COWBOY PARADISE IN PIONEERTOWN ~ THE OLIVE ADOBE!!!!!!

Joshua Tree House Rental Photos and Description

Walled gardens, private 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, gourmet kitchen (Sleeps 6)

'When I build my own place in the desert, I want it to be just like this.' That’s what people say about our home.

The Olive Adobe is a comfortable, private retreat on 7+ acres, nestled behind terra-cotta walls. 50-year-old, gnarled olive trees, raised perennial beds and pea gravel paths surround the house and every room opens to the outdoors with sliding French doors. Kick back, put your feet up and relax. Lose yourself in a classic novel, gaze at the multiple species of birds from humming to hawk, discover your artist or photographer within.

And after a long day of exploring the local rock formations and petroglyphs, enjoy a toast in fine crystal as you relax next to a crackling avocado wood fire in the outdoor fireplace. As the Milky Way slowly emerges directly above you, stargazing might just become your new passion.

Inside, you’ll find spacious living and morning rooms containing an eclectic mix of cowboy chic antiques and mid-century modern pieces and collectables from our travels around the world. Mexican and Native American pottery and baskets, and colorful serapes create a comfortable, relaxed, 'put your feet up' elegance that makes this charming adobe feel like home. 2 bedrooms open onto a “secret” back garden with a delightful iron bistro table set for two next to the grape arbor. The front bedroom (the owners' personal favorite) is glass on three sides - a former porch - with access to the comfy porch swing facing west for sunset viewing.

There’s even an outdoor shower when you really want to commune with nature!

A fully equipped kitchen is waiting if you want to eat in. Colorful china and bake ware, heavy cutlery and bandana “napkins” make even a simple meal special here – especially when you eat it by the fire, outdoors, under the stars.

Come. Let this place make special memories for you!

We’re only minutes from Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace, but this canyon feels like it’s miles away from everything. Pipes Canyon is bordered by 35,000 acres of “The Pioneertown Mountains Preserve” to the West and 60,000 acres of federal land to the north. It’s isolated, and completely private. It’s like living in your own National Park. There are views of the sawtooth mountains, flat-topped mesas, and impossibly balanced boulders with miles of hiking and riding trails just out the door!! At an elevation of 4000 ft, the summers are cool (10 degrees cooler than Joshua Tree and 15 – 20 degrees cooler than Palm Springs) and winter often brings a dusting of snow.

Whatever your passion, you will find new inspiration at The Olive Adobe in Pioneertown!

We are an architect and an arts administrator from Los Angeles (originally from the East Coast.) We love to cook, and create, and we especially love hosting and entertaining all manner of people. When we were first married, we ran a Bed & Breakfast in midcoast Maine and hosted musicians and artists from around the world. We love to travel, to meet new people and explore new cultures. We've raised 4 children now and we're hosting again - on the Left Coast this time, trading in the blueberry muffins and maple syrup of our youths for fresh, local orange juice, piquant guacamole and tequila with limes.

We searched Palm Springs for the perfect house for several years, frustrating scores of real estate agents, and then we fell in love with this improbable place, and with this quirky, comfortable, and very special house, with this canyon and it's human and animal inhabitants. Pioneertown is unlike anyplace else - a pastiche of leathery wild western cowboy chic, edgy tattooed musicians and looney contemporary artists. The scenery calls everyone here to stare slack-jawed at some of nature's finest work. The air is clean and the skies are clear here, and for the open minded, stereotypes and human histories are quickly forgotten and friendships are easily made. The locals are bound to this special place of harsh contrasts - tawny, brittle dried sage against delicate, boldly colored wildflowers; shards of crunchy, decomposed granite against impossible stacks of enormous cantilevered, vanilla boulders; rattling pit vipers and tarantulas against iridescent hummingbirds and America's largest, languid desert cats. Darkness comes quickly here but not without a robust explosion of shrieking color, and then - stars... More stars than you remember as a child - by a factor of hundreds. Each season brings new wonders. This canyon is as ancient as the earth itself - primordial and at the same time made fiercely contemporary by the people who have settled here and call this place home.

Be yourself here. Or come and try on someone else here. Let the power of this place reach inside of you, and allow yourself to relax into everything it has to offer. Drink the delicious, deep, rare water. Walk the dusty trails. Listen to the warm wind. This is a place to relax and rediscover yourself, you special friends and your family. Put your feet up on the Vietnamese ox yoke that is our coffee table. Wrap yourself in a traditional serape outside and enjoy the fire and a rich cup of coffee. Put on your favorite jeans, your favorite boots, and your favorite tunes and dance under the stars until the moon rises, and then sets again.

Make this your own cowboy paradise and return home rested and renewed.

ONE OF THE BEST

  • 5 of 5
We came here to hike Joshua Tree National Park and the surrounding canyons and stayed at the Olive Adobe for a full week. Being in the desert and far from civilization, we did not expect much, but we were very pleasantly surprised from the moment we walked through the gate of the walled-in Adobe House. We have rented many vacation homes and this is one of the best! We were greeted by a friendly neighbor who helps to manage the rental and the owners made us feel welcome. There were a bottle of wine and peanut brittles, along with a platter of delicious pears, waiting for us. We discovered scones (Tony's Scony's) in the freezer -- these were to die for! The house was beautifully designed in the arts and crafts style, the furnishings were comfortable, and the garden was the best. Highly recommended.

EXQUISITE!

  • 5 of 5
I have a list of ‘50 things to do before turning 50’ and one of those was to rent a house thru VRBO – how special that I uncovered the most perfect home-away-from-home on my first try!
We could not have felt more at home on Acacia and could have stayed all week!

Thank you, also, for the wine, the scones, the firewood and the hiking directions – we took advantage of everything.

BEAUTIFUL, STRESS FREE PLACE TO ELOPE.

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from our week at the Olive Adobe. We had been planning to elope for a while, and decided a few weeks before arriving to get married while there. From our first phone conversation, Paul and Tony were so helpful in making our little wedding wonderful. Paul is a minister, and was our non-denominational officiant. Paul and Tony provided us with a fabulous, gourmet, catered meal, prepared by Paul. Tony and Paul moved the long table outside near the outdoor adobe fireplace, blazing with mesquite, set the table, and signed our marriage license. We were left to enjoy our lovely meal with my parents and our (not little) children while the sun set in Pipes Canyon. It was amazing! Tony even ordered the wedding cake for us from a local bakery that he knew was good. Believe me, I did not have to pay even remotely close to what most places would have charged me for this wedding. What impresses me the most, is that even though Tony and Paul were total strangers, they immediately became enthusiastically invested in making our wedding wonderful, and just what we wanted, without ever being intrusive. It's pretty rare to see people so expertly and effortlessly navigate such an important, and emotionally charged event as a tiny intimate wedding. Also, the Adobe and it's decor totally reflect the effortless cool of it's owners. Everything is beautiful, cowboy elegant, and authentic, without being fussy. The location is magical. There are hikes right out the door which rival anything you will see in the National Park. We were in a Joshua tree forest, saw petroglyphs, arrowheads, an almost extinct desert tortoise, jack rabbits, quails, mountain lion and coyote tracks, climbed on giant rock piles, and explored the 100 year old ruins of their adjacent ranch. What a great trip! We are so grateful to have found this special place.

EVEN NICER THAN WE EXPECTED

  • 5 of 5
4 of us had a great time at the Olive Adobe. We entertained friends who were staying at another nearby home on one of the nights and eating at the long table outdoors was really great. We drove 10 minutes to Pappy and Harriet's, which was a treat. The home is very well appointed and impeccably stylish without being un-usable. We didn't use the second official room as the sun room had such great light and was perfectly private. We'll be back for another relaxing stay soon.
