Santa Maria a Poneta is a charming hamlet situated in the heart of Tuscany, in the Chianti area between Florence and Siena. The farmhouse, with its Romanesque church, is located in a valley rich in history near Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra and many other Medieval and Renaissance cities and towns. A holiday at Santa Maria a Poneta offers you the marvelous experience of living in the heart of Tuscany in a special location.

A unique emotion, in the historical hamlet of Santa Maria a Poneta surrounded by a park with olive trees and cypress, where antique roses and herbs fill the air with their fresh scents, and great lemon trees in old terracotta pots show our attentions and love for this special place. The swimming pool allows you to enjoy the Tuscan sun surrounded by the vineyards which produce our prestigious Chianti wine.

The backyard and terraces overlook open fields in which we breed our horses and green hills with vineyards and olive groves. A blend of Renaissance era with present day comfort .

Why Riccardo Bordoni chose Barberino Val d'Elsa

Our apartment BARBERINO is a suitable accommodation for 4/5 people. On the ground floor set into cool stone walls is the original barn, now a loggia, or covered terrace, which is essentially like an outdoor living room in the summer. The patio area is furnished with a table and chairs for dining outdoors. Coming off the entryway is the living room to your left and the eat-in kitchen to your right. The apartment has terracotta floors and beautiful wooden ceiling beams that rise above. The living room has a large comfortable seating and a window the overlooks the property. All furniture is of the highest quality with several antiques. The kitchen is lovely with brand new appliances and is furnished with a large table for comfortable, casual meals and lively conversation. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and one more sitting room. The master bedroom has a romantic antique doublebed, a large armoire. The beautiful headboard has been passed down in the family generation after generation. The window looks out over the vine-covered hills. The adjacent bathroom has a full shower, toilet, bidet, and sink. The view from this particular window is one of the best as you gaze over the olive grove out to Chianti's rolling hills! The finish work in the bathroom is excellent, with beautiful tile details done by master Italian ceramic craftsmen. Over the sink is a large mirror and excellent lighting. The spacious second bedroom is a bit larger then the master bedroom and has two twin beds It has good closet space, a little desk with an antique armoire. In the second sitting room, a large sofà bed can be the 5th bed for one more guest (less than 12 years old).

What makes this farmhouse unique

Bed linen and bath towels (changed once a week), final cleaning, are all included in the price. We have not airconditioning, it is not usefull in these old houses. Extra services available: domestic maid, breakfast, Tuscan dinners, cooking classes, babysitter.

We can reserve for our guests tickets for the bigger museums of Florence so that to avoid queue. We can make restaurant reservation, or organize masseuse services, rent bicycles, painting and cooking classes, and especially wine tasting in our farm Il Paganello.

Overall nice property, would not stay in off-season

We stayed in the Barberino apartment for 6 nights in late November. The property itself is very nice and the apartment is lovely. My only issue with the apartment was the water heater. The water would turn from burning hot to ice cold 6-8 times during a 10 minute shower! The hot water went out completely at one point, and it was fixed that day, but it didn't fix the inconsistent temperature problem.

Also, the area is pretty dead in the off-season. Many of the recommended restaurants in the area are closed and the weather was cold and rainy. I knew the weather might be bad at that time of year, but didn't expect so much to be closed down. We were not offered a wine/olive oil tasting like others have mentioned, I assume since there was only one other guest. Also, it would be nice if they provided a bit more information in the apartment - where to find the laundry on the property and where to find nearby train stations, banks, etc. Also, the heating cost added up quickly - we were charged 80 euros for a 6 night stay.

Wonderful place to stay - would love to return!

We just finished a beautiful week at Santa Maria a Poneta in Tuscany. Riccardo & Susanna were terrific hosts and we had everything we needed for a fabulous time in Italy. 30 miles from Florence, Siena and 30 minutes from Volterra and San Gimigniano. Pisa was an easy 1.5 hours. We had 2 rooms - my parents in one and my family in the other (me, husband, and 11 year old daugher). The property was impeccably maintained - photos of the grounds and rooms are accurate. There were other guests staying at the villa but we could hardly tell they were there. Any questions or concerns we had were immediately addressed. There's a fresh cheese farm up the street. Riccardo hosted a wine and olive oil tasting at their farm nearby. I give them 5 stars all around - we'd go back in a second and very strongly recommend it to others. **Self transportation is mandatory, but is mandatory for this region in general.

This property is beautifull and very clean and the location is perfect. We stayed there for a week and drove around enjoying the beauty of Tuscany. The olive oil is the best I ever tasted. The owners are very friendly and helpful. All the restaurants which the owners recommend are very good. Strongly recommend this property to anyone who loves Tuscany countryside. If we have chance to go to Italy again, we will stay there again.

Ultimate Tuscan Experience

What a wonderful place to stay. I don't even know where to begin. The property is perfect. Absolutely no complaints. We (2 adults and a 1 year old) stayed in the Barberino apartment and it was everything we hoped it would be. Very spacious, great patio, wonderful furnishings, etc. This apartment was great for us, but could easily fit a larger family or another couple comfortably. The hosts, Riccardo and Suzanne, were wonderful and helped with anything we needed while staying with them. They had a baby crib and high chair available for our daughter so we didn't have to travel with them, which was a huge help. We also had the chance to visit their other property, Il Paganello, for a wine tasting with Riccardo and it too was a perfect Tuscan setting. Riccardo's wines are wonderful and shipped some back with us to enjoy back at home. The location is central to almost all the Tuscan highlights so you can easily travel all over.

I only wish we could have stayed longer. We'll have to return soon and stay at Il Paganello next time so we can compare.

Fantastic stay at Santa Maria a Poneta -- we highly recommend

This is one of two properties owned by Ricardo and Susanna. We stayed at Santa Maria a Poneta, in a two-bedroom apartment in the old farmhouse. The apartment was spacious and appointed with lovely and usable antiques, a nicely equipped kitchen, and the swimming pool and patio are to die for. We swam every day in the pool even though in May it was still a bit cool in the evenings. This is also an excellent location. Siena 25 minutes away, lovely Barberino Val d'Elsa five minutes away, and the weekly market in nearby Poggibonsi was a delight with its food and vegetables. Property is super clean with a full time caretaker, and the landscaping is luscious. Riccardo and Susanna are very very helpful and their English is plenty adequate for communication. We highly recommend this property. Their second property, Paganello, we did not see the rooms, but I would recommend Santa Maria a Poneta over Il Paganello. The farmhouse is completely renovated to a high standard.
