We chose this home for an extended family vacation on the Big Island after our first choice closer to Kona fell through; turns out to have been for the best as this home was fantastic and provided an excellent base for touring the island and was a peaceful, gorgeous location for just relaxing and enjoying the sunsets and amenities of the home. Our stay was not without some challenges, the first involved an invasion of mice owing to unusual amounts of rain for the time of year; being intended for open-air living (i.e. doors and windows always open, no A/C), it was tough to keep the little friends out of the house entirely, but kudos to the manager and staff for doing their best to address the situation. The second challenge was a main drain clog that led to backed up toilets in two bathrooms; quite unpleasant but the manager worked the phones until a plumber could come out to rectify. They did an excellent and unobtrusive job of cleaning the bathrooms and restoring the systems, so what could have been a disaster ended up being a minor nuisance. Now for the many positives: the pool was terrific and used extensively by the whole family; the rooms were huge, comfortable and very tastefully decorated; the kitchen was well-stocked and allowed us to easily prepare many meals for our large group; and the volcano, ocean and sunset views were simply amazing, we spent many if not most of our hours at the house outside on the multiple patios enjoying the incredible scenery. The nearly 2,000 foot elevation of the home not only made for cooler conditions but a stunning perch for viewing a large chunk of the island. While Kohala is pretty remote (don't forget anything at the grocery store!), we quickly adjusted to slightly longer commutes to the island sites and appreciated the privacy and peacefulness of the location. Rea is a great owner and Audrey was a very helpful on-site manager, we would be very happy to stay in this lovely home again someday.
A wonderful place to stay -- a beautiful, spacious, well-equipped house in an amazing setting. As one reviewer said, the pictures don't begin to capture the beauty of this place. Owner and caretaker were also very helpful and accommodating. We used the tennis courts and pool every day but also were well positioned for many excursions. The best beaches are within 20 minutes as is Waimea, which offers some great restaurants (Merriman's), farmers market and a large supermarket.
My family and I spent our 2011 Christmas at Kohala Ranch Retreat. It was a perfect spot for our family! This home is beautiful, and the view is breathtaking!! Being on the ranch, we felt we were in our own world! The photos don't do it justice! We spent most of our days, relaxing in the hot tub, swimming in the pool, playing tennis, and reading and talking while enjoying the beautiful gardens and the incredibly view. The house was clean, and well maintained, and the management was very helpful whenever we had a question or concern. The size of the home enabled our large group to have their own space, and quiet times. The kitchen was very functional, and well equipped. Being on "the ranch" enabled us to have a totally private escape holiday! The only negative was the wind. Although it was not always blowing, we did experience a few days when it really did blow. Saying this, it still was warm, and it didn't prevent us from enjoying ourselves. The owner of this home was always prompt when returning emails, and answering questions. She was very pleasant to deal with! I would definitely recommend this home to others!
I just spent the first 9 days of 2012 with my kids, parents, brother and an array of in-laws in this treasure 1500ft above the Pacific. We were all blown away by the serenity and mystique of the setting and the luxuries of the property. I can't imagine coming back and staying anywhere else but Kohala Ranch. The house must be 10,000 sq. ft. and the lanai another few thousand. It's a palace overlooking the Pacific ocean. All the best beaches are within 10-15 minutes and there are some nice restaurants nearby as well along the coast and in Waimea.
We spent the following week in a nice rental in Puako, but found ourselves longing for our mansion on a hill. Thank you.
We have spent many vacations in Hawaii and at Kohala Ranch; but our stay at this wonderful home was the best!! The pictures on the website don't even begin to show the beauty and luxury of the home. There was a small container garden on the property and we had fresh tomatoes, limes, and herbs daily. The owners were very helpful and great to work with and the property manager is the best in the area. We celebrated our 50th anniversary with our family and everyone wants to go back! The view of the ocean is incredible. We highly recommend this place!
This property is located in the Meadows section of the Ranch, and is generally 3 - 4 degrees cooler than the lower "Heathers" section - a welcome cooler weather which is warm enough to be tropical, but doesn't require A/C. Nice Large pool & hot tub. Lots of outdoor seating area. Our family was staying there with another family, and we never felt cramped - quite the opposite, we felt like we all had lots of privacy & personal space even with two families staying under one roof. Kitchen is well set-up, easy to cook for large groups. Large fridge/freezer, & great bar set-up. Beds were comfortable. The "wellness hall" was great with both a dry & steam sauna. The kids loved the game room, and spent their evenings there. The property owners & managers were very gracious to work with.
