Overview

Jaco House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 2 ½ bathrooms, sleeps 7

This is a very central, but private, location in the small fishing village of Tarcoles. It's an oceanfront property with a beautiful view of the Pacific and you are able to watch magnificent sunsets from the large covered front porch or raised gazebo. Scarlet macaws fly over morning and evening going to and from their feeding grounds and often spend time throughout the day in the trees on and around the property. You can walk on the beach for miles, sometimes without seeing another soul! Less than a 10 minute drive to the north is the Tarcoles River where you often see huge crocodiles basking in the sun.

The house is very comfortable and has a lovely bar on the front porch. Both front and back have large covered areas to sit under and relax, after a busy day of sightseeing. As an added bonus, our English speaking manager is available to help you out with car rentals, tours or anything else that you need.

Professionally managed with a personal touch by a property owner who cares!

Area : Our manager is very helpful. She will even stock the fridge before you arrive!

You can buy fresh fish for your supper, right off the boats, from the Cooperativa only a two minute walk down the road or, if you prefer, you can go to one of the many restaurants within a few minutes drive. For all your grocery needs, Jaco boasts a new, very modern grocery store.

We are five minutes from Carara Biological Reserve where you are able to hike for hours and view the nesting boxes of the macaws. You will also see many other varieties of birds and animals.

We are only 20 minutes north of Jaco, a major surfing area, and an easy one hour and 45 minute drive north of the beautiful Manuel Antonio Park where you can see white-faced and spider monkeys swinging through the trees, or perhaps a sloth, moving in slow motion through the branches.

If you are looking for a home away from home, where you can get in touch with nature & see the real Costa Rica, look no further than 'Casa Sammie.

Amenities and Activities: We now have a raised gazebo at the side of the house for amazing views of the Pacific & the sunset. At the back is a large covered patio and a beautiful private pool. We've recently added a bodega next to the house with an additional bathroom and a roomy bedroom that sleeps 2 more people. Very nice & private.

Phone, Satellite TV, Full Kitchen, Microwave, Coffee Maker, Refrigerator, Blender, Toaster Oven, Cooking Utensils provided, Linens and towels provided, Clothes Washer, Charcoal Grill (BBQ), Maid Service available for a small fee, Hot Showers & hot water in the kitchen, Air Conditioners in two of the bedrooms.

Activities: Hiking in Carara Park, Golf, Fishing, Wildlife Viewing, Horseback Riding, Sightseeing, Swimming, Surfing, Birdwatching, Zip Line Canopy Tours, Butterfly Farm, Gorgeous Waterfall - hike to the bottom and swim in the natural pools, Crocodile Tours.

Area: We are only a 1 1/4 hr. drive from the airport in San Jose and, as we are in a central location, it is easy to take many tours and excursions

Tours, Shopping and More Photos : Don't miss a tour with Tico-Style Tours. Gino is a neighbour who will take you - fishing for a day; to beautiful white sand beaches for a swim; snorkelling, where you will see an amazing assortment of tropical fish; jigging for fish; touring the coastline; diving for lobster, which he will cook for you, along with the fish that you've caught, on a grill at a private beach; to visit a waterfall; or, he will put together a tour including all or any of the above. His wife, Maria, is an excellent cook who will deliver your supper right to the house or come in and cook for you. We highly recommend them. You'll have a true Costa Rican experience!

There's a modern grocery store just 15 min. south and Jaco (20 min.) has many great places to shop.

We have lots more photos of the house & surrounding area that we'd be happy to share with you. Just click on the link below for 'more photos of this home and area'. You can also check out our video online by clicking on the 'virtual tour' link below.

About Larry & Lynn Green

We're a Canadian couple, married for 46 years, who have been travelling to Costa Rica several times a year since 2000. We have 3 married children, 5 wonderful grandchildren and assorted grand-dogs.

Larry & Lynn Green purchased this house in 2005

Why Larry & Lynn Green chose Jaco

After travelling throughout Costa Rica for 4 years we decided to buy in Tarcoles. Our decision was based on the fact that it's one of the only places left where you see the beautiful Scarlet Macaws every day. Another important factor was that it's located just over one hour from the San Jose airport, which makes it very handy for us, and our guests, to get to. It's also centrally located for easy access to many of the attractions that tourists want to see.

What makes this house unique

As we're in a small fishing village, not a tourist town or gated community, you will have a chance to see what life in Costa Rica is really like. You'll see fishermen walking down the road with their daily catch, kids playing soccer just down the road, locals swimming in the river at the end of the road, Peepo getting a load of sand with his team of oxen, as well as many other local sights. We have lots of birds, iguanas, butterflys, etc. who come to visit daily, as we've spent time improving the gardens around the pool and at the side of the house in order to attract them. You'll always be surrounded by flowers as you float in the private pool or walk through the property. The views of the sun setting over the ocean, from our raised gazebo, are truly stunning. Many guests have told us that it's the 'room' that they use the most.

A perfect birding holiday base!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Lynn & Larry for a wonderful January holiday!

For part of our first time in Costa Rica we were very lucky to spend a week with friends who are seasoned birders and who had been to the country twice before. All four of us were delighted with Casa Sammie, with its excellent opportunities for birding on the beach in front, along the river a few steps away and in the trees on the property - not to mention the proximity of Carrara National Park 10 minutes away! It was so nice to come home to this comfortable, clean house and refreshing pool after a morning in the tropical forest for lunch, a swim, and siesta before venturing out for the afternoon. We enjoyed walking around the corner for a meal in the village and being able to buy fresh caught fish and seafood for memorable dinners by candlelight on the patio. We made a point of having our sundowner drinks in the raised gazebo, while watching the sun set over the Pacific. One morning we took a boat along the Tarcoles River with "Fantastic Birding Tours," a smaller local outfit than the ones that search for crocs and they really were fantastic about finding a variety of birds for us.

Patri was an excellent property manager and lovely to deal with, giving us excellent local tips and instant service when the wifi went down temporarily. Ramon kept the pool in top shape in his own unobtrusive way. With the breeze from the ocean and the shaded areas around the house, we didn't find it necessary to use the A/C but it was nice to know it was available if needed.

What a special place this is! We hope to be able to return!

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you took the time to write this lovely review. It sounds as if you enjoyed all of the things about the area that we love the most. We bought in this area because it's one of the last places in Costa Rica where you can still see Scarlet Macaws every day and, in spite of their loud voices, we're still excited to see them after all these years. We love to hear from people who appreciate what our area has to offer. Patri and Ramon are invaluable to us, as we couldn't do it without them. Thanks again - you're welcome back any time!

great place!!!!!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

For my first trip to Casa Sammie, it was awesome. There were 5 of us staying in the house; 2 in the guest cottage and 3 in the main house. The house had everything we needed, the pool and grounds were beautiful. It is a 10 minute walk into town for groceries and eating out. There was only one place to eat, Chepes and the food was very good. Communication was a bit tough but otherwise a good experience. We did the crocodile tour and the tram tour in the rain forest. I loved the crocodile tour, only saw 2 crocs but tons of beautiful birds. the boat ride itself was really nice. The guides were very knowledgeable. The tram tour was Ok but didnt see anything to speak of; would pass on that next time. We were supposed to do a day tour to a beach for snorkeling, fishing etc with Gino but it got cancelled 2 days in a row because of wind and cloudy seas. I would suggest booking this trip early in your stay in case the weather changes and you run out of time like we did. Patri was very helpful with any concerns or booking tours. Would definitely go again. Loved it .

Casa Sammie, Tarcoles, Costa Rica...Priceless!!!

  • 5 of 5

I'm finally getting around to writing a review of Casa Sammie, Tarcoles, and the wonderful people we met.

When we arrived at Casa Sammie we were pleasantly surprised to see that our accommodations were just as portrayed on VRBO. The place was beautiful, immaculately kept by Ramon, (he was like a ninja, we never knew when he was there but the grounds and the pool were always kept up), he was great. We were soon greeted by Patrice and she was so nice and helpful with her recommendations she immediately made us feel welcomed. Among the things we did (besides enjoy the beautiful pool and gazebo at Casa Sammie), were two of Patrice's recommended excursions, the Crocodile Safari trip and the day trip with Gino. The crocodile trip was very interesting, and we saw a lot of fauna and crocodiles but our most notable thing we did...a day out with Gino. I'm only allowed so many letters in this post so I can't describe all that we did, but trust me it was awesome. Gino was so knowledgeable and such a great ambassador for Tarcoles and Costa Rica. He came down to Casa Sammie to discuss what we would like to do and we decided on hiking, fishing, and snorkeling. We met him and his cousin "Gato" at his boat the next morning and headed out to a beautiful secluded cove/beach where we hiked up through the rain forest, it was incredible, there was so much to see, an unbelievable diversity of plant life, including a certain tree (Pura Vida Gino). Gino picked up one of the many "halloween crabs" and handed it to my brave daughter, it was a great photo and memory. We next went snorkeling and saw many beautiful fish, it was awesome, when we were done, Gato was waiting for us with some lobsters he hand picked off the ocean floor, then to the beach where Gino and Gato cooked them up...delicious! My son was cool enough to try and surf behind one of Gato's friends fishing boats that happened to be in the cove, but Gato was the man, he surfed behind the boat in style. We went out fishing and then headed back to Tarcoles. Soon Gino came down to the Casa and prepared fresh fish ceviche, my first time to eat it and we all loved it, I'll be making ceviche the Gino way from now on. Maria, Gino's wife, was gracious enough to come down to Sammie and bring a delicious chicken dish she prepared for us and we appreciated that very much. We enjoyed the fact that Jaco was close enough to drive to if we wanted some of the "tourist life", but our stay in Tarcoles was truly Pura Vida! Thank you all!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for taking the time to submit this great review. I have to say that we love Gino's tour as much as you did and go almost every time we're there. When we had our 5 young grandkids there several years ago we went on a different tour every day for a week. They all said that the day with Gino was their favourite! It's certainly a taste of the "real" Costa Rica. Thanks again & we hope to have you back at a future time!

Amazing vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Casa Sammie and Costa Rica were everything we had hoped for! Our only complaint is that we didn't get to stay longer! We booked our reservations well in advance and therefore had many correspondences with Patri, the property manager. She was unfailingly prompt and incredibly helpful, arranging things at the house (our arrival, car rental, groceries, etc.) as well as a number of tours. She answered a multitude of questions as we prepared for our trip and was kind enough to fax directions to the house to our rental car company! Additionally, she was instrumental in getting our lost luggage to us. Without her persistence in her dealings with American, I suspect we would have been back in the States before the suitcase was delivered!

Casa Sammie is exactly as advertised, convenient, comfortable and very relaxing. We enjoyed the view from the gazebo (I spent many a wonderful morning up there, sipping coffee and listening to the ocean) and the "commute" to the beach couldn't be beat. We loved being in the heart of real Costa Rica and very much enjoyed meeting the locals: breakfast at the local soda, purchasing fish at the Fish Co-op. We especially enjoyed the Tico Tour Patri arranged for us with Gino. He is truly a delight! As is his wife Maria who cooked us dinner after our Tico Tour and brought us traditional tamales on Christmas. We would also highly recommend the Crocodile Tour, Discovery Horseback Tours and a guided tour through Carara (again, thanks go to Patri for arranging our guide- turns out he was Gino's brother!) Manuel Antonio was also nice but quite crowded. I fulfilled my desire to see monkeys and a sloth (two actually) and although I'm not a birder, I may need to become one as I thoroughly enjoyed all our bird sightings, including scarlet macaws, toucans, herons, egrets, anhingas, roseate spoonbills, pelicans...

Thank you Lynn and Larry for sharing your beautiful home with us and thank you Patri for all you did to make us comfortable during our stay!

Truly home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first stay at Casa Sammie, and hopefully won't be our last. Everyone was great to work with - Lynn and Larry did a great job answering our questions while deciding to rent, Patri was fantastic to work with, and it was a pleasure to watch Ramon caring for Lynn's garden. The pictures are fantastic, but don't begin to live up to the real thing. The house is comfortably furnished and contains everything necessary for a short or extended stay. Casa Sammie sits at the end of a quiet road in the fishing village of Tarcoles, and is a short drive to Jaco for those who prefer the "touristy" feel. Knowing Spanish may be helpful but we got along fine with the dozen or so words we knew. Patri picked up groceries for us before we arrived, so it was really like a home away from home. We did not rent a car, but Patri and Gilbert made sure we got to see everything we were interested in.

During our stay, we rode horses through the Mangrove forest with Kevin, took a crocodile tour (which was incredible), went hiking in Carara National Park and climbed the waterfall, and spent another day at Manuel Antonio. We had plenty of time to wander on the beach, and highly recommend Gino's Tico Style Tours. I don't think anything beats freshly caught lobster grilled on the beach, hearing the monkeys and Toucans in the background, while watching a group of local brothers play soccer on the beach. We celebrated our anniversary while at Casa Sammie, and Patri did a great job helping my husband arrange a sunset dinner at Villa Caletas. To top off the trip, we spent the final day zip lining near Jaco with Rainforest Arial Tram, where we got a lesson about local flora, insects and snakes, which was topped off by zip lining down the mountain. The views were absolutely breathtaking!

Each day was finished off by cooling off in the pool, watching the iguanas in the yard, and watching the scarlet macaws overhead. Yes, we sat at the pool and watched the macaws, which was incredible!

My husband and I have traveled fairly extensively through Europe, the Caribbean, to Canada, and through the US, and frequently rent homes to stay in. Casa Sammie has been the most comfortable accommodating home we have ever rented, and we hope to make this the first of many trips!

Lucky #7 - Pura Vida indeed!!

  • 5 of 5

For our 7th stay at Casa Sammie we opted for something different-we visited during the last two weeks in November-tail end of the rainy season and we loved it. Yes it rained while we were there, mostly in the afternoon, but the rain never interfered with the enjoyment of our trip. We planned our outings for early morning, which we usually do anyway and we were not rained out once. Did not try dancing in the rain-did try swimming in the rain in the Casa Sammie pool, a wonderful experience though it cannot surpass a full moon night swim. Went for a walk in the rain-a refreshing experience. So if you are planning a trip to Casa Sammie and December to March are booked-try November, you will enjoy it! For this trip we had our friend Sandi join us for her first trip to Costa Rica. One of the pleasures of Tarcoles is the ability to mingle with the locals in a non-tourist setting. Sandi is an avid bingo player so on a Sunday afternoon we went to a fundraising bingo at the Tarcoles school. To be able to make a small contribution to the local community while having an enjoyable outing was heart warming. Special thanks to Lourdes for translating during the bingo games. Having Sandi with us for her first visit gave us an opportunity to re-experience our first trip to Costa Rica in 2007. We did the Jungle Crocodile Safari boat trip again-it was better than we remember from 2007. We had a knowledgeable guide, saw Howler monkeys for the first time, lots of birds and of course crocodiles. We found a great guide, Maurice Vazquez, for a trek in Carara Park. The best way to experience the park is with a guide. Maurice took us on a trail in the north part of the park which offered great opportunity for wildlife viewing - saw Howler monkeys again. Maurice did a great job taking photos through his spotting scope using my Blackberry camera. Keep in mind that these two great outings are only a 10 minute drive from Casa Sammie! Maurice Vazquez: great knowledge+good English=excellent guide. We left his contact information in the Casa Sammie book. Maurice also contributed to a new #1 highlight for our Costa Rica vacations. Maurice took us on a night hike on Playa Heramosa. While a thunderstorm raged far out on the Pacific we got to see a sea turtle laying eggs-repeating a ritual that has gone on for thousands of years. An experience hard to describe in words. What Costa Rica has to offer within a short distance of Casa Sammie never ceases to amaze. We shall return!

Owner's Response: WOW! What can we say but a huge Thank You for another wonderful review. You are exactly the kind of people who we try to attract - people who are not nervous to get out into the community, and surrounding countryside, and experience the "real" Costa Rica. We really appreciate that you took the time to write this great review and certainly look forward to your return visit.

Map

Car: recommended

DISTANCE FROM NEAREST AIRPORT - 1 1/4 hr. by car --

CAR RECOMMENDED? - Yes --

We are located 1 1/4 hrs. drive west of the international airport in San Jose, in the town of Tarcoles. It is about 20 min. north of the major tourist city, Jaco, which is known for its great surfing. As an alternative, you can also drive from the international airport in Liberia, Guanacaste to Casa Sammie in 2 1/2 hrs.

We recommend that you have a car for more flexibility in visiting the many natural areas and parks within an easy drive of the house, such as the Tarcoles river, Carara Park and spectacular waterfalls. Manuel Antonio Park, a beautiful reserve where you can see monkeys, sloths and iguanas is a scenic 1 3/4 hrs. drive south.
