Guestbook comments from the owner

Well it's time to go home. It was a great Memorial Day weekend and the weather cooperated. We golfed at the local course and spent the next day fishing on White Lake. It was a little windy, so not too many fish were caught. Today is our son's 21st birthday so we plan to picnic on Lake Michigan to celebrate. This is a very nice, clean home in a beautiful setting.

Wonderful Property

  • 5 of 5

This is a long over due review and so very deserving of this property and of the owners Jim and Doris.

We were making a last minute get away out of Chicago, and like to bring our (not so little) dogs with us. We have used home away before for other properties, but loved their pictures and the ideas of walks and the beach and night fires, even when we booked in the late part of October. It was everything as described in the property listing.

Their paper work was prompted and contacting them was easy. The directions to the property were easy and great, even at night. And when we woke the next morning what a beautiful sight we saw. The beautiful November clouds on the little black lake were breath taking. The dog run was perfect. Their endless back yard that blended right into Hoffmaster State Park trails that took you right to Lake Michigan was awesome.

The house was a little big for just the two of us and our dogs, but none the less... perfect. It had everything needed to make a great stay. Clean and well maintained, all the kitchenware and appliances were in great working order. Attached garage was convenient. Washer and Dryer were easily accessible and better than the ones I have at home.

We didn't venture away from the property to eat at any local restaurants, we were so wonderfully content staying at the house.

Jim and Doris stopped by to make sure everything was going well and to see if we needed anything. They are very delightful. We could have talked all day.

We would definitely recommend this property and look forward in returning in the fall again. Although, we don't want to recommend it too much, they might get too booked up.!!! Thanks Again Jim and Doris for making us and our four legged family feeling welcome. We still have your Christmas card still hanging on our fridge.

Great place and wide variety of things to do

  • 5 of 5

The house was very clean, comfortable and well equipped. Being from West Michigan we were just looking for a place to get away and have a change of scenery. We loved the fact that there so many different things to do. We went kayaking, canoeing, hiking and walking along the beach of Lake Michigan. We played Ping-Pong, watched TV and played board games. We had family come out for supper, grilled burgers and had a campfire. It was just what our family needed! Doris was very helpful and accommodating. Would not hesitate to come recommend to anyone, and hope to return.

Doris and Jim's rental was incredible. The home was extremely clean and very comfortable. The front porch was the thing I enjoyed the most with...constant breeze..morning sunrise...birds chirping as well as the ducks...!!!!

Hopefully we will return again in the near future.

Thank you Doris and Jim...

Best kept secret!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful trip to the Western shores of Michigan. We had no idea we

would be seeing such clean beaches with the white sand and dunes. It is so

much easier to get to than heading to the East coast. The property was great.

Wonderfully stocked with cooking utensils, dishes, and plenty of items to use for

activities. I would highly recommend this location for a get away for anyone who

enjoys the beach and having many different locations to take day trips to. The hosts were very gracious and welcoming and started the week off on a very

pleasant note. Lemon Creek winery was a pleasant afternoon stop over and the

"dog beach" was a fun excursion for Shamrock. Pints and Quarts was a very

nice eatery and good atmosphere for supper. Rain put a damper on one day but

I am sure the blueberry fields welcomed it. Our only regret was being about 2

weeks too early for fresh picked blueberries. Next year JULY!

Owner's Response: These vacationers had the right idea...get out and experience West Michigan. Their list is only the tip of the iceberg. Many of our guest return year after year and comment that they never get bored. Summer is the best time for enjoying Lake Michigan, the beaches and fruit crops but it's also fun to experience the changing of seasons. Spring is especially nice if one enjoys wildflowers and migratory birds. The Fall colors are fantastic in early October and winter is a great time for cross country skiing/snowshoeing in Hoffmaster, curling up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book or taking a ride by Lake Michigan to see the beautiful icebergs. We appreciate each and every one of our renters and are grateful when they take the time to share their experiences with other who are considering staying.

Perfect Get-away

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a clean, quiet getaway where we could relax, enjoy time with family and take our dog along too. This spot was perfect. The house was equipped with everything we needed for our 6 days from laundry detergent to beach toys. It was clean and very comfortable. We ate in town a couple times and cooked in as well. The trails into the state park at the back of the yard were well marked and gave us lots of room to wander with Guinness. The walk to Lake Michigan was pretty easy. The little lake out front was exactly as described - mucky and weedy but the bluegills were biting. We had beautiful sunrises, so relaxing watching the ducks on the water. One bit of advice, use the canoe instead of the rowboat if you want to go fishing. I laughed until I cried as I watched my husband and brother's first (and last) attempt to get out in the rowboat - too shallow, they scraped along the bottom and the oars brought up weeds & muck.. The canoe, however, skimmed right along. We rented a pontoon boat one day at Grand Haven Boat Rental - very nice - and cruised Spring Lake. We shopped a little in Grand Haven, saw the musical fountain show, went to Kruse Park in Muskegon where dogs are welcomed. All in all a wonderful time - we came back thoroughly refreshed. Doris and Jim, we very much appreciate your making this wonderful home available to people like us and we hope to be back soon.

Couldn't ask for more!

What a wonderful vacation experience! Absolutely everything we needed/wanted was in the house. Even the sheets and towels were extra nice. The house is clean and inviting. We felt at home right away. The hike to Lake Michigan is picturesque and interesting--just right for a couple of reforming couch potatoes. Our kids are photographers, and Little Black Lake and Lake Michigan provided ample subject matter. There's plenty to do within just a few miles--shopping, golf, mini golf, restaurants, plus all the hiking, swimming, etc. Our hosts were accessible and incredibly accommodating. Truly, everything about this home exceeded our expectations. We'd rent here again in a heartbeat!

Our area has something for everyone. The main attraction of course is Lake Michigan with it's 200 foot high sand dunes spectacular sunrises, sunsets & singing sand beaches. (20 minute hike from the house)

Our home is across the street from Little Black Lake but we own 100 feet of private access to the lake. Walk down our dock and use either our, canoe, kayaks or row boat. They are all included in the rental price. Take a hike through Hoffmaster Park or ride our bikes on the Spring Lake bike path which begins just 1/2 mile from our rental.

You'll feel like you're 'away from it all' but restaurants, shopping centers and fun activities for the whole family are just minutes away.

Although Little Black Lake is a shallow weedy lake, the water quality is excellent. It is wonderful for kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Powerboats are not allowed on Little Black Lake. Also, for swimming we recommend going to one of the beautiful Lake Michigan beaches in our area

Other Activities: Kayaking, Canoeing, Bird watching, Hiking, Hot Dog Roasts around the Fire, Watching Beautiful sun Rises Over Little Black lake, Taking in Spectacular Sun Sets Over Lake Michigan, Charter Fishing, Michigan's Adventure, Watching Kite Boarders at the Lake Michigan Beaches, Walking the Grand Haven, Muskegon and Ferrysbug Piers, Taking scenic Photographs, Grand Haven's Musical Fountain, Muskegon's Art Museum, Silver Sides Submarine, Fricano's Pizza, Docker's Restaurant, Craigs Cruisers. Grand Haven's Coast Guard Festival. Walking the board walk in Grand Haven, Miss Lisa's Ice cream in Ferrysburg, Jilly's Glass in Muskegon. Visiting U-Pick Berry Farms. The list goes on and on...

Golf: Oak ridge golf course is a great public course about 1 mile from the rental. It is well established, very beautiful and challenging. Other courses to check out are Stone Gate, Grand Haven Country Club, Muskegon Country Club. All within 10 miles.

Ski: The cross country skiing is wonderful in Hoffmaster State Park
