Sawyer Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

'The cutest getaway cottage ever'

That's what Better Homes and Gardens magazine called this little retreat when it was featured a few years back.

We call it the the perfect place for TWO Lovers, TWO Friends, Couples, Sisters, Brothers... Rediscover the bond that brought you close in the first place, connect like you've always wanted to, gain a new perspective with that special person in your life.

Celebrate? Escape? No matter where you are in life, some alone-time away can make all the difference in the world. Intrigued? read on...

TWO is located on a secluded 1 acre wooded property, on the northern end of Harbor Country in the town of Sawyer. The Warren Dunes 1900 acres is right next door, and the beach is about a four block walk. A produce market and butcher shop are on each corner, so fresh provisions are never far away. Oh, and the incredible sunsets... It might just be the best memory of your stay!

TWO is a special little place. It has a soulful feeling. Maybe it's the 100 year old trees surrounding the house, perhaps it's the original pine floors and architectural details that date back to the 1920's. Charm yes, but this is not your typical 'cottage.' The house had a complete architect-designed remodel in 1997 and has been kept true to its principles ever since. Private hot tub, screened porch, it's all here for you to enjoy. The moment you walk through the door, you'll be reminded of what a great little hideaway you have found!

History

Known as 'LePin Cottage' (cottage in the pines) this humble abode was built in the 1920's and was used as a grape pickers' shack for the seasonal harvest. The home had no running water or electricity, and occupants were resolved to use the (still on property) outhouse when nature called. As the area developed and the vineyards moved inland, the house was abandoned and remained an empty shell for many years. In 1995 the house was purchased by an architect and his wife, and they set out to make the 'Cottage in the Pines' their family retreat. The renovation was nothing short of amazing. The house was put up on stilts and a new foundation was installed. The entire roof and joists were removed to make way for the new second floor, and an accompanying shed was located in nearby Indiana and transported to the property. The original windows and pine floors were saved, as was the footprint of the structure. The results were stunning. So much so that the home caught the attention of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, which paid homage to the renovation with a six page feature in the July of 1998 issue. Today the story continues. Each and every weekend, new memories and stories are created, as couples, and friends relax and enjoy this special place.

About Eileen

We love to travel; been all over the country. We consider ourselves to have a keen sense of what works and what doesn't. Also we often travel with our dog. While we have been to many places, we always love to come back to this this little cottage. It is a calming sanctuary, and we're sure after a stay here you will feel the same way.

Eileen purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Eileen chose Sawyer

Sawyer is one of those great destinations, that once you find it, you hope not too many others follow suit. The restaurants, shops, beaches, culture and all around vibe are unmatched. This little place in the woods has been described as being a storybook cottage, and we couldn't agree more. It oozes with cuteness and is the ultimate escape from the everyday.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is super clean and updated, not your typical musty cottage. The place is compact and efficient, but does not feel cramped. The property is a gorgeous one-acre secluded, wooded, property that is a very short walk to the Warren Dunes. It is the real deal when it comes to the Michigan cottage experience. The house has an antique wood burning stove that is perfect on those cool and winter evenings. To sum it up, the cottage is romantic, the perfect place for two! A great little hideaway!

Guestbook comments from the owner

great and exactly what we needed. We'd love to come back at some

point.

Great Getaway! Great Little Cabin in the Woods!

  • 5 of 5
To quote my wife, "Three wonderful days in a cozy Michigan cottage with my amazing husband. Biked & hiked in Warren Dunes State Park, spent the evenings by the fire & in the hot tub. Great little getaway" The cottage and amenities were at advertised and much more more. We enjoyed our three days in Sawyer and at the Dunes. Look forward to doing it again soon. Back a few days and miss it

Exactly what the doctor ordered

Cute small cottage in the woods walking distance to Warren Dunes State Park. Short drive to all that harbor Country has to offer. Owners very friendly and accomodative (and helpful in picking out a good anniversary dinner for us!). I highly recommend for anyone that isn't intent on being RIGHT ON THE BEACH in this area. We preferred being in the woods.

Great getaway close to home

  • 5 of 5
Great little cottage. The owners seem to take pride in the way it is maintained. Great upper level sleeping areas, but the stairs are steep. During our 3 night stay we thought of ways to move the stairs so they would not be as steep, something you would only do with your own cottage.

We will definitely return.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We hope that you can make it back in the fall or winter, as it is quite different, but certainly no less beautiful in our neck of the woods. :)

Either friends or lovers will find this house ideal. The quaint, well equipped cottage was splendid for our weekend away. The owner was wonderful with communication. I would recommend Cafe Gulistan in Harbert if you want exotic food.

Great hide way for small family

  • 4 of 5
The Two cottage worked well for my family of three plus our old pooch who happily laid in the soft grass and shade while we grilled and enjoyed the screened in patio and he loves the sand, so the dog beach at Warren which was perfect for us and close by so we did not have to go far and could easily get back to the cottage for our dog or so the LO could nap

We chose to drive over to Warren as the walk on the path was a bit much with our senior pooch and a child in stroller, but is really easy for anyone with no stroller.

Two is a short drive up to St Joseph beachfront, which I highly recommend for small kids. Our DD LOVED the splash pad, play equipment on the beach, and horse carousel at St. Joseph. There's also a children's museum.

Green bush brewing, the Sawyer garden market, infusco coffee and hello donuts all in Sawyer are just a few minutes drive from the cottage and all really great!

Additionally, Tapistry brewing and round barn winery/brewing were any easy short drive and enjoyable places to stop! Tapistry had an entire corner dedicated to kids games and coloring books!

If you are looking for a quaint getaway with some local stops in harbor country this cottage is located close to all of this and is a short drive from Chicago.

The hot tub was a nice bonus for mom and dad after the tot was asleep & it was clean.

The stairs to the loft are a bit steep but the cottage offers a pull out couch to accomadate this on the first level for sleeping and the sky lights in the loft make it feel like a treehouse which was really neat. There is also a Smart tv in the loft and wifi access so while you feel like you are secluded and in a camping type environment you still have the modern amenities, which is a plus for people who have transitioned from camping to cabin and cottage rental like ourselves given the addition to our family and our senior dog

The wall Unit air conditioner kept the cottage very cool too for an August stay which can get humid and the washer and dryer is a nice perk as well along with a clean bathroom

Overall, I would recommend this cottage

Perfect escape

  • 5 of 5
The name says it all - this really is the perfect cottage for two. My husband and I enjoyed this little cottage for a week. We loved how the house is set back from the road and away from the neighboring houses. The back yard was so tranquil and we spent a lot of time there watching birds at the picnic table, on the swing, in the hot tub, etc.

The location is absolutely perfect. We walked down to the beach at the Warren Dunes every day. The proximity to nearby towns was also wonderful. We enjoyed day trips on our bicycles to Three Oaks, Union Pier and New Buffalo. There are excellent and well-marked bicycle trails around the area. Some of our favorite places to visit were Greenbush Brewery and Nani's for hot dogs. Delicious!

Thanks so much Eileen for sharing your lovely cottage. It was nice to escape to the beach for a week!

Owner's Response: I'm soooo glad to hear how much fun you had at our little hideaway in the woods. It's funny how the cottage can feel so remote, yet it's minutes away from great food, superb breweries/wineries, and the BEACH!
Come back anytime... you should see this area in the Fall :)
