the afternoons cooled down, we spent time outside the cabin watching the dogs patrol the property. The property is well fenced, with just a small opening at the gate. With the water being low, we had to follow them when they went down to the river, but they were content to sniff the rocks.
The evenings were the best part, though. There were lots of Christmas themed decorations, and the heater worked well, so we were always nice and warm. After dinner, we'd sit in our pyjamas, either reading, or watching dvd's that we'd brought. Very relaxing!
I'd like to go back when it's warmer and the river is flowing. It'd be a completely different experience. I'd have liked to use the outdoor shower, but not when the temperature is in the 40's! Overall, a great place, and with it being right in the middle of Texas motorcycle nirvana, the perfect location also.
My husband rented this cabin in the spring for a weeklong motorcycle tour of the hill country. When he came home raving about it, I knew we would have to go back so I could see it for myself. St. Clare's Cabin is so much more than I expected. From the location in a gorgeous valley to the complete solitude to the quaint cabin - it was all perfection. The fact that it was decked out for the holidays just pushed it over the edge for me. If you're looking for warm & cozy, you cannot get any better than this.
There are two separate bedrooms, each with comfortable beds (one firm & one soft) as well as a sleeper sofa and a love seat. We spent most of the week as a couple, but our daughter, son-in-law and two grandkids (ages 3 & 6) came up for the weekend. While it was 'cozy' with six of us, we had enough room to romp and stomp. The grandkids loved the huge yard (fenced), the hammocks, the toys, and the creek. There was enough water to chunk rocks into, which thrilled them. The adults enjoyed the cabin as well as the fire pit and charcoal grill.
The best part of St. Clare's Cabin is the attention to detail. Every nook & cranny is filled with thoughtful touches, antiques and handmade quilts. The owners obviously take great pride in their cabin and it shows. Because it was the holidays, the cabin was fully decked out. It was absolutely lovely.
The kitchen is fully stocked with cookware, dishes, pots & pans and coffee needs. There was even a jar of 'Cowboy Cookie' mix, along with eggs & butter in the fridge to make them happen. The only thing better than a hill country cabin at Christmas is one that smells like warm cookies.
We will definitely be back. Now that I've seen it in the fall, I want to come back and enjoy it in the spring and summer. And our kids & grandkids fully plan to join us again. I have a feeling St. Clare's Cabin will become a family tradition for us.
Things not listed under amenities: a hairdryer, shampoo & soaps, basic supplies like salt & pepper, cooking spray, sugar & coffee creamers, birdseed for the feeders, and linens & paper goods (paper towels, TP & tissues) and flashlights. Things you will need to provide: all firewood for the fire pit & indoor fireplace, charcoal & lighter fluid for the outdoor grill, a love of star gazing, and a need for peace & quiet.
A very heartfelt thank you to the owners for allowing us to share their love of St. Clare's. It was perfect.
