Casa Mano Prieto, a 1350 square foot home, is nestled beneath the Puertacitas and Mano Prieto Mountains with long range views of Blue Mountain and Mount Livermore.
The enchanting setting is perfect for any getaway plans - exploring, birding, hiking or just watching the jackrabbits and deer. Near by are the McDonald Observatory, Davis Mountains State Park, Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Fort Davis National Historic Site. Views outside all windows display the vastness and beauty of West Texas. The lighting changes the views all day long. Night brings the darkest, brightest, starry skies for the star gazer in you. It is a perfect spot to set up your own telescope.

The amazing beauty and peacefulness brought Tom and Tex Harrison to this particular spot in West Texas from western North Carolina. They lived in this casa while they built their home and observatory.
Tex Harrison purchased this house in 2006
After their home was finished, they decided to share this beautiful spot with others and opened Casa Mano Prieto in January 2010.
Every day offers different looks of the desert. It is ever changing and always beautiful.
Everything at this property was perfect for a long relaxing weekend.
The common areas are large airy and bright. With many large windows and sliding doors to show off the beautiful scenery. We took full use of a fantastic kitchen and prepared breakfasts and a dinner. The kitchen is clean, modern and user-friendly with some gourmet appliances.
The bedrooms are smaller but cozy. We only used the queen bed, which not only has marvelous views but also opened onto their serene backyard with sculptures, flowering vines and water features. The second bedroom has one full bed and one twin bed, fyi.
The location is just perfect for all sorts of activities. Ft Davis, McDonald Observatory (a must!), Marfa, Alpine and still a good launching pad for Big Bend. I highly recommend Davis Mtns State Park's hikes and viewpoints, the 70mile driving loop around the Davis Mtns and the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center, both its botanical gardens and the Canyon hike.
This is an area of Texas that all true Texans should experience and see for themselves at some point. The views and night skies are staggering, the people and towns are quintessential Texan...only a mile up in elevation!
We are excited to return to this rental as the price is reasonable, has great views and it's simply cozy and comfortable. Thank you so much Tex and Tom! Loved every minute.
For the price relative to other properties, this is a good value. The owners were super nice and friendly on arrival. My wife and I stayed in the room with the queen bed. This is not an upscale rental, but the pricing does reflect that. This property is clean and well kept. It does have the basics covered and nearby Ft Davis (8 miles). The views are great.
The pros: great location, quiet, lots of windows, outdoor patios, easy communication with owners, nice cookware, nice dining table/living area, games to play. The cons: bed is squeaky so you may find yourself waking when you or your partner turn over, the house obviously grew organically and has a bit of a cobbled feel. That said, it was clean and we were not lacking in any necessities.
Unlike others I would not rate it a 5 star property. I'm not overly picky but I reserve 5 stars for more luxurious accommodations. If I could give it a 3.5 I think that's probably the right number.
If you don't mind mix and match furnishings and looking for a value option near Marfa/Ft Davis, this is a good choice.
My young teen two kids and I stayed here in AUG 16~21 2013 to see and enjoy the Marfa, and surrounding area, loved West Texas skies...Place was spacious and artfully decorated, The kitchen was fully stocked if you wanted to cook, and the bedrooms were cute and comfortable, enjoyed watching hummingbirds outside of garden.
night were cool and beautiful, very close to Marfa/Fort Davis for day time activity and dinning out.
Definitely would love to go back!
We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay in this home. The decor/architecture reflected the area. Huge windows in every room provided great views of the mountains no matter which room you were in. Loved the kitchen filed with every appliance/gadget you could need. The bedrooms are a bit cozy since their rooms were added on to the original structure but the beds were very comfortable. The home is situated about halfway between Fort Davis and Marfa making it a good location for exploring. The owner, Tex, was very hospitable and quick to offer recommendations to attractions/restaurants if you want ideas. Despite there being no central heat, the room radiators kept the home nice and warm and night and the sun warmed up the home during the day. I would highly recommend the home to those wishing to have a more comfortable stay while in the area!
So here it is almost one month after our trip to Big Bend, and we are still reminiscing about how perfect our stay was, and wishing we could go back right now! This is due, largely in part, to the hospitality of Tom and Tex, and to the incredibly clean, comfortable, eclectic, artistic-feeling home they shared so graciously with us. The decor was a perfect compliment to the Marfa mindset we hoped to experience while on this adventure. It poured down rain on our first night, and Tex was so sweet, she even apologized for the weather-ha! The views are breathtaking, and we thoroughly enjoyed solving the world's problems on the patio which overlooked the mountain range. There was a sense of magic opening the door in the morning, and hearing...absolutely nothing. The sound of 'nothing' is a memorable one, which we appreciated in its entirety. There are also beautiful gardens in the backyard, which are obviously lovingly maintained. They help you appreciate the beauty of the local flora and fauna. In other words, the location is GREAT!
It's all things, big and little, that makes this home a perfect home to choose for your journey.
For example, the beautiful gourmet kitchen simply inspires cooking, and the artwork showcased throughout the home equally inspires creativity. We were very pleasantly surprised to learn that the main house next door has a private observatory attached, and learned that Tom is quite an astronomical expert. Thankfully, he shares his passion of the stars with his guests by displaying several photos of galaxies far and near in the guest house. We were fascinated with the many pictures of our beautiful universe, and enjoyed many hours of quality fantasizing time gazing upon them all. In a nutshell, we intend to return and are grateful for the hospitality.
From my first point of contact with the owners of Caso Mano Prieto, Tex and Tom, I knew that our experience was going to be a wonderful one. The Casa was absolutely lovely. Tex and Tom thought of everything when offering all the comforts of home. The breakfast nook offers a beautiful view and just outside is a lovely patio that is perfect for drinking a glass of wine as the evening comes to an end. We sat there the first night and had the rare privilege of seeing a family of Aoudad climbing to the top of one of the small mountains (bring binoculars). Both bedrooms offer a view of not only a lovely landscaped garden but you can also see the McDonald Observatory just by looking out the window or patio whichever room you are in. Be sure to ask Tom for a tour of his observatory - it's small in comparison to the MO but he has the perfect set-up for a small star-gazing party. Tom also has amazing pics of the galaxies that you can purchase. Being in the kitchen was like a dream for me since I love to cook - Tex made sure to have every cooking gadget available for a gourmet meal. And lovely dishware and stemware available as well.. There is a grill so don't forget the beef. :) The living area is cozy, it offers lovely views and an ample supply of games and magazines. What do you need when you stay at the Casa Mano Prieto - just your clothes (which could be optional too, I guess ;). Tex and Tom have provided the perfect 'home away from home'. The only thing missing is a tv which makes for the 'perfect escape'. :) But if you cannot live with one, you can bring a laptop, they do have wifi. You will not be disappointed if you choose to stay at Casa Mano Prieto.
