La Cuesta Roja S.A.
If you have ever dreamed of being surrounded by flowering plants, smells that say fresh, oxygen filled air, hundreds of varieties of exotic birds, greenery, bright blue skies, gorgeous views in every direction all with the subtle sound of waves reaching the shores, this is the place for you. An extraordinary hide out where you and a loved one can immerse yourselves in the natural beauty of this unique paradise.
There are few places in the entire world that are as stunningly beautiful, private and safe as La Cuesta Roja, S.A., our home, available to you. If this, one of a kind, property was in California, it would be a 20 million dollar property and most likely, not available to rent. Ideally located near the renowned Corcovado National Park, Drake Bay where Sir Francis Drake hid from pirates, and the Terraba Sierpe National mangrove preserve. Tours of these and other local destinations available by pick up right in front of the house.
No matter what your pleasure is; fishing, swimming, whale watching, swimming with the dolphins, zip lining, horse back riding, kayaking and more, it is all available right from the very private beach in front of the house. This is truly a place you will think is only viewable in the movies and available to millionaires. Warning, you will want to pinch yourself when you look around and see where you are.
La Cuesta Roja is our private home perched on a hill overlooking the big blue and magnificent Pacific Ocean where you can watch whales pass by. Turn your head slightly and you are looking at a vast palm lined beach which is part of the island across the river. Turn again and you are looking up the incredibly beautiful and wild Sierpe River and the biggest mangrove reserve in Central America.
Looking up the river you can see two distinct mountain ranges in the distance. A slight turn again and you see where the river meets the magnificent and wild Rain forest.
You can literally see thousands and thousands of acres but miraculously, you cannot see another house. Sound like a movie setting? Wait until you see it.
Our home for rent is still our home where we spend nearly half the year. It needs to be said that this is a rental property for the healthy and adventurous and not a good place for those who are not in good physical condition or not seeking adventure. While it has most of the comforts; my wife always asks if you like camping as a prerequisite to enjoying this special place. Location, location, location our home is not fancy, new or in of its self fabulous but the location is.
When you arrive at our very private beach by boat (there is no other way to get here) there is a concrete walkway winding it's way up the slope to where the house is set. There are several places where you will want to stop on the assent just to absorb the beauty.
With any luck you will be met by our happy and smiling caretaker who will, with the help of our boat driver, help carry your luggage, groceries, water, beer etc up to the house.
Provided we supply the transportation you will be orientated by one of us and shown the ropes. The beds will have clean fresh linens; the towels will be clean and ready. The refrigerator will be on and cold and you will be ready to settle in. It may take a few minutes to come to realize you are actually seeing the views you will be seeing.
The boat captain will depart and you will be on your own. For your safety and convenience, our caretaker will remain there the entire time of your stay in his home below.
The home has two bedrooms each with private bathroom, flushing toilets, sinks and hot showers. The master bedroom has a king size bed the guest room has two wide twins that can be pushed together to make a king.
and our top 6 reasons for why we will be going back to la Cuesta Roja:
1. Family-friendly - my partner and I and our two boys (7 & 9) had an adventure that will never be forgotten! We had no worries about their safety, lots of room to roam and expend energy, days were spent playing in the waves, running up and down the stairs - not as onerous as has been described, very manageable, generally discovering. Great house layout with separate room and bathroom for the kids, though we lived on the covered porch when not down at the beach or exploring the jungle.
2. Wildlife - the howler monkeys hung out one day in the trees beside the house, the 4 scarlet red macaws who returned to "their" tree daily, the lizards, the crabs, the wild horses on the beach across from the house, and all the dogs! Who needs a zoo - just go to la Cuesta Roja!
3. Vista & natural setting - overwhelmingly beautiful, just get in the hammock each morning and pinch yourself - it is real and it is amazing! Beaches to wander, jungle to explore, we paddled on the river and explored the mangroves. The stunning flowers around the property, discovering how pineapples grow, mango trees, banana trees and being able to eat as much coconut as we could!
4. La Cuesta Roja is remote yet so very comfortable - beds, cooking, small fridge, showers & flushing toilets (!), fab solar-powered system - never failed, laundry (!), even an iPod dock for our tunes in the evening!!! Jim has thought of everything. There are even 5-6 pairs of boots and 6 life-jackets as well as 2 boogie boards.
5. Jim was more like a friend than an owner, we really enjoyed our time with him - including a day of fantastic fishing - who catches a sailfish and a rooster fish - we did (well, Jim's expertise did!)!! He was so easy to work with, patiently answered all our Qs before we arrived, was available to us when were on-site and then shared pictures with us after our trip. Jim, you've got friends in Toronto!!!
6. This was a life experience, it is the most talked-about part of our 2wk trip in Costa Rica (surfing lessons in Dominical ranked #2!) and I've shared Jim's web-site link with loads of friends and encouraged them to take their own adventure. We'll be back :-)
After a 2 week journey down the Pacific Coast (staying in 7 rental homes), La Cuesta Roja was our most memorable stay. Our only complaint was not booking the property longer! Jim, was extremely easy to work with from setting everything up, to bringing us emergency beers when we ran out! I can't say enough about our amazing day of fishing with Jim and Carlos. Being a group of anglers that went on multiple guided charters throughout our stay in Costa Rica, this was not only our most successful day (lost count after 40!), but the most fun and relaxed. You are fishing with friends, not just a paying customer with a guide that's counting down the minutes until their shift is over. The beautiful beaches, mangrove lagoons, animals, trails, comfortable lodging, and expertise from the caretaker (Rafa) all make this location a nature lover's paradise. This trip was so inspirational, that we're taking Spanish classes and already planning our next trip (or maybe even a re-location) to this majestic area. Thanks again Jim, we can't wait to return!
Because you might book it up and make it impossible for me to rent next time! Jim is a great host, and the listing is exactly as he says. This is for adventurous folks who wish to truely go off the grid for a while. My wife and I enjoyed being removed from society for a week and wish we had more time there to unwind even further. I can't say enough about the views, the seclusion and the absolute peacefulness of Siepre Rio. A must on your bucket list!
If you want to experience the local wild life, this is the place to do it. We saw parrots, Toucans, Macaws, monkeys & a sloth right around the house. The surrounding foliage is amazing with orchids, mango trees, star fruit trees,& hybiscus to name a few. We enjoyed the snorkeling at Cano Island; our guides were very helpful. While I love adventure, I appreciated having Jim a text away to arrange everything from tours to taxis & hotel reservations. Getting to & from this home is complicated but he set it all up for us flawlessly. I found Jim to be very honest, reliable & helpful. Rafa did a great job catching fish for us once Jim helped us communicate with him. I appreciated the screens on the windows. We were here late May, the beginning of the rainy season. The mosquitos weren't that bad but they still found us at night. I also appreciated the washing machine for our clothes. Having said all that, I would caution anyone that doesn't like the outdoors & is skiddish around bugs. We found several small, harmless crabs & geckos in the house. Several families of bats live on the porch; they won't bother you. I made sure to turn on a light before entering a room to avoid stepping on anything unpleasant. You do hear a lot of unusual sounds in the night; that can be a little unsettling until you figure out what they are. I wish I had researched the local critters, so I would have better understood what we were hearing. Those monkeys sound much bigger than they actually are! It's also pretty toasty during the day; if you don't tolerate heat well, you might be a little uncomfortable. The fans really felt good at night in the bedrooms. I am not sure that I would swim at the beach by the house as they have found a couple of crocodiles there recently; Rafa caught one while we were there. The kitchen had everything I needed, including a blender. We made tasty mango drinks daily. Be sure to bring zip locs to keep ants out of your snacks. The local store didn't have a lot of fresh veggies, mostly potatoes, bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, & some fruit. I would get your fruit from one of the venders before you get to Sierpe. Bring with you any favorite drink mixes, boxed side items, & snacks. They have a lot of things, but probably not your favorite brand or unusual item. Make sure you have plenty of water. This was an unbelievable vacation that no resort could have matched. Hope this helps others have a great stay at this home!
La Cuesta Roja is just as description presents. It is a beautiful, secluded property with actually about 3 or 4 private beaches. It has million dollar views both at sunset and sunrise. You have a great view of the river and ocean….which by the way is very warm.
The owner, Jim makes all attempts at making your stay great. If you need something he will make it happen. During our stay we were even able to get my fiancé’ a birthday cake made from his friend Sonya, who was just an incredibly nice and beautiful person.
The house is just as described and shown on the site. You may also want to check out youtube.com to see a trip up the river and to the house.
The property is definitely for the adventurous, the stairs can be tiring….but who cares?. It is very warm and humid…..slow down and enjoy……” tranquillo me amigo”. It is a 45 minute ride anywhere with no town or lights in site…………….awesome location.
The property is a bird watchers paradise. Toucans are hard to see and the Macaws do their daily flight across the river, but it is still wonderful to see.
Every morning you wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys and the local roosters…very cool. At night there are many bugs outside and some it seems sing to you!
Rafa, the caretaker is very helpful and will take you on a hike behind the house by Marvins’ place and at the end by William’s place. This is a hike that you should do in 5-5.5 hours, not the 3.5 hours we did! Too hot for that. Bring lots of water on the hike and you may even see a howler or squirrel monkey as well as dart frogs.
During our stay we even had a new neighbor a three-toed sloth that was in the trees down the back stairway (to Mike’s place).
Jim made arrangements for us to go to Corcovado Park, which was very nice, our guide Stanley took some wonderful pictures for us and provided a great lunch. We saw Coaties ( raccoon family), crocs, sloths, Macaws, squirrel monkeys. Jim also took us out towards Cano Island where we were able to pick up 9 yellow fins and one real nice wahoo. We ate fresh fish for three days and had the best sashimi!
Some words of advice:
You need to go back more than once.
Take lots of pictures
Bring lots of bug spray and suntan lotion (we went through two cans of each)
Don’t worry about the Halloween crabs that come in, they are harmless as is the local iguana outback by the compost bin.
Jim provides you with one 5 gallon jug of water…we recommend you buy two more.
We had the most adventurous time at LaCuesta Roja. Much appreciated was Jim's description of what to expect and it was exactly what we were looking for. In its rugged beauty, this place is your own private oasis.
The cabin is rustic but provides the simple ammenities of showers, flushing toilets, washer, fridge, and a gas stove and grill. Everything is solar powered, which we used little during the day ( I think the fridge absorbs a lot) and still found we were without by around 9 pm. Although we did not mind one bit, we had brought some candles with us and found that regardless of power we were enjoying all of our evenings by candlelight or going to bed early in preperation of enjoying the next day.
We spent our days hiking the ruggedly groomed trails in the rainforest, hiking to the coves, fishing (river and ocean) kayaking, smimming, laying in the tide pools (especially enjoyed by our infant daughter), and lounging on the porch. We are very active poeple and never found ourselves at a loss for something to do. Once at the property you are on your own (Rafa will help you if necessary).
We received help with preperations before arriving at the property from Jim's friends. They were so kind and helpful ensuring we had everything we needed for our stay.
My husband and I stayed here with our infant daughter and my parents. It was a perfect family vacation. We look forward to returning when our daughter is old enough to be back at the property. As there are many steep stairs and dropoffs, we will need to wait to bring her back when she is maybe 10 (depending on her level of resposibility/adventure). Although, I wouldn't mind returning without her before then.
Very much enjoyed the resident dogs, as we have two at home. They are very friendly. They were even able to be around our infant.
Suggestions: Bring candles or LED lanterns, bring fishing gear, wear sturdy sandles
Our humble home is located right on the beach with sufficient altitude for a truly magnificent view in all directions. White sand beaches to hike, rocks to fish off and hundreds of miles of channels in the river through the mangrove to explore. Watch wales spouting from the front porch view monkeys and an incredible variety of birds from the same porch.
Other Activities: kayaking, wildlife viewing, boating, beach combing
