PERFECT FOR TWO! A LITTLE HIDEAWAY IN THE WOODS.

Sawyer Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

'The cutest getaway cottage ever'

That's what Better Homes and Gardens magazine called this little retreat when it was featured a few years back.

We call it the the perfect place for TWO Lovers, TWO Friends, Couples, Sisters, Brothers... Rediscover the bond that brought you close in the first place, connect like you've always wanted to, gain a new perspective with that special person in your life.

Celebrate? Escape? No matter where you are in life, some alone-time away can make all the difference in the world. Intrigued? read on...

TWO is located on a secluded 1 acre wooded property, on the northern end of Harbor Country in the town of Sawyer. The Warren Dunes 1900 acres is right next door, and the beach is about a four block walk. A produce market and butcher shop are on each corner, so fresh provisions are never far away. Oh, and the incredible sunsets... It might just be the best memory of your stay!

TWO is a special little place. It has a soulful feeling. Maybe it's the 100 year old trees surrounding the house, perhaps it's the original pine floors and architectural details that date back to the 1920's. Charm yes, but this is not your typical 'cottage.' The house had a complete architect-designed remodel in 1997 and has been kept true to its principles ever since. Private hot tub, screened porch, it's all here for you to enjoy. The moment you walk through the door, you'll be reminded of what a great little hideaway you have found!

History

Known as 'LePin Cottage' (cottage in the pines) this humble abode was built in the 1920's and was used as a grape pickers' shack for the seasonal harvest. The home had no running water or electricity, and occupants were resolved to use the (still on property) outhouse when nature called. As the area developed and the vineyards moved inland, the house was abandoned and remained an empty shell for many years. In 1995 the house was purchased by an architect and his wife, and they set out to make the 'Cottage in the Pines' their family retreat. The renovation was nothing short of amazing. The house was put up on stilts and a new foundation was installed. The entire roof and joists were removed to make way for the new second floor, and an accompanying shed was located in nearby Indiana and transported to the property. The original windows and pine floors were saved, as was the footprint of the structure. The results were stunning. So much so that the home caught the attention of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, which paid homage to the renovation with a six page feature in the July of 1998 issue. Today the story continues. Each and every weekend, new memories and stories are created, as couples, and friends relax and enjoy this special place.

Love to travel, been all over the country. We consider ourselves to have a keen sense of what works and what doesn't. Also we often travel with our dog. While we have been to many places, we always love to come back to this this little cottage. It is a calming sanctuary, and we're sure after a stay here you will feel the same way.

Eileen purchased this cottage in 1997

Sawyer is one of those great destinations, that once you find it, you hope not too many others follow suit. The restaurants, shops, beaches, culture and all around vibe are unmatched. This little place in the woods has been described as being a storybook cottage, and we couldn't agree more. It oozes with cuteness and is the ultimate escape from the everyday.

The house is super clean and updated, not your typical musty cottage. The place is compact and efficient, but does not feel cramped. The property is a gorgeous 1 acre secluded, wooded, property that is a very short walk to the Warren Dunes. It is the real deal when it comes to the Michigan cottage experience. The house has an antique wood burning stove that is perfect on those cool and winter evenings. To sum it up, the cottage is romantic, the perfect place for two! A great little hideaway!

GREAT FAMILY ADVENTURE FROM HOT ARIZONA

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time at the Cabin. It was so cute and relaxing. I enjoyed all the little touches that made us feel like we are staying at a family friends place. The walk to the lake entrance was easy and cool to see all the people playing in the “therapy mud” along the walk. We went that way the first day and the second day we drove less than 5 minutes to the Warren Park entrance. We went to a bar/grill in the next town that was Cubs Themed and had a great home cooked meal the first night and the next day found the mom and pop grocery store in Sawyer where the staff was friendly in the meat counter and tried some homemade sausage and got local wine for an evening cookout. Again all the items needed for grilling were at the cabin…just show up with a bathing suit and food and you are set for a great weekend. One evening we built a fire pit and kids roasted marshmallows. We would defiantly do this again. They owners were great and the place was ready and waiting for us when we arrived.

AWESOME!

  • 5 of 5
“Two” is a charming little rental on a shady wooded lot with tons of privacy. Everything is as advertised in the description. 5 to 20 minutes from: New Buffalo, Three Oaks, St. Joe, 8 winery’s, at least 2 breweries, fresh blueberries, and most importantly the beach! A 20 minute walk gets you from the Cottage to the beach, or drive via Warren Dunes, or hit one of the many public access beaches nearby. Try Lydia’s for breakfast and Meza Luna for dinner. I would definitely recommend this place to friends. The Cottage has everything you’ll need for a week’s stay, so pack light, chill out, and go dig your toes in the sand.

PERFECT RELAXING HIDEAWAY

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed in this cute little cottage for a long weekend, and we loved everything about it. It was a great location -- close to the dunes, restaurants, fresh produce and meat markets, but quiet and hidden away at the same time. The kitchen was well stocked with the basics, so we took advantage of that and cooked some great meals with delicious local meat and veggies. The hot tub was perfect, because it was still a bit chilly at night, and our dog loved running around the yard. It was a perfect little getaway from Chicago, and we will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Glad to hear you were able to find the fresh local produce and meat. We LOVE the butcher on the corner (a mainstay for this area for many years now).
Fall is also a beautiful season here, be sure to let us know if you're planning a fall weekend. :)

FANTASTIC FOURTH!

  • 4 of 5
My fiancé and I stayed here over Fourth of July weekend and it was a wonderful stay. The house is so perfect, comfy bed, well stocked. The setting, the beach, the town all created the most relaxing time. My fiancé is a soccer lover so we had to go into town quite a bit to find the World Cup games (no cable at the house) but it was a great excuse to explore Sawyer and New Buffalo. All in all we loved our first visit to Michigan and will definitely be back! One note about beach access- it is definitely walkable to the little trail mentioned in other reviews and takes about 20 min- but seems nearly impossible to walk with beach chairs, umbrella, coolers, etc. Much easier to pay the entry fee and drive to the park if you like to pack heavily for an entire day at the beach :]. Also if you plan to go on a holiday weekend- make sure to account for traffic to and from Harbor County- we were stuck on the highway very close to there for at least 40 min each way!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review and kind words. I know what you mean about that traffic during the summer holidays. :(
It's totally worth a trip between holidays, as 4th of July is the busiest time of year.

BEST MINI-HONEYMOON EVER!!!

  • 5 of 5
We had the most incredible time at our stay at the cottage. We wanted a few days to decompress after the whirlwind that was our wedding in Chicago and this was hands down the perfect place. It was a quick walk to the beautiful beach and short drive to Michigan's wine country. The cottage was perfectly sized and had everything we needed. We hope to be back later in the summer and maybe even in the winter for some cross country skiing.

CUTE, BUT NOT VERY QUIET

  • 3 of 5
I rented this cottage for a personal retreat, and even asked the owner if it would be quiet, given its location just off an interstate. The cottage is certainly cute, but it is NOT a quiet retreat/hideaway. Road noise can be quiet loud, and the cottage is much closer to other homes than I had expected. General area is not particularly nice, other than the Dunes park. Few restaurants, grocery store some distance away.

Owner's Response: While we strive to make our home the most attractive rental, and we want our guests to have the experience they're looking for, we assume that they know the resort area called "Harbor Country" is best known for its beaches and dunes, and is extremely popular this time of year. It looks like 75 other guests disagree with this review.
While I have no record of this renter explaining that she was in need for total silence or on Retreat, I do have record of her asking me for a discount because she was a single renter. We obliged given the short timeframe between request and arrival... go figure this would be the 3 star review. Our cottage is on a 1-acre wooded lot, not 3 or 5. The neighbors are 1 acre away, and I might also add, when home it's two adults-no kids.
The Harbor Country Area is known for its Red Arrow Ride that is speckled with antique stores, specialty shops and restaurants as well as its beaches. I suggest for your next trip, consider something much more inland and away from the summer guests flocking to the beach and Lake Michigan.
While I'm glad you enjoyed our home and all its amenities, I'm sorry the area did not work out for you.
