Casual, affordable and oh so conveniently located, Nifty Thrifty is the answer for singles, couples and small families seeking elbow room on a visit to fun and funky Eugene. Park the car in the attached garage: Around the corner (29th and Willamette) you’ll find a gourmet market, and a variety of restaurants and shops. Bring a bike or take advantage of the two bus lines that are just steps from your door – either way, you’re within minutes of Fifth Street Market, the Hult Center, Saturday Market, the University of Oregon campus and Hayward Field, or Autzen Stadium. It’s only 20 minutes by car to the Lorane Valley wine country, less than 60 to the whitewater beauty of the McKenzie River, and less than 90 to hike or ski the Cascades. Nothing’s out of reach from this location!
The one-story 1950s-vintage house features two bedrooms, a full bath, hardwood floors, a fireplace, a private fenced and landscaped backyard (roses!) and a laundry. The full-sized kitchen is equipped with all the appliances you’ll need to pull together breakfast at the dinette or serve dinner in the dining room. If there’s business on your schedule, there’s a workstation in the master bedroom and WiFi throughout the house. The neighborhood is quiet, safe, friendly, and eclectic. You might hear the neighbor’s chickens softly clucking now and then, but don’t worry – no roosters!
Said a recent guest: 'Nifty Thrifty was the perfect choice...ideally located, close to shopping, public transit, the university, and Amazon Park with its bicycle & running trails, children's playground and a great dog park. The home is spotless with all the extras one could need, even a garage for the car. The back yard was perfect for our pooches, completely fenced with plants and lawn and a small patio with a table and chairs. The neighborhood is extremely quiet with very little traffic other than the local residents. All in all, we couldn't have been more pleased...and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a vacation rental in Eugene.'

With my husband and two teenage children, I've traveled the world -- always on a budget, preferring to spend my money on interesting locations and new experiences instead of luxurious lodging. I've brought my personal travel philosophy to Nifty Thrifty, where you'll have a place of your own with all the comforts of home. And, thanks to our very reasonable rates, you'll have the extra spending money you need to make your visit to Eugene and the Willamette Valley memorable. When you stay at Nifty Thrifty, you're not dealing with a distant owner. My family and I live just seven blocks away, and we're always happy to answer a question, solve a problem, or make a suggestion. Come visit us! We know you'll be pleased!
The Owner purchased this house in 2000
This house was in the family and just too sweet to let go. It's perfectly located for anybody coming to Eugene for any reason, and it's our pleasure to share it with you! Check our over 65 five-star reviews to see the many ways that Nifty Thrifty pleases its guests and leaves them promising to book again soon.
If you've ever wished you could be a local, just for the length of your stay, Nifty Thrifty lets you do that. Neighbors will nod and wave, you'll see a variety of people passing on bikes or on foot on this quiet street, and when you venture forth to shop or find a meal, you'll be taking the same steps your neighbors do day after day. Have a conversation at one of the two bus stops that are each less than a block away. Pick up your morning coffee at the bakery/deli, browse the farmer's market (in summer), select something delicious to bring home from the best markets in town, have a beer at the sushi bar or a cocktail at a stylish restaurant -- it's all just two blocks from your home-away-from-home!
We ventured here from a faraway land – Oz. We truly enjoyed our stay here and wish it could have been longer. However, moving on is life on the "Wicked" stage. Wishing you all the best! Dancing through life, Justin, Ryan, and Ryan Patrick.
I spent the month of February at "Nifty Thrifty." I've stayed at a number of VRBO/Homeaway locations-all very good-but none better than this. This is about as good as it gets. This small 2-bedroom home, with attached garage, provided me with everything I needed. It's conveniently located with restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance. It's also located only three miles south of downtown. If you want information on where to eat or visit, Ellen, the owner, is more than happy to accommodate. I'll be back.
This was our second time renting Nifty Thrifty and we had an equally great stay. Market of Choice on Christmas Eve is a site to behold. We were able to cook and have my brother and family as well as my mom come to us for Christmas breakfast and we were only a few blocks from them and great restaurants for other meals.
A treasure!! Thank you Ellen!
My parents stayed at the Nifty Thrifty over Thanksgiving this year. They loved the location and the house was very clean and comfortable (and cute!). They ended up staying a few extra days, and we really appreciated Ellen's flexibility with this on such short notice. They had a great time and we highly recommend this vacation rental. We would definitely rent it again. Thank you, Ellen!!
We visited Eugene to visit with family for a week as part of a longer trip and were looking for a vacation rental to call home for a bit. "Nifty Thrifty" as Ellen calls it fit the bill. The backyard was very nice and secluded, the house was well maintained and was a nice size. Pretty much anything that you might need was stocked already, but we added a few things in our stay as well. Just a 5 minute walk away is an excellent grocery store "Market of Choice," which is basically like a better Whole Foods or Trader Joes. The Amazon park is within walking distance too, but that is a bit further. Centrally located, Nifty Thrifty is a good value in a good location.
My wife and I were in Eugene to visit son and family who live but a half mile from this house. It was a great option for us, close and very affordable. But when we arrived, we quickly discovered what a great choice we had made. Nifty Thrifty is a very neat house, clean and well equipped with everything from kitchen supplies, bath and bed linens, full laundry and comfortable furniture. It was close to restaurants and grocery stores, an urgent care facility, auto repair, retail shops and a beautiful city park. Owner was most helpful and welcoming. We will certainly plan to stay here each time we visit Eugene and will probably plan our trip around the availability of this very comfortable accommodation.
Just emailing Ellen to ask about staying again at her great house when I discovered my original review must not have gotten posted.
We three (my husband, dog and I) had a wonderful visit early June to Nifty Thrifty. Do not think that the fact that this home is indeed an excellent value, that it is in anyway lacking. The home is so clean and comfortable. The yard is inviting and (in early June at least) fantastic to spend time in), and the neighborhood provides you with a variety of restaurants, a great hiking path, dog park, and shopping in easy walking distance. A quick car ride and you are on campus, or downtown, or at a winery. Truly this is a wonderful home to stay in. We are so hoping to spend another wonderful few days there soon.
In-town sights and activities: Eugene Saturday Market, Oregon Country Fair (July), UO Football, US Track and Field Trials and the Pre Classic meet, wine-tasting at King Estate and many other wineries, live theater, UO art and natural history museums, Fifth Street Market (destination shopping), Art and the Vineyard (July), and Mt. Pisgah Arboretum (hiking, bird-watching, swimming hole).
Out of town but nearby: McKenzie River (whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, touring, hiking, Willamette Pass (downhill and cross-country skiing), Cottage Grove (covered bridges), Corvallis (OSU and downtown shopping), and much more!
