“If your image of Mallorca is flamenco nights and fish and chips, you should take a drive north from Palma on the C711. As if by magic, you'll emerge from a tunnel under the mountains into the seductive town of Soller, its tangle of narrow streets cunningly configured by the island's Moorish medieval rulers to repel coach parties. This is the back-country Mallorca that so beguiled Frederic Chopin and Robert Graves (not to mention Michael Douglas and Claudia Schiffer), and nearby Port de Soller is a perfect springboard into the Serra de Tramuntana, the compact range of dove-grey peaks that crowds in along the southern horizon. Each morning, the sun scales these hills and floods the scooped-out harbour with light: your signal to hop aboard the rattly tram to Soller and stride straight out into the mountains. Alternatively, there are coastal rambles through olive groves and orange blossom, rock roses and orchids. It's lush as lush can be.” Sunday Times, 25 April 2004
