Overview

Lovettsville Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Queen Bedroom, 1 Sleep Sofa, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

We are conveniently located just outside of Lovettsville in Loudoun County, at the northern tip of Virginia -- less than a mile from the Potomac River and only six miles from the confluence of the Potomac and the Shenandoah rivers at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia.

Once a milking parlor for dairy cows, the Milk Cottage at WeatherLea Farm has been completely refurbished as a charming and cozy one-bedroom cottage with a full kitchen and bath and a large living/dining room with a convertible sofa bed to sleep 2. The cottage is furnished with attractive and comfortable antiques and art. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything guests need to prepare meals, and breakfast foods are provided as part of the rental. Guests enjoy visiting our wine grape vineyard (sometimes helping with the harvest if their visit coincides) and seeing our flock of llamas and sheep, including spring lambs. Viognier and Cabernet Franc wines made from WeatherLea grapes are available locally, and wool products from our sheep are available for purchase on the farm. The Milk Cottage at WeatherLea Farm is an ideal spot year-round for a unique farmstay experience! We are also a wedding venue in May-June and Sept-Oct; the cottage is used by wedding parties, and by other guests when no wedding is scheduled.

Surrounded by historic farm buildings that include a 1794 log and frame farmhouse and a circa 1900 barn, as well as a stunning landscape including a pond and lovely gardens and trees, the cottage also offers close proximity to many historic points of interest -- especially the Civil War sites within the 'Journey Through Hallowed Ground' historic corridor, including Antietam Battlefield, Harper's Ferry and Gettysburg (only a 45-minute drive). Visitors also have easy access to sightseeing and business in Washington D.C. by way of a commuter train that can be boarded only a mile away. For hikers, bicyclists, rafters, birdwatchers and other outdoor enthusiasts, nearby attractions include the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, the C&O Canal Towpath, the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship. Both fine dining and casual restaurants are nearby, and the historic towns of Leesburg, VA and Frederick, MD -- both of which offer an abundance of antique shops and art galleries, as well as restaurants, movies and entertainment -- are both about 15 miles away. Loudoun County, known as 'D.C.'s Wine Country,' includes over 30 wineries open for wine-tasting and purchase. And for equestrians and racing afficionados, we are about 25 miles from Middleburg, VA -- a Mecca for steeplechase races and fox hunting -- and 12 miles from the Charlestown, WV thoroughbred racetrack. Popular seasonal events in the area include the Waterford Craft Fair and the Loudoun Farm Tour in October, a number of equestrian events in Leesburg and Middleburg between May and October, and the county fairs of Loudoun in Virginia and Frederick in Maryland.

Owners Malcolm and Pamela Baldwin live in the main farmhouse and are always ready to assist guests and suggest activities, points of interest and good food and wine.

About Pamela and Malcolm Baldwin

Pamela and Malcolm Baldwin are a couple in very active retirement from careers in international development and environmental law. We have lived and worked abroad and enjoy receiving guests from all over the world. We work hard on our farm tending our vineyard and our flock of sheep and llamas, and hosting weddings and events as well as overnight guests. We are deeply involved in Loudoun County efforts to preserve farmland and the historic and natural heritage of our area, while promoting the the rural economy, including tourism and the arts. We work to make our farm-based 'wool, wine, weddings and weekends' businesses as green as possible. Malcolm serves on the board of the Piedmont Environmental Council, and WeatherLea Farm has been permanently protected by a conservation easement under the stewardship of the Land Trust of Virginia.

Pamela and Malcolm Baldwin purchased this cottage in 1992

Why Pamela and Malcolm Baldwin chose Lovettsville

We explored Loudoun County and purchased our farm while living overseas, seeing all its wonderful amenities, nearby attractions and possibilities (as described in our property description). We also recognized the great potential of the cottage, first using it as a long-term rental property and more recently as a facility for short-term vacation and rental.

What makes this cottage unique

We offer unusual variety of experience, both rural and urban. Guests may explore a working farm that combines a boutique wine grape vineyard and pastures with peacefully grazing sheep and llamas with guest hospitality and a unique wedding/event space in our classic barn. The cottage is very comfortable, attractive and convenient, and WeatherLea Farm as a whole offers a wonderfully restorative country experience in a beautiful setting with friendly hosts. And just beyond our property lies a whole world of history, nature, adventure, antiquing and more...including immediate proximity to the MARC commuter train, providing easy access to the sights of Washington D.C.

Heaven on Earth!

My family of 4 spent a weekend here - and this place knows how to bring the good life! The house is very spacious, the breakfast was plentiful, and we enjoyed 3 meals sitting right outside, just enjoying the scenery. My kids loved exploring the farm, seeing the sheep and llamas, and paddling a canoe around the pond. There are brochures with nearby attractions - which are plentiful. We spent one day at nearby Great Country Farm and another in Harper's Ferry. There are at least a dozen nearby wineries to tour in the area. It was a great weekend of relaxation away from DC - our normal home. If you're considering this place for a wedding - it's gorgeous!

Owner's Response: Elaine, we greatly enjoyed seeing your eager kids enjoy the farm! Relatively few of our guests venture out in the canoe, so it was a special treat to watch their enjoyment while doing that. And good for them to discover a cherry tree with lots of cherries to enjoy! It's so nice to know that kids can still enjoy the simple things and especially the outdoors. We hope to see you here again!

Anyone traveling the C&O trail, either by bike or foot, this quaint & charming cottage on such a historical farm was just what was needed to recharge for the next day ride. Truly enjoyed sitting in the vineyard under the gazebo as the night time sky meandered upon us. Would suggest anyone visiting Washington DC spend a few nights and drive to the capital to sightsee.

Owner's Response: Dear Bill: It was so much fun to meet you and Mike on the last evening of your long bicycle trip along the entire 184-mile C&O Canal Towpath! I'm glad we were able to provide a comfortable place for you to rest and walk among the sheep and the grapevines. We'd love to see either or both of you back here soon! Best, Pamela and Malcolm

Owner's Response: Dear Amanda: Malcolm and I greatly enjoyed meeting you and Vajna during your winter break from cruise ship work. You were very patient during our very cold and snowy weather and the accompanying power and plumbing issues! We hope you'll return in a warmer season when all is green and outdoor activities are abundant. Happy sailing, and do stay in touch. Best Pamela

We had the most fantastic stay and had some lovely wine with the hosts in their vineyard at sunset on our last night. A truly unforgettable experience. Wish we could have stayed longer and would definitely return one day if we can.

Weather Lea Cottage

  • 5 of 5
We arrived from California to visit my son who attends college nearby. The proprietors were very friendly, welcoming, and attentive to any needs. My son wanted to watch the Home Run Derby on TV, but the satellite dish was partially blocked by a tree branch. Mr. Baldwin had it taken care of within ten minutes. We had complete access to the farm, including the pond for fishing and the barn for swing dancing (an activity of my son and his college friends). The barn was very charming and set up for events including lights, tables, chairs, and heaters for the wintertime. The grounds are beautifully kept and was very picturesque, especially when the Lightening Bugs(Fireflies) come out in the evening. The cottage was well kept as well and we were very comfortable. Our stay was in the summer which is very humid, but the two AC's in the cottage kept us cool. I felt that the advertisement for the cottage was accurate if not a little understated. I would definitely stay here again and will recommend our stay to all of our friends. You won't be disappointed!!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Patrice, for your kind remarks. We enjoyed your family greatly -- especially appreciating how you made the most of what our farm offers. And watching your son and his friends swing-dancing in the barn was a special treat! We hope to see you all here again next year.

All the best, Pamela Baldwin
