Il-Marhab in Xewkija is a typical farmhouse from the early 17th century. It is located in walking distance to the picturesque pebble bay Mgarr-Ix-Xini. Through the main entrance with stone arcs and tiled, patterned floor you reach an open, sunny square that is surrounded by plants. This leads to a spacious bedroom with en suite bathroom. On the ground floor there is a fully equipped kitchen with granite worktops, dining table with 8 chairs, fridge, washing machine, gas-/electro-stove, cable TV, telephone, fireplace and the main bathroom. Outside there is a large terrace with stone tiles and tables where you can enjoy your dinner al fresco. The farmhouse fully deserves its 5 stars.

Xewkija is the oldest village in Gozo and has approximately 3000 inhabitants. The impressing Rotunda church has the second highest tower in Europe after the St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome. The small, rocky bay of Mgarr-Ix-Xini, which has been used as a harbour during medieval times, can be reached on foot or by car. Today it opens for spectacular views on the sea and great possibilities for diving and snorkelling. There are many caves to discover.

A treat

We had one of our best holidays here in August 2009. 2 weeks of sunshine started with a seamless transfer from airport to ferry to house. The house is rustic and charming with a glorious swimming pool which stays clean. A car is mandatory if you want freedom althought the local shops are ok; 3 boys 11-15 learned to dive with patient tuition from the Calypso Dive Centre. All 5 of us are returning in 2010. The village of Xewkija is charming as are the many local Maltese people we met there.

My family and I have just spent two weeks in this great farmhouse, which far exceeded our expectations. It's an ideal place to get away from it all. The farmhouse was very large, clean and airy and easily accommodated our familie, with room for a second! The swimming pool is huge and it offered a refreshing dip on the hotter days of August. Victoria, the island's capital, was only a 5 minute drive away and offered plenty of restaurants and shops. You've got to try the excellent ice cream in the main piazza! We also enjoyed barbecues in the warm evenings on the big stone patio overlooking the pool and garden with peach trees. The owner Ted, was extremely helpful in recommending the best places to visit and where to dine as well as organizing our direct airport transfer and car rental. We really felt safe, there was loads to do and the farmhouse was just perfect. Seeing the magnificent Rotunda church in Xewkija is a must. I'm highly recommending this farmhouse to my friends.

Great Farmhouse

TonyMNYC New York, NY
Review Submitted: October 15, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
Our stay at Il-Marhab farmhouse was the first time we visited the island of Gozo and we were impressed by the efficiency of its owner, before and during our stay, and by the quality of the farmhouse.

Our whole experiences far surpassed our expectations and are already planning next year’s holiday. The farmhouse was great with four spacious bedrooms (three ensuite) and such a lovely private swimming pool that it was sometimes hard to convince ourselves to leave!

We would recommend this farmhouse to anyone who is thinking of going to Gozo. The nearest bay is about 25 minutes’ walk. It is very pretty, quiet and has one of the most beautiful waters that I have ever seen in the Mediterranean

We have just spent two weeks at this splendid farmhouse and we enjoyed every minute of it. The farmhouse was spotlessly clean and is extremely spacious with massive stone walls that keep it cool and comfortable inside.

There are four nearby mini-markets that stock most basic items. The bus stop is only a few metres away. Our children spent most of the day in the fantastic swimming pool; this pool is even bigger than some of the four/five star hotels available on the island; we relaxed in the shade of the lovely flagstone courtyard next to an ancient fountain.

The citrus trees at the back of the garden provided most of the lime for my gin and tonics while my wife sipped the excellent home-made merlot wine that came with the food pack provided for us on arrival.

There is so much to do and see on Gozo and I do recommond hiring a jeep, even for a few days. If you have time, arrange for a local boat to take you through the pristine coves and bays of Comino during an evening. We loved it and God willing will definitely return next year.

Visit July/August 2008

Review Submitted: August 14, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
This beautiful traditional building offers a really nice atmosphere and is well laid out. If you are searching for an away from it all holiday, this is the place for you. There is only one bar/restaurant nearby, but after that, apart from two or three shops where you can buy most food items, there is nothing else. A car is therefore essential if you do not wish to spend your well earned holiday preparing your own food. As for the property being near the sea - I don't think so. You will need a car!!

The farmhouse itself, although beautiful, actually needs some tender loving care and a little money spending on it. There is no air conditioning, just squeeky ceiling fans. The fly screen door to the large arched door overlooking the pool, has a good sized hole in it allowing the many many flies and mosquitoes to enter at will. The curtains to this same door are mouldy. The outside furniture his very cheap plastic oval tables, which have certainly been around for several years and desperately need replacing. The sun umbrella in one of the tables appears to have been taken from an ice cream parlour and is very rusty. The Pool net, which you will need to use regularly to scoop out the many many flies and wasps etc, has several holes in it, making the task difficult.

The owners really should wake up to the fact that this property may once have been luxurious, but certainly is not now. Come on spend a little of the huge amount of money you charge to stay here on updating a few things, but definitely install air conditioning, it is essential here.
